Chapter 1003: Chapter 1003: Love’s Difficult Persistence (4)
Wu’s blanked for a moment; then she quickly understood Mo Yan had something to tell her and hurriedly followed.
When they reached the entrance of Wu Family’s courtyard, Mo Yan stopped walking. Under Wu’s concerned gaze, Mo Yan relayed the whole scene Big Sister Dani had witnessed just earlier.
After listening, Wu’s eyes filled with tears of heartache, "I was wondering why she looked so red-eyed when she ran back. When asked, she only said an insect flew into her eyes! This child, always keeping things to herself, how can one not worry?"
Mo Yan understood Wu’s feelings, unsure how to console her. She could only remind, "Big Sister Dani is suffering a lot right now, preferring to hide underneath the covers to weep rather than let us know. Aunt Wu, please pretend you don’t know as well. Such matters can only be understood by Big Sister Dani herself. It’s just that, in the next few days, have San Ni and her siblings keep an eye on her, lest Big Sister Dani become overly fixated on her troubles."
Wu originally planned to comfort Big Sister Dani after Mo Yan left, but hearing her speak so sensibly, she nodded and replied, "I’ll take note of this, thank you, Yan girl."
Mo Yan shook her head silently, feeling a touch of guilt towards Big Sister Dani. Although exposing her to those harsh words was well-intentioned, it had, after all, hurt her.
Wu, unaware of Mo Yan’s internal struggle and distressed about her daughter, couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief deep down. She understood her own daughter; through this incident, the girl would come to recognize her own position and gradually let go of her obsession. The pain of the moment was better than deluding herself and missing out on a lifetime of happiness.
Curled up on the bed in the room, Big Sister Dani was huddled into a ball. Burying her head deep into the covers, the muffled sound of her suppressed sobs still leaked out, as if only a good cry could help her vent some of her pain.
The scene at Mo Family’s, like a torrential blaze, had extinguished the last thread of hope in Big Sister Dani’s heart. The appearance of the Chang’an County Master finally made her realize the chasm between herself and Yan Junyu, and understand that Yan Junyu would ultimately marry a noble young lady. Even if she pleaded desperately, he wouldn’t glance at her a second time.
The warning glance from the Commandery Princess at the end chilled Big Sister Dani to the core. That indifferent gaze, as if she were no more than a speck of dust, made her realize that she was less than nothing in the eyes of this exalted highness.
Big Sister Dani acutely recognized her insignificance and lowliness in the eyes of those in power. If she hadn’t controlled herself then, rushing to express her feelings to Yan Junyu, the Chang’an County Master would not have spared her and might even have brought trouble upon her family.
Now, even though her heart still couldn’t let go of Yan Junyu, she had thoroughly given up on him. She wouldn’t look his way again, nor think about him. In time, she would surely forget him. She couldn’t, because of one man, push her own family toward doom...
Having sent Mo Yan off, Wu returned, the faint sound of sobbing from the room slicing through her heart like a knife. She wiped the tears from her face, knocked on the door, and tried to sound normal, "Big Sister Dani, Yan girl came to call you for dinner just now. Seeing that you weren’t well, I declined for you. If you’re feeling a bit better, get up and cook supper; I don’t have the time to do it."
Big Sister Dani, unaware that her mother knew everything, took a while longer to compose herself before lifting her head from under the covers. She intended to speak in a cheerful tone, but her voice was hoarse, "Mother, I’ll come make dinner. Please go about your business!"
Hearing a response, Wu breathed a sigh of relief and pretended to be puzzled, "Why is your voice hoarse, girl? Are you sick? Open the door and let your mother have a look."
Big Sister Dani replied in a fluster, "No, no need, Mother. I’m fine; just caught a cold from picking fruit and got my nose blocked. I’ll just boil some ginger water to drink while cooking."
Wu, hearing this, didn’t insist further but only said, "If you’re not feeling well, just keep lying down. I’ll call San Ni to cook. The girl has grown up; it’s time for her to start practicing her culinary skills."
Big Sister Dani quickly countered, "It’s alright, Mother. I can cook, just have San Ni assist me."
"Alright, then I’ll call San Ni back in, and you get up as well," Wu agreed from outside, before her footsteps echoed away.
Only when the footsteps had completely faded did Big Sister Dani crawl out of bed. Looking at her swollen red eyes in the copper mirror and worried her family would notice something, she hurriedly soaked a washcloth in cold water and pressed it to her face. Only after her eyes looked less swollen did she change into an old dress and open the room door to go to the kitchen...
When Mo Yan returned home, the coachmen had already left with carts of fruit. The Chang’an County Master was sitting in the main hall, laughing and talking with Xin Er.
Not seeing Young Master Yan, Mo Yan asked Xin Er, "Where’s Young Master Yan? Has he gone back to the capital?"
Xin Er was about to shake her head to indicate she didn’t know when the Chang’an County Master interjected, "After you left, this county master had a huge quarrel with him. Unable to win the argument, he ran off; by now, he’s probably hiding in some corner crying!"
Upon hearing this, an absurd image materialized in Mo Yan’s mind: The strikingly handsome Yan Junyu, hiding in a corner with a handkerchief to his face, weeping in despair. Then, in the next instant, the Chang’an County Master would appear in the scene, comforting the sobbing Junyu in her arms and maybe even initiating a dramatic wall pin!
Alas, such a beautiful image, Mo Yan couldn’t bear to continue the thought and hurriedly pulled herself from her imagination.
Just as she was about to go out and look, Mo Yan turned around to see Yan Junyu appear in the courtyard heading towards the main hall, his expression sour, especially after laying eyes on the Chang’an County Master—his face turned even darker...
