Chapter 529: Chapter 529 Orchard Harvest (4)_1
Every scene and object in the Mo Family’s courtyard was crafted by Mo Yan’s hands. Upon hearing Yan Junyu’s praise, she felt happy inside, but responded with modesty, "They’re merely wild things from the mountains, hardly worthy of Young Master Yan’s compliments."
Yan Junyu’s fan-waving hand stiffened slightly, then he shook his head, his tone carrying an unconscious hint of expectation, "You girl, after knowing this lord for so long, when will you be able to show your true self in front of me with confidence?"
Mo Yan smiled subtly without a word and poured him a cup of chilled pear juice.
The person before her, born into a noble family with a distinguished status, had quite good friends and protectors in business. She didn’t want a deeper relationship than that; it was better to maintain some distance in their usual interactions.
Yan Junyu felt a slight pang of disappointment, sighed, shook his head, and then changed the subject to talk about fruit.
Mo Yan didn’t say much either and directly served three plates of fruit for Yan Junyu to taste on his own.
Seeing the fruit pieces neatly cut but with the skin unpeeled in the plate, Yan Junyu assumed Mo Yan had a habit of not peeling fruit. Nevertheless, he graciously picked up a juicy slice of pear and casually bit into it.
The moment the fruit flesh entered his mouth, Mo Yan clearly saw the surprise that flashed in Yan Junyu’s eyes before he proceeded to put the rest of the half-eaten piece, skin and all, into his mouth.
After the pear, Yan Junyu tasted the peaches and plums. Only then did he take out a handkerchief to clean his hands, his face revealing a shrewd smile, "These fruits are quite good; you’ve truly given this lord a surprise! Tell me, how much of each fruit do you have? I’ll take them all!"
He had thought that pears and peaches were commonplace, and no matter how good they tasted, they would be just that. But after just one bite, he knew he had been gravely mistaken! These three kinds of fruit were not inferior to the exotic delicacies offered by the Southern Barbarians.
Moreover, he felt that aside from their exceptional taste, the fruit had an indistinct and refreshing sweetness that left one feeling gratified after eating.
Upon hearing this, Mo Yan knew she could sell the batch of fruit at a good price. With that thought, her smile became a few degrees more genuine, "Since it’s the first time those fruit trees are bearing fruit, there isn’t much. All fruit combined, there’s just under two thousand catties. If Young Master Yan takes it all, it would be best to transport it back today. If left for a few more days, they’ll lose their moisture and the taste will be much less appealing."
Pears could last a little longer if stored in a cool place. Peaches, however, would spoil within a couple of days and were especially intolerant to jostling. If disturbed, they would be inedible the next day. Plums were similar, though not as prone to spoiling as peaches, they would lose flavor the longer they were kept.
Yan Junyu was well aware of this and promptly had Guan Yu take out a hundred taels of silver notes to give to Mo Yan. He also ordered the guards to move the fruit as quickly as possible and store it in the cellar.
With profits multiplied tenfold, Mo Yan was very satisfied. She then brought up another orchard, "The fruit trees Young Master Yan previously gifted are almost all bearing fruit now, and they look quite decent. If Young Master Yan brought enough people, they could be picked now and transported back to town together."
Upon hearing this, Yan Junyu’s eyes suddenly lit up, his interest piqued, "This lord would quite like to see what’s so special about your orchard that allows those difficult-to-grow fruit seedlings to flourish and bear fruit so soon."
Mo Yan readily agreed, fetched a bamboo basket, and led Yan Junyu to the orchard.
However, when an enthusiastic Yan Junyu followed Mo Yan into the orchard, what greeted him was not a variety of delicious fruits, but a splat of grey with a hint of white chicken droppings.
For someone like Yan Junyu, who valued style and had a slight obsession with cleanliness, he could tolerate stepping on dirt or even getting his clothes a bit dusty. Yet he absolutely could not stand being "tainted" by filth like excrement—it was nothing short of a disaster!
Even if the disaster was only on a part of his shoe that he couldn’t see, it was completely unacceptable.
So, before Mo Yan could even react, he swiftly removed the "hit" shoe and flung it beyond the thorns with lightning speed.
Mo Yan: ...
Young Master Yan, are you sure your one-legged stance fits with your lofty status?
