Chapter 79: King Rage-a-lot

Chapter 79: King Rage-a-lot

Riona didn’t know what had happened to make the king this angry. She could barely feel her legs; her whole body went numb with fear.

That Alpha had been proposing the marriage confidently! You would think that meant he had already obtained her uncle’s permission.

She cursed herself for not clarifying that part with Thorin during their negotiation of the marriage terms.

King Valentin’s chest heaved up and down with rage. His green eyes turned red with anger. Riona had never seen him like this.

If he hates werewolves this much, why did he invite Thorin for an alliance in the first place?

She couldn’t afford to think about the answer because her uncle didn’t give her time to rest. He raised his hand, clutching Riona by the throat with an invisible force.

"You will not leave this palace. I won’t ever let you," he declared.

It was a decree, not an order or a request. Riona would have asked why if her throat were not being choked by him.

If there was one good thing about being strangled in the air like that, it was that Riona could refrain from spouting the sarcasm that was already in her throat.

She was as good as dead if she tried.

After making sure that Riona got the message, King Valentin left the room. Shortly after, as if he had already been waiting somewhere nearby, Thorin entered.

Riona jumped at him, grabbing him by his collar. She was about to lash out, channeling her full frustration at this Alpha, when she spotted a skinny boy beside him.

Her anger immediately subsided. She collapsed, embracing Florian and pulling him close to her.

"Don’t be so rough. He’s still recuperating. You’re going to break him," warned Thorin, chuckling as he walked toward the sofa.

"Are you alright? Flo, are you still hurt somewhere? How’s your arm? That furry guy said you broke your leg. Does it still hurt?" Riona proceeded to inspect Florian’s body from head to toe.

The little vampire laughed as her touch was ticklish to him. Florian squirmed and stepped away from her. He raised his hands, signaling no to her questions.

When Riona calmed down, Florian drew closer and took her hand. He wrote on her palm: "I’m doing better. I’m sorry for worrying you."

Tears welled up in her eyes as soon as she heard that. Why did her brother have to apologize when it was her fault that he had been caught in that accident?

If Riona had kept a low profile and attracted no one’s attention, she wouldn’t have gathered so many enemies. Having fewer enemies would have meant a more peaceful life for both her and her brother.

But no, she just couldn’t keep her emotions and impulses in check. She just had to let people know of her fury in the worst way possible.

She took his hands and kissed his knuckles, then his fingers, the back of his hands, and his palms—everywhere. It was like she was trying to repay him for the challenges he had to go through.

Florian wrote something on her palm: "Are we leaving the palace?"

Riona lifted her face to send an angry glare at Thorin, finally realizing that he must have told Florian while she was locked up here.

"Uh, I don’t know about that, little bat. You see, His Majesty got kind of... uh... feisty. Wait. Uh, just sit wherever. Or rest in bed or something."

She jumped up and almost crashed into Thorin’s body on the sofa. She grabbed his outer coat and brought her face so close to him that anyone would think they were about to kiss.

Riona whispered in his reddening ears, "What did you do, huh? The king went ballistic and broke my bones. While I was tortured to near death, you were speaking nonsense to my brother?!"

Thorin scooted back, turning his face away from her. He tried his best to hide his expression, making her even angrier.

"Hey! I’m talking to you!" She grabbed his arm and pulled it away from his face.

He was as red as a tomato. With his large hand covering his lower face, he replied meekly, "It’s not nonsense. We’re getting married, right?"

Why does he get red every time? Is he sick or something?

Riona backed away. She studied Thorin’s face and finally asked what was on her mind. "Do you like me? Or do you have allergies to vampires?"

Thorin coughed violently as if something big was getting stuck in his throat. It took a while for him to regain composure. "No! You’re just too close. I’m a perfectly healthy man. It is normal to have physical reactions like this."

She thought about other men in her life to draw a comparison, and the only one who was almost at the same level was Sir Kai. She remembered his flushed face as well when she had hugged him abruptly.

Perhaps it was because he was surprised or, like Thorin said, a normal reaction for healthy men.

She didn’t dwell too much on it and went on with the matters at hand. "Anyway, I don’t think we can get married."

"What?" The color on Thorin’s face suddenly disappeared.

"Yeah." She crossed her arms and glared at him. You sounded so sure that you would marry me. "I thought you had obtained the king’s permission. What’s wrong with you? I almost died!"

Riona had an excellent self-healing ability. The cracked bones would soon heal, although it might mean more sleeping time for her. When her body self-healed, she would fall asleep, and the worse the injuries, the longer her sleep lasted.

"I did ask for his permission," Thorin insisted, but his expression suddenly changed as he diverted his gaze from her.

"Well, I kind of stated that we’ll get married no matter what. You said you don’t want any grand wedding, right? Just a blessing at the chapel?"

She gritted her teeth, growling. "You fool! King Valentin does not like anyone deciding something for him. I thought you succeeded in getting his consent through negotiation!"

He scratched the back of his head. "I planned to, but he looked like he was going to hinder us. I don’t have much time left, and you don’t want to stay here any longer, right?"

"Haahhh... we’re doomed now. He knows about our marriage plan and he’s deadly opposed to it. What should we do?"

Thorin pursed his lips before suggesting, "Why don’t we just run away from here?"
