Fangless: The Alpha's Vampire Mate
Chapter 66: Myth Busting

Chapter 66: Myth Busting

Was it just Riona, or did everyone also expect the voice of an ancestor to be a bit more... refined?

Shouldn’t an ancestor speak, like, in a low voice? Shouldn’t an ancestor use difficult words and have an air of mystery about them?

This voice claiming to be an ancestor was just too suspicious.

"Were you the cause of the sudden heat?" Riona asked, looking around as she didn’t know where to set her eyes. It was really awkward talking to the air, not knowing who was speaking to you.

"Uh, you don’t call that heat. That’s my mighty, magical power. You were feeling my great power, but of course, I controlled it to some extent so you wouldn’t have to talk to me naked," the alleged ancestor said.

Seriously? Is he Thorin’s ancestor, not mine? Because he has the same haughtiness as that Alpha.

He quickly added as if just remembering how bewildered and annoyed he was, "Anyway, who removes their clothes just because it’s hot? You’re crazy! No one—and I literally mean no one—has ever done what you did. They would usually just put up with it because what if you suddenly have to leave or fight? Would you do that bare-bodied?"

Riona rolled her eyes. She was about to retort when the ancestor clicked his tongue in disapproval. "Tsk, tsk! You don’t roll your eyes at your ancestor, kid!"

"Are you sure you’re my ancestor? I guess the hype about hearing an ancestor’s voice is nothing much. You must be an outcast among the powerful ancestors, right? You’re bored, so you talked to me because you weren’t allowed in the chapel," Riona said, crossing her arms and scoffing.

"Hey, you’re really rude! Are all vampires like you now? Back in my day—"

"Yeah, yeah. You do sound like an old man. I believe you. You must be really, extremely ancient," she cut him off, unwilling to hear a lecture from the ancestor.

"You’re bold. I was right to choose you," he said.

Riona raised an eyebrow. "Uh, I’m pretty certain that you chose me because I am the only one not celebrating the Blood Moon."

The ancestor cleared his throat. "Ahem. The reason I chose you is beyond a mere vampire’s comprehension. It is best that you don’t inquire about that."

She was convinced that she had hit a bullseye, judging from the ancestor’s lukewarm response. "So, what now, dear mighty Ancestor? What do you want from me?"

"Right. Back to business. Haven’t you heard what it means to hear an ancestor’s voice when you aren’t an elder?"

Riona plopped down to the floor, tired of standing around. "Let’s skip the puzzles. Just tell me. Are you going to give me power? Grant me a wish? I hope for the latter because I really, really need something right now."

"I’m not a genie. I can’t grant wishes. But I can enhance your power. Although I doubt that you need any. You’re really strong, Riona. You’re fun, too. It’s always a pleasure to see you and Lisbeth fighting it out. You know how to rub her the wrong way. That makes your whole feud much more interesting."

She waited for the answer she was looking for, but the ancestor just kept babbling nonsense. Was he speaking to her just to compliment her?

"I know you have nothing to do over there, and all you do is watch over us like we’re some kind of play. Can we get to the point now? I’ve had enough of a bad day. If you have nothing more to say, I’d like to be left alone," she said seriously.

Since the ancestor couldn’t grant her a wish, he was of no use to her. She didn’t need more power because she was already powerful enough.

The only way she would appreciate this ancestor’s presence was if he could erase the petition altogether.

The ancestor sighed, his voice finally taking on a serious tone. "Look, I believe that someone involved in something as huge as you must know what’s going on. The other ancestors think you need to figure this out on your own, and your man seems to agree, but I don’t."

"My man? Who are you talking about?" Riona interrupted, not believing her ears.

"That furry guy. Isn’t he your man? He’s been drooling all over you for some time now. He’s pretty outspoken about wanting to wed you, too."

"What’s Thorin got to do with this? And what are you even trying to tell me?"

The ancestor let out a tired breath. She imagined him massaging his temple if he were to have a physical form. "He knows that you’re a Blood Moon child. The Blood Moon child!"

"Isn’t that just a myth?" Riona found it difficult to take the ancestor seriously, given his tendency to say incoherent things.

A Blood Moon child was born during the Blood Moon, hence the name. However, not every child born on the night of a Blood Moon would automatically become a Blood Moon child.

This child was prophesied to be a being of immense power, born with the ability to influence both the mortal and supernatural worlds.

Ancient vampires believed that a Blood Moon child could bring change, destined to usher in a new era of either peace or chaos, depending on their choices.

The Blood Moon child would undergo various life trials, meaning their life would be miserable. Riona could relate to the Blood Moon child in terms of the tragedies they had to endure during childhood.

Most heroes—and villains—in fairy tales lost their parents, right? Yeah, this Blood Moon child would have the same fate too because nothing shaped a child better than being an orphan.

"If you’re talking about my parents’ death... well, yeah, it’s possible that I am the Blood Moon child," she muttered, more to herself than to the ancestor.

Moreover, the Blood Moon child possessed a potent power beyond belief.

"Right. I am strong. Too strong, sometimes," she pondered.
