Chapter 101: Chapter 101 Kidnapped (2)_1
Mo Qingze chuckled and nodded, "That’s right, can you think of what idiom it might be?"
Seeing this, Mo Yan didn’t give away her own answer, smilingly watched Zhen Er, wanting to see if he could guess it.
The plump shop owner also breathed a sigh of relief. The lantern was expensive, and another correct guess would mean a loss for him. However, now the challenge was handed to a mere five- or six-year-old child...
To his dismay, before he could feel relieved, Zhen Er excitedly called out the answer: "Zhen Er knows, it’s ’Having no one in charge’!"
The shop owner sullenly took down the lantern, glaring at the gleefully grinning Zhen Er. Were even little brats this clever now?
Receiving the Yellow Tiger Lantern, Zhen Er held it as if it were a precious treasure, carefully carrying it, afraid it might get bumped and damaged by others.
Noticing that the shop owner had lost his enthusiasm, Mo Yan also dropped the idea of continuing to guess lantern riddles, and the group moved on.
Seeing an open space not far away surrounded by people, with the occasional exclamation overheard, Zhen Er pulled Mo Yan’s hand, eager to rush over and join the excitement.
Since this outing was meant for fun, Mo Yan went along with Zhen Er’s desire, following him while tightly gripping his left hand with her right to prevent getting separated by the crowd.
Xin Er and Li Yan also wanted to join and see, so Mo Qingze and Li Zhong each took one by the hand and went over.
In the center of the crowd, a group was performing acrobatics.
"Wow, big sister, that person is actually blowing fire from his mouth! Doesn’t he get burned? Yikes, that child is so young, yet he dares to walk barefoot on a bed of nails. Won’t that hurt a lot?"
Taking advantage of his small size, Zhen Er squirmed his way to the front, marveling at the thrilling performances of the adults and children, and couldn’t stop exclaiming in surprise.
When a young girl came over with a tray to collect money, Mo Yan took out a handful of Copper Coins and placed them in the tray, around thirty in total—not too few but not enough to draw attention.
The girl, seeing Mo Yan give so much at once, had sparks of joy flicker in her otherwise dull eyes. Her shiny black eyes fixed on Mo Yan, she repeated "thank you" several times.
Mo Yan returned the smile, silently sighing in her heart.
Scholars, farmers, workers, and merchants, people of all sorts. These acrobats belonged to the lowest social status; without extremely dangerous and special skills, it was hard for them to rise and earn Big Money.
Given the nature of these acrobatics, it was apparent they were just an ordinary group, performing on the streets for a living, powerless against those who watched but didn’t want to pay. On festival days like this, when people came out in search of fun and were more generous than usual, these performers could earn a bit more than on regular days.
Yet there were many even more pitiable than them. Had she not been transported into the original owner’s body, Xin Er and Zhen Er might have suffered at the hands of a group of refugees. If they had lost their children, how could Mo Qingze, as their father, have coped with living on?
After watching for a while, the group found it dull and squeezed out of the crowd, planning to visit other places.
Compared to earlier, the street was now much more crowded. Where walking had been relatively easy before, they now had to shuffle along, heel to toe with the flow of people. This reminded Mo Yan of the "human ribbon" formed by the dense crowds on the Great Wall during the National Golden Week in her previous life.
If someone were to look down from a high place at the moment, they would see her and her companions as part of the "human ribbon." What Mo Yan didn’t know was that someone was indeed watching this sea of people from high above.
To avoid being separated by the crowd, the group held hands, with Mo Qingze leading the way.
But the accident struck too suddenly. First, a row of lantern stands was knocked over, sending a burst of flames onto a passerby, igniting them instantly. Then one after another, lantern stands were toppled in the chaos, sending more flames up, setting lanterns, wooden frames, and clothes ablaze. In moments, heartbreaking cries for help and wails of terror filled the air, throwing the entire street into disarray.
People were being knocked down and trampled on continuously...
Though they held hands tightly, the group was still scattered by the frantic crowd. Mo Yan’s left hand could no longer grasp Xin Er’s right, and although her right still firmly held Zhen Er’s left, as soon as a perfumed handkerchief covered her mouth and nose, she couldn’t even hold on to Zhen Er’s hand...
