Chapter 1057: Chapter 340: Influence, Rumors_2
Having left the brothel, Mo Yonglu sought to borrow loan with interest from anyone he could find. But, being a transient without a fixed residence or a house to his name, and lacking anything of value for collateral, not a soul was willing to lend him money. After more than a month of futile attempts, not only had he failed to secure even one wen of money, his entire family had nearly starved to death on the streets.
When Mo Erni once again knelt on the ground, clinging desperately to Mo Yonglu’s legs and sobbing for help, driven to despair, Mo Yonglu finally decided to return and ask Mo Yan for assistance. Though he knew the chances of Mo Yan helping were slim, he had no other options.
As Mo Yonglu pleaded tearfully, not a single ripple stirred in Mo Yan’s heart. If there was any movement, it was merely touched by his fatherly affection. Had it been anyone else, she would have certainly offered help, but Mo Erni... this person who had repeatedly harmed their family and bore resentment against them, she could not muster a shred of sympathy.
What if her compassion were to save a poisonous snake that might turn and bite back when the time comes?
In the hopeful gaze of Mo Yonglu, Mo Yan coldly refused, "Mo Yonglu, go back. I can’t do this for you."
Mo Yonglu’s face turned ashen, but he was unwilling to give up so easily, "Yan girl, I know, I know we were wrong in the past, we did many things to wrong your family when we were drunk. I don’t ask for your forgiveness, I only hope that you can help me this once, just this once. In return, I, Mo Yonglu, will work like an ox or a horse to repay your great kindness and grace."
Mo Yan shook her head, her expression utterly indifferent, "I did not pursue Mo Erni’s past actions, that was already in consideration of our shared ancestry. Now that she has fallen to such a state, it’s clear that God is punishing her. I will not oppose God for her sake. Go back. I don’t need anyone to work for me like an ox or a horse."
"Yan girl..." Mo Yonglu’s face showed sheer despair as he thudded his forehead against the ground repeatedly, apologizing as he did so: "Yan girl, it’s my fault for not teaching Erni properly, leading her to commit those wrongs. It’s all my fault as an adult, and I apologize on behalf of Erni to your family. Please help her, save her, I beg you, I kowtow to you... "
"Bang, bang, bang!"
The sound of his forehead hitting the ground resonated in the spacious hall, devoid of any pretense. In no time, Mo Yonglu’s forehead was bruised and purple, with streaks of fresh blood beginning to seep through.
Mo Yan turned her head away, refusing to watch, and said to Mao Tuan and Little Flower who had come to see what the commotion was about, "You two, take him out. If he refuses to leave, don’t be soft-hearted."
With that, she didn’t look at Mo Yonglu again and turned to walk toward the back courtyard, leaving his desperate pleas trailing behind her.
"Sister, you seem troubled. Are you having regrets?"
In the backyard, Xin Er looked at her sister’s grim expression and asked worriedly. She knew her sister was kind-hearted and feared that her sister might be regretting not being able to help.
Mo Yan snapped out of it and chuckled, "Why should I feel guilty? Mo Erni has done so many terrible things to our family. Her current plight is entirely her own doing. What do I have to regret?"
Xin Er breathed a sigh of relief but was puzzled, "Then why do you look so upset? You had me worried that you regretted it and might run off to save her!"
The smile faded from Mo Yan’s face as she exhaled softly, "I was just thinking; Mo Yonglu and Mo Erni, as father and daughter, both did us wrong. One repented and became a responsible person who would no longer do evil, while the other fell deeper and eventually ruined herself... I don’t regret refusing to help. I just feel a bit of pity for Mo Yonglu."
If only Mo Erni had realized her mistakes after being sold and had decided to turn over a new leaf, Mo Yan might not have ignored Mo Yonglu’s request so coldly. However, during the incident at the Cloth Shop, she clearly sensed Mo Erni’s deep resentment toward her and her family. It was evident that this person was beyond redemption and not worth saving.
A parent’s love is indeed pitiable; while she had no fondness for anyone from Lao Mo’s House, from the standpoint of an outsider, she did feel some pity for Mo Yonglu. If he had been willing to give up on saving Mo Erni and had focused on properly raising his sons to keep them from straying, his life wouldn’t have had to be so difficult. But now, it seemed impossible.
