Chapter 238: Chapter 238 Mo Hong’s Family Sells Daughter and Gains an Uncle (6)_1
The next day, Mo Yan and her daughter took a carriage to Changshan Academy.
Located to the east of the city, Changshan Academy was situated on the outskirts of Jing City. Originally, this area was not prosperous, and could even be described as poor. However, since Changshan Academy had been established here, the local residents seized the opportunity to open restaurants, tea houses, bookshops, and other small establishments catering to the students, eventually forming a bustling commercial street.
Usually after school, the street was bustling with students from the Academy.
Now, as classes were in session at the Academy, the street was quiet. The trio didn’t search long before they found a landlord who specialized in renting out houses.
Indeed, the nearby houses were in high demand and only three were left.
One was a large suite with three bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. It had good lighting and ventilation, and the interior was nicely decorated.
The other two were smaller, each with one bedroom and a kitchen. The rooms were quite spacious, and though the furnishings- which included a bed, desk, and bookcase - were used, they were still 80% new. They would be fine for a single person.
The rent for the larger house was high, demanding ten taels of silver per month, which was not affordable for ordinary students. The two smaller ones were three taels of silver a month, and one of them, which had poor lighting, could be had for half a tael less.
Mo Yan actually wanted to rent the larger house, but Mo Qingze did not agree and refused to consider it, leaving her with no choice but to rent the well-lit smaller one and to pay the rent for a full year upfront.
Having secured the rental receipt, the three of them then bought a set of pots, woks, and other kitchenware in the street. As for bedding and such, they had plenty at home and there was no need to buy the expensive and average-quality ones available on the street.
Mo Yan rolled up her sleeves and cleaned the house inside and out. Looking at the sparkling clean room, she felt an odd sense of satisfaction well up inside her.
Once everything in the house was in order, and they were just waiting to move things in, it was already noon. It was too late to go home for a meal, so the trio chose a small restaurant and ordered four or five dishes to satisfy their hunger.
There were several such small eateries in the vicinity. Mo Yan didn’t know how the others tasted, but this one was just average. She felt thankful that her father could cook; otherwise, eating out all the time would be no different from dining in a large cafeteria.
After eating, the three took the carriage back.
Mo Qingze packed up his personal belongings, the books he would need, and bedding among other things, and had them all loaded onto the carriage for Lizhong to deliver to their rented house.
On the third day, Lizhong brought Lixiu’s nephew to Mo Yan and her father, insisting on going to the Government Office to deal with the matter of the servitude contract.
"We’ve been so busy before that this matter has been dragging on. Now it’s time to take care of it. Otherwise, the old man won’t be at ease, haha!" Lizhong said, stroking his beard and laughing heartily, with no reluctance at all showing on his face.
"Uncle Zhong, you all have a legitimate reason to stay here, there’s truly no need to sell yourselves!" Mo Qingze tried to persuade him further.
"Yes, Grandfather Li, whether or not you sell yourselves to my family, you are still helping us. There’s no difference whether you do or don’t!" Mo Yan added her own persuasion.
They had thought that after such a long delay, the Li Family’s resolve to sell themselves might waver, but Grandfather Li was just as firm as ever.
Lizhong, still smiling, said: "We have already agreed on this previously, and we are all willing. You father and daughter should not try to persuade us further. Besides, the people in the village don’t know about this, so it’s not causing us any trouble. Let’s just proceed as we initially agreed."
Lixiu’s nephew also made clear her strong desire on the side, saying that if the Mo Family didn’t buy them out, they would have no face to continue staying with the Mo Family.
With all three members of the Li Family being so insistent, Mo Yan and her father, after talking until they were blue in the face, could not persuade them otherwise and had no choice but to agree.
