Chapter 125: Chapter 125 Falling (2)_1

"Everyone on the stage, the execution is about to take place, leave quickly!" At this moment, as the time approached the third quarter past noon, a police officer rushed over to urge the woman to leave.

The woman was crying inconsolably, tightly embracing Fat Brother and refusing to leave. Finally, the officer lost patience and physically pulled her away.

"Xing Er, go back. I don’t want you to see my mutilated body after death, it’s not a pretty sight, and it will scare you," Fat Brother managed a smile and gently persuaded her to leave. When she was about to be forcefully taken away by the officer, he couldn’t hold back anymore and asked, "If there is a next life, Xing Er, would you follow me then?"

She suddenly turned her head, her eyes shattered with tears, and disregarding the stares of those around her, she shouted out loud, "Willing, I am willing! Brother, if there is a next life, you must find me earlier!"

Having said that, unable to bear witnessing the man beheaded, she covered her mouth, sobbing as she pushed through the crowd and dashed out without looking back.

Watching her retreating figure as the Execution Official announced, "Noon has arrived, carry out the execution," Fat Brother’s joyful smile instantly froze on his face.

And at the moment the woman in green turned her head, Mo Yan finally remembered where that familiar feeling came from. She hastily excused herself to Liu Tinglan and, ignoring her shouts, quickly squeezed through the crowd and chased after the woman.

The woman’s pace was fast, and there was some distance between them. Mo Yan had a hard time catching up, and with the streets crowded with passersby, she saw the woman about to disappear into the crowd. In her desperation, she yelled out loud, "Lixiu!"

The woman seemed not to have heard, and Mo Yan shouted her name a few more times. On the fourth shout, she clearly saw the woman hesitate in her steps and glance back.

Mo Yan felt a burst of joy in her heart and hurriedly caught up to her, stopping her in a small alley.

Her eyes red and swollen with tears, the woman looked warily at Mo Yan when she was stopped and asked, "What do you want?"

Patting her chest, Mo Yan asked breathlessly, "May I ask if your name might be Lixiu?"

Panic flashed through the woman’s eyes as she glanced away and said coldly, "You’ve mistaken me for someone else, I am not Lixiu!" With that, she turned to leave.

Seeing the panic in her eyes, how could Mo Yan believe her? But if she truly was Lixiu—Grandfather Li’s daughter—why would she deny it? And if she wasn’t, why react this way, could it all be a coincidence?

Looking at the woman’s features, which bore a strong resemblance to Liyan, Mo Yan shook her head. Grandfather Li had said that Lixiu and Liyan looked very similar, and now the age and appearance both matched; there couldn’t be so many coincidences.

But the woman refused to admit her identity, and Mo Yan had no evidence at hand. Moreover, her refusal to admit she was Lixiu must have been due to some unspoken hardships—if Mo Yan persisted, it might backfire and scare her away.

With this thought, Mo Yan smiled and said somewhat sheepishly, "My apologies, miss. It’s just that your silhouette resembles someone I know, and I mistook you for a moment. I’m very sorry!"

With that, she stepped back to indicate that the woman could go.

The woman looked at Mo Yan with suspicion but, seeing the impeccable faint smile on her face, took it as the truth and hurried off after a brief ’it’s alright.’

Taking advantage of the fact that the woman wasn’t paying attention, Mo Yan quietly followed her. To avoid being discovered, she didn’t dare to follow too closely, keeping a moderate distance.

The area was full of winding alleys, with houses mostly made of earthen bricks, low and dilapidated. Some walls were cracked, and the ground was riddled with filthy wastewater, emanating an unpleasant odor.

After following through several narrow alleys, Mo Yan noticed that the surrounding houses were much better, although still very old, but mostly made of green bricks and tiles. She saw the woman knock on the door of a rather large house.

Soon, the door opened, and a short, sleazy-looking man appeared. Whatever the man said must have been offensive, as the woman suddenly raised her hand and slapped him hard, then turned and entered the house without looking back.

The man covered his face, looked in the direction of the woman, spat on the ground, and cursed violently before slamming the door shut with a bang.

Watching this scene, Mo Yan had a bad feeling. After pondering for a moment, she stopped a passing old woman and pointed to the house, asking, "Granny, do you know who the owner of that grand family residence is? That house is really big!"

The elderly woman glanced in the direction she was pointing and her face changed dramatically, kindly advising, "Girl, that’s not a good place, not somewhere a young lady should go. You should hurry on home and not come here again, understand?"

With that, she urged Mo Yan to leave quickly.

Upon hearing this, Mo Yan felt even more uneasy. She thanked the old woman and hurried off with a mind full of worries.

At the edge of the vegetable market, Liu Tinglan was anxiously waiting. Seeing Mo Yan return, she quickly went up to her and slapped her back, "Yanyan, where did you run off to? I’ve been waiting for you for so long; you had me worried sick."

Mo Yan was touched and guiltily said, "I’m sorry, Miss Liu. I saw someone who looked a lot like an old acquaintance of mine, and I followed her. I ran too far and only just got back now."

Liu Tinglan was only worried about her friend’s safety and wasn’t really angry. Hearing this, she asked with concern, "Did you catch up? Was it your acquaintance?"

Mo Yan couldn’t tell her directly, so she lied to brush it off.

Liu Tinglan didn’t press further; she just warned her not to do so again to avoid encountering bad people, and Mo Yan readily agreed.

They took a carriage out of the vegetable market, and Liu Tinglan suggested taking a stroll in the Eastern Market. But with her mind preoccupied, Mo Yan wasn’t in the mood and declined.

Seeing that Mo Yan looked unwell, Liu Tinglan didn’t insist. After dropping her off at home and declining Mo Yan’s invitation to stay for dinner, she took the carriage back to her own place.

Mo Yan locked herself in her room, blankly pondering for a long time without making up her mind whether to inform Grandfather Li and the others about the incident. If that woman was indeed Lixiu, now fallen to a secret brothel, how heartbroken would Grandfather Li be upon finding out.

But if she didn’t tell them, would she just continue to watch old Grandfather Li run around searching for his daughter? Yet if it turned out not to be Lixiu, wouldn’t it be a false joy for Grandfather Li? Although she was 80% certain that the woman was Lixiu!
