Chapter 509: Chapter 509: Starting Trouble with One Kick (3)_1
These silver corner pieces added up to just over three taels, but to Mo Hong’s family and others, it was already a significant amount. However, they were not satisfied, believing that there was still some silver undiscovered.
When Mo Wu and Mo Danier returned from setting up their stall, what met their eyes was the cluttered house, with bedding tossed about the floor, and the only piece of furniture—a roughly made wooden chest—upended and emptied on the ground.
Mo Wu said nothing and immediately rushed out of the house, heading straight for the ancient poplar trees at the center of the village. Mo Danier, worried that something might happen, quickly followed her.
At that moment, the sun was fierce and the weather hot. Most of the villagers were chatting and seeking shade under the ancient poplar trees, waiting for the heat to decrease before they would carry their hoes to the fields. The people of Lao Mo’s House were no exception; aside from a few children sleeping at home, all the adults were here.
When Mo Wu arrived beneath the ancient poplar trees, her face was streaked with tears. She rushed to where Mo Yongxi was eating preserved fruit and knelt down before her, her voice piercingly sharp as she cried out, "Sister-in-law, please, I beg you, return the silver to me. That’s my dowry silver, specially saved for Tie Tou’s future marriage. Tie Tou is already nineteen; we can’t delay any longer. Please have mercy, have pity on your nephew, and give me back the dowry silver!"
After speaking, Mo Wu’s forehead thudded heavily to the ground, her bowing head making a banging sound. In no time at all, her not-so-fair forehead turned dark purple.
From the moment Mo Wu rushed out and spoke to the moment she started to kowtow, it was only a brief instant. The villagers resting under the locust tree hadn’t had time to react. By the time they realized what was happening, Mo Wu’s forehead was already bleeding, blood beads rolling down and covering her face, presenting an exceptionally tragic sight.
There was first a hush around them and then, like a drop of water hitting boiling oil, buzzing conversations erupted all around.
"What’s the elder sister-in-law of the Mo family doing, kowtowing to her younger sister-in-law like that?"
"Where have you been keeping your ears? Didn’t you hear Mo Wu say her son’s marriage silver was taken by Mo Yongxi?"
"Tsk tsk tsk, it was bad enough when she was barbaric and ruthless, and harbored vicious thoughts, but it was none of our business since she couldn’t get married off. And now, she’s gone ahead and stolen her sister-in-law’s silver. We’d better be careful in the future; we don’t have that much property to be stolen!"
...
Amidst the various discussions, the villagers pointed fingers at the people from Lao Mo’s House, their faces visibly filled with contempt.
Mo Yongxi was initially dazed by Mo Wu’s actions, and when she heard those unbearable comments, it felt like her lungs would explode with fury, and she wished she could tear Mo Wu apart. However, after the incident where she previously tried to frame Mo Yan and ended up seriously injured herself, she had grown much wiser and was no longer as impulsive as before.
Suppressing the anger in her heart, Mo Yongxi forced a smile to conceal her already-distorted features, intending to step forward and help Mo Wu up, in an attempt to salvage her own reputation. Before she could act, however, Mrs. Hong charged over, pointing at Mo Wu and cursing loudly, "You vile creature! Eating and drinking at my house, yet you have the gall to ask me for silver, where do you get the nerve?"
Mo Wu seemed to be frightened and collapsed to the ground. She glanced at Mrs. Hong fearfully, bit her lip, and then lunged forward, suddenly grasping Mrs. Hong’s legs, and cried plaintively, "Mother, that’s my dowry silver, saved for Tie Tou’s engagement. If you want the silver, I will surely work hard to earn it and return it all to you in the future. Please give back the silver!"
Mrs. Hong was taken aback by the fierce embrace and lost her balance, falling onto her bottom. The pain made her lash out without thinking, kicking out and hitting Mo Wu in the stomach—a kick that turned out to have serious consequences!
"Ah——" Mo Wu was kicked away, falling on her back to the ground, letting out a piercing scream. She clutched her stomach, her complexion suddenly turning deathly pale, large beads of sweat rolling down her cheeks, making her look increasingly unwell.
"Ah——it hurts——my stomach hurts so much! Ah——" Mo Wu curled up, emitting a weak, agonized cry.
Mrs. Hong was stunned; her own bottom hurt terribly, and the kick she had given was without much force—how could it have rendered Mo Wu unable to get up?
Watching from the side, Mo Yongxi frowned at Mo Wu, who continued to clutch her stomach and scream incessantly. She had clearly seen the kick just now; it wasn’t possible for it to have caused injury. Mo Wu must be pretending, seeking to use this incident to get her silver back.
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became. With a cold snort, she crouched down beside Mrs. Hong and whispered her suspicions into her ear...
