Fangless: The Alpha's Vampire Mate
Chapter 94: A Double-Edged Sword

Chapter 94: A Double-Edged Sword

Everything spiraled out of control faster than Valentin could blink. The moment he heard Riona was in danger, he shot to his feet and stormed to the chamber without letting time pass to process the information.

Elder Alera, refusing to be left behind, followed close on his heels, while Lord Marius kept a respectful distance, giving them space but staying within earshot.

"What do you mean she’s the Blood Moon child?" Valentin demanded. His voice betrayed his anxiety.

It was the first time he’d let his emotions get the better of him since he lost his temper with Riona the other day.

"Shouldn’t you know? You’re her uncle. Don’t you know her birthday?" Elder Alera snapped, barely able to conceal her impatience.

It was so uncharacteristic of her as an elder, who was supposed to be wise and calm at all times. But this matter was urgent, and she didn’t have the energy to feign patience.

Valentin was at a loss for words. There was no good answer. How could he possibly know, given that Amara had never even informed him of her pregnancy or Riona’s birth?

It hurt his pride to admit he had been left out by his own sister, so he kept quiet about it.

"Thousands of children were born during the Blood Moon. It doesn’t automatically make them the Blood Moon children," Valentin replied, finally having a good comeback.

Elder Alera rolled her eyes, trying to remain calm as she said, "She is a hybrid of vampire and werewolf. That makes her the perfect candidate for being a Blood Moon child."

There were no strict rules or specific criteria to be a Blood Moon child other than having to be born on the night of the Blood Moon.

As Valentin had pointed out, thousands of children were born that night. It was nearly impossible to identify the true Blood Moon child with certainty.

There were signs and omens, but one could never be sure until the Blood Moon child received enlightenment and unlocked the power of the Moon.

When the Blood Moon child opened the door to the power of the Moon and got connected with the Moon, elders who have spoken with ancestors would be able to feel it.

This was the first time Elder Alera had felt it herself, and she hadn’t been prepared for the overwhelming sensation.

As soon as the guards spotted the vampire king coming their way, they swiftly bowed, stepping aside to allow him to storm into Riona’s chamber without delay.

Valentin’s eyes widened at the sight of Riona sprawled unconscious on the floor. The atmosphere in the room felt charged, almost askew. Elder Alera’s gaze swept around, sensing the lingering warmth in the air.

"An ancestor was here recently," she deduced, almost saying it to herself. "Her enlightenment must have summoned an ancestor to give her guidance."

Valentin’s brow furrowed deeply. Trying to hide his worry for his niece, he forced his expression into a neutral mask as he quickly lifted Riona and laid her on the bed.

"Summon the palace physician immediately!" Valentin’s command rang out in his commanding baritone.

As they waited for the palace physician to arrive, Elder Alera inspected Riona’s body closely. Her whole body was cold to the touch, but she wasn’t shivering.

It was proof that the light power of the Moon had just entered her.

"She hasn’t gained control over the power yet," Elder Alera muttered, continuing to study Riona to get the whole picture of what had happened.

She added, "The power of the Moon is too potent for her fragile form."

While Elder Alera focused intently on the manifestation of the Moon’s power within Riona, Valentin’s mind dwelled on something else. "Why now? What could have triggered this enlightenment?"

Elder Alera exhaled slowly and shook her head. "I’m not sure. The power of the Moon is an eternal mystery, far beyond our understanding."

"You mentioned she’s in danger," Valentin reminded the elder of her own words in case she forgot to give an explanation about that warning.

"The Blood Moon child is a double-edged sword—a formidable weapon," Elder Alera said. "This child could usher in an age of peace and prosperity. But remember, a weapon is still a weapon. The price for peace and prosperity is steep."

History showed how the Blood Moon children wielded their power to devastating effect, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The rewards often came with a horrifying cost, and not everyone welcomed the ensuing bloodshed.

"Some will seek to exploit her power for their own ends," Elder Alera continued in a somber tone. "Others will try to eliminate her to prevent any threat she might pose."

After the urgent summons, nine elders gathered at Elder Alfred’s manor.

All those who had been chosen to communicate with the ancestors during the Blood Moon were present, with the exception of Elder Alera, who had failed to attend.

The gathered elders all felt the shockwave of alarm. It could only mean one thing: the Blood Moon child had awakened.

"The Blood Moon child is His Majesty’s niece," Elder Alfred opened up the discussion by stating the obvious.

The atmosphere was tense, and everyone was holding their breath as they anticipated Elder Alfred’s next move. Each of them had their own agenda, hoping their leader would share their goals and lead the discussion in their favor.

"That insolent, fangless vampire!" Elder Alfred roared, slamming his fist into the armrest. "I knew she would be trouble from the moment she arrived at the palace. His Majesty has been far too lenient with her discipline."

Two elders who were allies of Lady Maris nodded approvingly. Their spirits were lifted with Elder Alfred’s condemnation. Another elder, who harbored a personal grudge against Riona, also joined in Elder Alfred’s outrage.

The remaining elders were split: some sought to exploit Riona’s power for their own gain, while others hoped for the transformative change that a Blood Moon child could bring to the kingdom.

"If even His Majesty couldn’t keep her in check," Elder Alfred continued, his voice seething with disdain, "then no one can. A being so uncontrollable doesn’t deserve to wield the sacred power of the Moon."

He locked eyes with each elder, ensuring his next command was understood with absolute clarity, and said, "We need to eliminate her."
