Chapter 55: The Blushing Knight
Chapter 55: The Blushing Knight
"Thank you!" Riona’s eyes sparkled.
She had always thought of Sir Kai as someone inflexible and a killjoy. But this time, Sir Kai didn’t kill the joy; instead, he brought joy to her.
Instinctively, she jumped towards Sir Kai and wrapped her arms around his neck. He was too tall, making it difficult for her to reach him, so she settled for his arms instead.
Sir Kai blushed, his face heating up, and his body growing stiff. Riona, unaware of the effect her closeness had on the poor knight, continued pressing her body against his.
At that moment, the Alpha werewolf appeared. "Hm?" He raised an eyebrow, looking irritated for some unknown reason.
"Hey! Don’t be rude. He’s here to help," Riona reprimanded Thorin.
Thorin furrowed his brow, pouting and sulking. He even crossed his arms and looked away.
What a child!
"What does he have?" Puck asked as he extended his hand and took the scroll from Sir Kai.
Puck opened the scroll and read through the contents. Thorin, still sulking but curious, took a peek while maintaining his stance.
"This is the original score of the Nightwarden Trials," Puck remarked, unsurprised. "And the testimonies of Riona’s victory over Princess Lisbeth."
Sir Kai didn’t say anything. His face turned as red as a tomato, and his body remained stiff as a wall. Riona, oblivious to everything, let go of him and turned to Puck.
"That will be enough, right?" she asked for reassurance. Puck was insightful, and she trusted his judgment more than she trusted Thorin’s.
Puck thought hard before saying, "It’s difficult to say. The result of this fight can’t be predicted. We do have a powerful figure backing us, and we can argue our point using the evidence, but we’re facing Lady Maris and the princess. They are tough opponents."
Riona turned to Sir Kai and silently asked for his input, but he said nothing. "Sir Kai? Why are you dozing off?"
"Dozing off? Riona, you must have mercy on him. Huft." Thorin retorted, pausing to take a breather as he brushed off his hair and looked at Sir Kai.
She was the only one who didn’t understand why these guys were acting weirdly, while Thorin understood what Sir Kai felt because he had been there. He had been one of the victims of Riona’s oblivion.
Puck put an end to the conversation as it slowly shifted away from their plan. "Let’s prepare a proper argument for the evidence. We must speak confidently so everyone will believe us."
In truth, Puck was not very confident in their pursuit. He and Thorin were werewolves, while Riona was an outcast. Sir Kai was the only one who stood his ground among them, but he was still just a knight.
"Alright. That’s it then," Riona said, concluding the discussion. She turned to Sir Kai, whose face gradually returned to its original color. "Are you okay? Are you sick?"
"Uh, no," Sir Kai said, flustered. He jumped backward, maintaining a certain distance from her. "I, uh, okay. I’ll leave now. We’ll meet again at the masquerade."
As soon as Sir Kai left, Thorin approached Riona and said in a low voice, "Is this your definition of not being close? You hugged him!"
Riona stared at Thorin with a straight face. "Really? Alpha, there seems to be something very wrong with your priorities."
Thorin quickly turned to Puck as if afraid Puck would scold him. The second-in-command werewolf stood there with a tired gaze. There was something between them that Riona didn’t know.
"Do you want to take a walk? Just the two of us," Thorin suddenly invited Riona, gently pushing her to get away from Puck. "Puck, you can return to your room. When I return, I’ll review your final plans."
Final plans? Puck seemed to want to ask that, but he remained silent. They had finalized the plan a few days ago, and there was nothing left to do but fit clothes for the masquerade.
Puck exhaled and said, "We’re leaving for the town square in an hour. It will be the last fitting for your suits and mask for the masquerade."
"Alright. I’ll see you later." Thorin waved at Puck, his left hand still on Riona’s waist, pushing her lightly.
Riona gave Thorin a side-eye. "What are you doing? Why a walk all of a sudden? Did something happen between you and Puck?"
Thorin lifted his chin thoughtfully, slowing his pace to match Riona’s. "We had a minor disagreement. He’s smart, alright, but he can be... presumptuous at times. But it will be fine. This isn’t the first time such a disagreement has happened."
"I’m starting to sympathize with Puck. He has to deal with someone like you all the time. It must be hard on him," she said.
"Oh, so you’re on Puck’s side now? And here I thought you might appreciate my company more."
Riona rolled her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips. "Don’t flatter yourself, Alpha. I’m just being considerate. It must be exhausting keeping up with you."
She thought for a moment and repeated her question, still seeking an answer. "But, seriously, why the sudden walk? Are you trying to distract me or something?"
Thorin’s expression shifted briefly, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features before he masked it with a grin. "Distract you? From what? Sir Kai? The knight who blushes at a mere hug? Please, I’m just ensuring you’re not left alone. Can’t have you wandering off and getting into trouble."
You were beet red when I hugged you during the dance too. And that incident in Lisbeth’s wardrobe that I want to forget so badly. You have no right to mock him for being innocent!
"Oh, so you want to become my babysitter now? I’m touched," Riona replied dryly.
"You know," Thorin said, his voice lowering slightly, "you have a way of getting under people’s skin."
"Is that your way of saying I’m annoying?" Riona asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Not annoying. Just... memorable," Thorin said, his tone softening. "You have a knack for making an impression."
Riona glanced at him. "Well, if it’s a talent, then you must be a genius. And for what it’s worth, thanks for helping out. Even if you’re being weird about it."
She finally managed to blurt out the word ’thank you,’ which had almost killed her the other day when she tried to say it to Thorin. But the days they had spent together rallying her mother’s supporters had made her more comfortable around him.
