Chapter 89: A Forbidden Love

Chapter 89: A Forbidden Love

Elder Alera had seen with her own eyes the chronological order of things going on in King Valentin’s life. She was already an elder at the time, and the previous king respected her as his mentor.

The previous king had appointed her to be the young Valentin’s mentor. Despite his age, he had grown up impressively, excelling in both academic and magical pursuits.

The only reason he always ended up second was because of Amara, his elder sister. From a young age, Amara had proven exceptional, surpassing her vampire peers with remarkable skills and prowess.

As far as Elder Alera knew, King Valentin had always been competitive, unless when it came to his sister. Instead of harboring a deep grudge for falling short of her standards, Valentin looked up to his sister.

To him, Amara was the epitome of perfection. He wholeheartedly believed she would be a terrific queen, leading the Kingdom of Eira to further greatness that no other vampire had ever achieved before.

The two vampire siblings had always been inseparable, sharing their troubles and resolving each other’s problems. They had been there for each other through thick and thin.

Among them, Amara was the free spirit, unrestrained by rules or societal expectations. She often caused turmoil during marriage negotiations with noble vampires, deliberately challenging the conventions of the court.

On such occasions, Valentin was the only one standing by her, defending her right to choose her own path. He had envisioned her falling in love with a high noble from a faraway vampire kingdom. Perhaps an emperor or someone of equal status.

Valentin was determined that only a prince would be worthy of Amara.

However, in his two hundredth year, the arrival of a wild, unruly man at the royal palace shattered his expectations.

The werewolf had appeared at the front gate of the palace, leaving behind a trail of dark red blood in his wake.

Valentin was supposed to escort Amara on an early evening walk that day, but he had been detained by extended training sessions, leaving her to stroll the garden alone. This unfulfilled promise haunted him deeply, even years later.

He often regretted that he hadn’t been there to confront the werewolf himself. Had he been present, he would have driven the creature away, no matter the cost. Even if the werewolf had faced a grim death right before his eyes, Valentin would have stood firm.

He would never have allowed such a beast to enter his home.

Unfortunately, Amara was an odd one.

Unlike other vampires who despised werewolves and humans due to their feelings of supremacy, Amara saw beyond these prejudices. She treated all beings with compassion and kindness.

She had gotten into trouble with her father for helping humans. Amara had repeatedly broken the rules to help those in need, defying the expectations of her society.

In Valentin’s eyes, Amara’s soft heart was her only and most significant flaw.

She would be perfect without it, Valentin had once confided in Elder Alera about the issue.

Regardless of how Valentin viewed his sister, Elder Alera had an opinion of her own. She held a different perspective. Instead of seeing Amara’s tender heart as a weakness, she believed it was her biggest strength.

Amara’s genuine kindness fostered trust and affection from others, garnering a level of sincere love that Valentin, with his reliance on fear to command respect and loyalty, could never achieve.

Letting a werewolf into the royal palace had already been a problem. The whole kingdom was thrown into chaos. Nobles were quick to voice their grievances. Their relentless complaints and nagging deafened the previous king’s ears.

In a bid to restore order, the previous king decreed that the werewolf be expelled from the kingdom. He deliberately made this announcement publicly, ensuring that everyone would recognize his decisive action as a demonstration of his wisdom and leadership.

But Amara was clever. Knowing the king would not rest until the werewolf was gone, she devised a ruse to deceive him. She pretended to send the werewolf away, while in reality, she was hiding him in a secret chamber within the royal palace.

This chamber was Amara’s sanctuary, where she had hidden her collection of forbidden books. Her thirst for knowledge was only satisfied with these books.

As they spent time together, Amara and the werewolf grew close, and before long, she found herself in love with him. She brought up the idea of an interracial marriage to her father, arguing that it aligned with Asvaldur’s vision of eternal world peace.

"We do not bow to Asvaldur or any other empire! You are the crown princess of the Kingdom of Eira, and your decisions must prioritize your people. You cannot act solely on personal desires or whims," the former king roared, slamming his fist against the armrest of the throne.

Valentin had always been on Amara’s side, but this time, he couldn’t bring himself to support her. Outside the court, he tried to persuade Amara to give the werewolf up. "He’s not worth it," Valentin argued.

"He is, Brother. He is worth it to me," she replied, maintaining the kindness in her voice.

As if taking his sister’s love was not enough, the werewolf had also started to steal her time. As she occupied herself with finding ways to legitimize her love for the werewolf, Valentin’s invitations were met with constant rejection.

The young vampire was angry. He felt as though he had been deprived of his cherished sister. All because of a filthy beast. Valentin could never understand what drew Amara to the werewolf.

Amara’s struggle against her father’s opposition lasted for decades. Despite her arguments, the previous king remained unyielding. This led Amara to give up on convincing him.

"I will not ask for Father’s permission," she announced to Valentin, out of the blue.

Valentin brightened with hope and expectations. "Did you break up with that werewolf?"

Instead of answering immediately, she smiled and gently ran her fingers through his silver hair. She looked into his gray eyes, which were identical to hers. "No, silly."

She leaned in close and whispered in his ear, "I’m going to elope with him."

Valentin’s world shattered before his eyes, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. His dreams crumbled, leaving only a void of darkness.

Amara maintained her smile and touched his chin as she said, "And I told you already, stop calling him ’werewolf.’ He has a name. Call him Remus."
