Chapter 1270: Chapter 398: The Light of Merit, Box_2
The Six Beasts had eaten their fill before setting off, so they were not hungry yet and found chewing on some dried meat to be quite pleasant during their idle moments. There were many small animals fleeing in the surrounding forest, but as the area fell within Bao Hua Temple’s domain, some level of restraint was due, and even if starving, they would not kill any living creature here.
An hour later, everyone had recovered, including Cui Qingrou, who had regained much of her strength. After gathering their belongings, they continued their journey towards Bao Hua Temple.
However, as they progressed, the mountains became steeper and the climb more strenuous. They rested three times along the way, only reaching Bao Hua Temple near the end of the evening.
Bao Hua Temple, renowned as an ancient monastery of a thousand years, was not lavishly decorated, but it exuded a sense of solidity and inclusiveness. Standing before the temple gate, listening to the sounds of the wooden fish and the soft chanting coming from within, one felt as if their soul had been cleansed, becoming incredibly light.
The temple gate was open, and initially, there was no one at the entrance, but just as the Mo Family was about to enter, a monk clad in a kasaya with white hair and a friendly face came out to meet them. It was none other than Liaokong, the Abbot of Bao Hua Temple.
With a calm demeanor, Liaokong glanced at the Mo Family group, his gaze pausing on Mo Yan for a moment before he greeted with one hand, "Honored guests, this poor monk has failed to welcome you from afar, Amitabha."
It was this very look that confirmed Mo Yan’s earlier speculation that the Abbot Liaokong was indeed no ordinary man, and there might be more to come.
The others were taken by surprise, never expecting that their visit to Bao Hua Temple would disturb the rarely seen Abbot, causing him to personally come out to greet them. They quickly joined their palms and returned the gesture.
The entrance was not the place for discussion, and although their minds brimmed with countless questions due to Abbot Liaokong, they could only follow him across the threshold and into Bao Hua Temple.
As the sounds of chanting filled the air, the restlessness the Mo Family felt due to Abbot Liaokong gradually subsided.
"Wow, Yanyan, this place is so comfortable, I really like it here. You should have brought me here earlier," Xuetuan expressed joyously as it tumbled through Space, not hiding its pleasure.
"What’s going on?" Mo Yan asked curiously, truly not understanding what it was about this place that excited Xuetuan so much.
"This temple has a history of a thousand years and has accumulated a great amount of Power of Faith. Although this Power of Faith is not merit, which cannot enable Space to upgrade, it can make my Divine Soul more condensed, and when I Transform, it can reduce some of my suffering," Xuetuan replied without hiding the reason.
Being a product of the Cultivation World, it was legally protected there. During its Transform, it would at most be struck by thunder a few times, which was not meant to destroy it, but rather a gift from the Heavenly Dao. But this place was not the Cultivation World and could not accommodate such an anomaly. The thunder that would strike during its Transform aimed to annihilate its existence.
Although accumulating enough merit could resist the wrath of the Heavenly Dao’s Thunder Fury, it would not avoid physical pain. However, possessing this Power of Faith would make it much better.
Despite the appeal of the Power of Faith, Xuetuan never considered taking refuge here during its Transform because the destructive thunder would not be discerning and might destroy the ancient monastery along with it, which would be a significant loss of merit. Born from merit, it naturally could not commit such an act, or it would eventually have to repay doubly.
This was the first time Mo Yan had heard of this from Xuetuan and after thinking for a moment, she said, "Then from now on we’ll often come here so you can absorb more Power of Faith."
Xuetuan did not refuse the suggestion and shared something Mo Yan was unaware of, "Actually, you also have the Power of Faith!"
"I do?" Mo Yan was surprised; she believed in having the power of merit but had not felt the Power of Faith herself.
Xuetuan explained, "Over the years, you’ve helped many people. Their gratitude and admiration for you are also a form of the Power of Faith. However, since the gratitude and admiration of people can be fleeting, your Power of Faith is not very stable. Compared to this thousand-year-old ancient monastery, it’s like comparing a small stream to a vast ocean."
Ah, what a terrible comparison. It’s so disheartening! Mo Yan thought to herself, completely oblivious to the fact that her focus was misaligned.
Xuetuan remained silent, deeply feeling that discussing this with its master had been a mistake.
Mo Yan’s mind, however, was clear as she said to Xuetuan, "The Power of Faith cannot be forced, and gathering it is even harder than accumulating merit! What we need to do now is to continue performing good deeds. If you want the Power of Faith to condense your Divine Soul, we’ll just come here more often." It was much simpler and more convenient than accumulating it through her own hard work.
