Chapter 433: Chapter 433 New Year’s New Plan (2)_1
With fresh, delicious grape wine enhancing the spirits and a table full of sumptuous delicacies, the family felt exceptionally satisfied with this New Year’s Eve dinner. Even the three beasts were more excited than usual, circling around the table nonstop, and they didn’t reject the food thrown to them by anyone other than Mo Yan.
The New Year’s Eve dinner continued until six quarter hours past the dog hour before everyone took a break, feeling somewhat overstuffed. They rubbed their round bellies and walked several circles in the courtyard until they felt more comfortable, then returned to the cabin. They settled down beside the warm, glowing brazier to keep vigil, awaiting the arrival of the New Year.
With too many people for a single brazier, they lit two. Lixiu sat with a few of the younger ones, her face brimming with gentle smiles as she listened to their innocent chattering. Having experienced such misfortune and hardships, she found these simple and ordinary days were the happiest and most worth cherishing.
Tang Xin leisurely shelled melon seeds, her heart filled with indescribable satisfaction. The days at the Mo Family were almost beyond her wildest dreams. Though she was bought by the Mo Family and had entered into servitude, she didn’t feel like she was less than anyone else. With enough to eat and warm clothes to wear, doing some simple housework was enough; she didn’t even have to worry about being beaten with a cane, which was a day and night difference compared to her life with the Tang Family!
On a small table nearby, there were various snacks, and the family chatted while snacking in a harmonious and joyful atmosphere. Even the Yun Zhao siblings, who had been forced to leave their home, felt the full warmth and happiness of the moment.
After warming herself at the fire for a while, Mo Yan suddenly remembered that she hadn’t prepared anything for the livestock to eat. She rose and went to the kitchen, scooped up nearly half a basin of cooked rice from a pottery bowl, added a small spoonful of salt, and dumped all the unused greens, chopped fine, into it. After adding hot water and mixing it, she carried the wooden bucket to the livestock room in the backyard.
Little Black and Da HongZao were still chewing on the dry grass, while Da Huang, Little Yellow, and Maomao had snuggled up close together to sleep. Hearing the familiar footsteps in the courtyard, they all stood up at once, ears perked up.
As the door opened and they caught the scent of the rice mixed with the greens, they became excited and couldn’t wait to approach their owner. Fortunately, these big fellows were quite intelligent; they didn’t recklessly rush over to snatch the food, but instead waited by their troughs to be fed.
Mo Yan placed the wind-proof lantern on the windowsill and smiled as she patted their heads, then poured the food into their troughs. She also took out a large pile of various fresh vegetables from the Space, enough for them to have a feast.
The five large animals affectionately nudged their owner’s hand, then buried their heads and started eating heartily, filling the room with the sound of their chewing.
Looking at the horses and cattle with glossy fur and sturdy limbs, Mo Yan felt a deep sense of pride. There was no need to mention the two big Da Huangs; they were already healthy when purchased, and now they were even more robust and strong. The small calf had changed even more, not much smaller than an adult cow now, and would be definitely useful for next spring’s plowing.
The biggest changes were with Little Black and Da HongZao, however. Little Black had completely thrown off its previous weakness and small stature, becoming tall, mighty, and particularly beautiful, while Da HongZao had shed its old age and the scars covering it, bursting with new vitality. Now, if you took them to a horse market, even the market workers wouldn’t recognize them. When driving the horse cart to the city beforehand, there were several horse lovers who offered high prices to buy these two animals, and they were quite regretful after being refused.
Once they had nearly finished eating, Mo Yan added some dry straw to their sleeping quarters, then took the wind-proof lantern and the wooden bucket and went out. After a few steps, a gust of cold wind hit her, and suddenly something heavy landed on her shoulder, accompanied by Maomao’s haughty chirping in her ear.
Since the last time it failed to bring back a reply, Maomao had disappeared; Mo Yan knew where it had gone and wasn’t worried about its safety. She thought it unlikely she would ever see this haughty and gluttonous creature again, but to her surprise, it had come back!
Looking at the outstretched paw in front of her, Mo Yan was somewhat bewildered, as if she couldn’t believe she would receive another letter from him! With his status, his personality, having refused his letter, shouldn’t he be angry? Shouldn’t he take her actions as acquiescence, severing whatever ties should never have existed between them...
At that moment, Mo Yan’s mind was as if clogged with paste, unable to sort out her thoughts calmly! The paw in front of her remained outstretched and she forced herself not to look, but her hand reached out regardless.
As her pale fingers touched the letter, as if awakened by its cold temperature, she quickly withdrew her hand. She brushed off Maomao, who was perched on her shoulder, and without even thinking to take the bucket, she fled back into the cabin, slamming the door shut. She left the bone-chilling wind and the following Maomao locked outside.
Leaning against the door, Mo Yan closed her eyes and covered her wildly pounding chest, taking deep breaths of cold air until her mind slowly cleared up a bit.
"Yanyan, what’s wrong with you? Are you feeling unwell?" Just then, a worried voice suddenly sounded, startling Mo Yan into opening her eyes wide. Sensing something off about her, Mo Qingze quickly approached.
Mo Qingze had heard the door sound but saw no one come in for a long time. Worried that something had happened, he had come out to check and found his daughter weakly leaning against the door, her expression very odd.
Seeing her father, Mo Yan forced a smile and shook her head, "Dad, I’m fine. When I came in, a rat ran over my foot and scared me."
On hearing this, Mo Qingze, seeing that she indeed seemed scared, didn’t question further. He then said, "So rats have already run into our house, those creatures are too harmful. After the New Year, we must catch a cat to keep, we can’t let those pests damage our things."
"Mhm mhm, whatever dad says we’ll do. It’s too cold here, let’s go back in and get warm by the fire," Mo Yan hurriedly nodded, worrying about being found out, and urged while hugging her father’s arm.
Looking at the pair of hands holding his arm, Mo Qingze was a bit surprised, his gaze towards Mo Yan especially tender and caring. The child had changed a lot since leaving Mo Family Village, not only becoming open-hearted but also much more affectionate towards her father.
Thinking of this, he felt very reassured and increasingly believed that settling here without returning to Liu Yang Village was the right decision!
