Chapter 275: Little Secret, Big Secret

Chapter 275: Little Secret, Big Secret

The room she had left behind was always neat and orderly. Every morning, she made sure to tuck the sheets, smooth the pillows, and straighten the corners before heading off to work, knowing she would return to a tidy sanctuary.

So, naturally, when she walked in and saw things out of place—like the wardrobe door that wasn’t closed properly and the cupboard that had been left ajar—her brain immediately jumped to the worst-case scenario. Someone had invaded her space.

Yes, of course, she was that important. Why wouldn’t anyone want to come ransack a nameless servant’s meticulously organized lair?

She strode straight to her wardrobe. It wasn’t her clothes she checked first but something far more important—something no one should ever discover she possessed.

Yes, she was the owner of that questionable artwork. And yes... that other item. The one Sir Kai would rather wipe from his memory altogether.

To her surprise, all her precious, slightly incriminating possessions were still there—though someone had clearly rearranged them. She exhaled a dramatic sigh of relief. Then, the true horror dawned on her. Maybe screaming in panic wasn’t her brightest move.

What if the Lordship ordered a full investigation? If a thief had truly broken in, wouldn’t this chamber be the first place they searched? And if that happened, what were the chances that someone would find... that tucked away among her garments?

Oh, no. What if rumors started swirling about her ownership of such scandalous items? What if people started whispering?

Would it ruin her prospects of marriage? She had long dreamed of climbing the social ladder, of charming an aristocrat—any aristocrat, really. His title mattered more than his wealth. A title was her key to high society.

And all of that could crumble with a single revelation.

Well, naturally, it was already too late. Her spontaneous scream—loud enough to rattle the windows—didn’t just summon the housekeeper. Oh no, it had the magical power to gather half the servants in the manor, like they were suddenly all on high alert for a cataclysmic event.

And let’s be clear: it wasn’t just the staff that got the memo. No, everyone heard that scream. It probably echoed all the way to the neighboring village.

Even the Lordship, in the middle of his very secret meeting with his esteemed friends, was caught off guard. But he was, of course, the Lord of the manor, so there was no way he would panic and rush off like a commoner at the first sign of chaos. Absolutely not.

He took his sweet time, calmly reassuring his guests that everything was under control. Then, and only then, did he finally step out of the drawing room to investigate.

Meanwhile, Sir Kai—clever, slippery Sir Kai—had already made his move. He didn’t leap out of the window into the tree he had used to climb in. Oh, no. That would’ve been far too obvious.

Instead, he opted for the more discreet route, slipping into the room beside the housekeeper’s chamber through the balcony. After all, he’d gone this far. There was no way he was letting a random scream derail his entire operation.

It was sheer luck, honestly. The servant had been so entirely consumed by her own little drama with her precious possessions that she completely missed the fact that Sir Kai was still hiding in the room when she entered.

He was like a shadow, lurking behind furniture and any large object that could half-cover his body—methodically inching toward the window.

Had the servant possessed even a smidgen of common sense and bothered to look behind her, she would’ve caught him red-handed.

But she didn’t. And thus began the delightful, almost comical game of cat and mouse with a thief who was very much not ready to give up just because some panicked scream filled the air.

***

A grand-scale investigation—so grand, in fact, that it could only be described as absurdly excessive for a mediocre manor owned by a lower-ranked lordship.

The Lordship, in his infinite wisdom, had commanded everyone under his authority to scour the entire vicinity with the kind of thoroughness usually reserved for an ancient treasure hunt. He even went so far as to suggest that the border be closed.

Now, of course, he didn’t actually have the authority to do that, but he was wealthy enough to pull some strings and make it happen. By the time the sun had barely cracked the horizon, all escape routes had been locked down tighter than a vault. No thief, no matter how skilled, was getting out.

Meanwhile, no one had the faintest idea that the so-called ’thief’—a.k.a. Sir Kai—was still lurking within the very walls they were tearing apart. They rushed around in a frenzy, oblivious to the fact that the very person they were searching for was chilling just a few rooms away.

It was a nightmare for both Sir Kai and the female servant. Why? Because her worst fear had come to life in the worst possible way: all her precious hidden treasures were now out in the open for the entire manor to see.

Naturally, she broke down in dramatic sobs on the floor. But, let’s be honest, no one cared.

You see, no one was even remotely interested in the deeply private collection of risqué items she kept for... whatever purposes she deemed appropriate.

As long as it didn’t interfere with her work (and it didn’t), no one was about to bat an eye. And let’s not forget, not a single gentleman in the Lordship’s employ had any romantic inclinations toward her.

So, in the grand scheme of things, she had risked absolutely nothing by being a slightly eccentric collector of... whatever.

Meanwhile, Sir Kai was grappling with the one question no one else had bothered to consider. To everyone else, the Lordship’s over-the-top reaction to this ’theft’ probably seemed like a desperate flex of his authority—an attempt to prove how powerful and important he was.

But Sir Kai wasn’t buying it.

He muttered under his breath, "You must be hiding something, something so precious you’re terrified a measly thief like me might get his hands on it. What exactly are you so scared of being found out?"

As he listened intently to every footstep, creak, and muffled cough in the manor, it became clear: the female servant wasn’t the only one with a secret stash of questionable items.

The Lordship had a little secret of his own. And whatever that something was... well, Sir Kai had a sneaking suspicion it might just be the thing he’d been looking for all along.

Because, let’s face it: if a man went to this much trouble just to keep someone out of his manor, he’s either hiding a fortune or a very embarrassing collection of something no one wants to talk about.

Either way, Sir Kai was about to find out.
