Chapter 168: The West Gate

Chapter 168: The West Gate

Lisbeth put on her armor with swift precision, her expression hardened with resolve. There was no time to waste. The enemy was closing in.

Her voice cut through the chaos as she barked orders to the servants capable of fighting. Their fear was shown in their eyes but muted by the urgency of her command.

"To the west gate!" she roared, rallying them. Every second counted as they awaited King Valentin’s troops to reinforce the western defenses.

But the battle waited for no one. When Lisbeth reached the west building, the air was thick with the clash of powers and the sickening smell of blood. The enemy had already breached the gates, pouring in like a relentless tide.

Without hesitation, she bellowed, "Charge!" her voice ringing out over the chaos.

Beside the gate, Lumi stood with her hands outstretched. Her brow furrowed in concentration as she summoned a glowing shield, its energy crackling in the air. Sweat dripped down her face, her strength nearly tapped out.

"Arghh!!!!" Lumi screamed at the top of her lungs. Her face reddened.

Despite her efforts, some of the enemy managed to slip by climbing the walls, bypassing her defenses. The two knights she had brought with her stood beside her, guarding her fiercely from incoming attacks.

Though Lumi was the most skilled defender Lisbeth knew, she was still just a student at the vampire academy—her powers raw and unrefined. Against an army of seasoned vampire knights, her abilities were stretched to the limit.

Lisbeth’s heart was pounding in her chest as she leaped onto the battlefield, her boots hitting the ground with a solid thud. She steadied herself, feet planted wide, her right arm sweeping through the air, channeling her power.

She braced for the surge she knew was coming—too much power could backfire, ricocheting painfully within her. But she couldn’t hold back now.

With a sharp breath, the ground beneath her feet froze over, transforming the earth into a sheet of gleaming ice.

The enemy stumbled for a moment, but a vampire knight reacted swiftly, exhaling a torrent of fire that melted the ice in an instant, steam hissing and rising around them.

Undeterred, Lisbeth raised both arms, summoning sharp, glowing blue stakes, hurling them through the air in rapid succession.

She shaped the stakes as thin as possible, conserving her energy while attempting to strike as many foes as she could. The sky became a blur of blue streaks as they cut through the air like daggers.

Several enemy soldiers were hit, blue stakes piercing their armor, but the thin spikes lacked the force to deal any lethal damage. With grimaces of pain, the vampires yanked the stakes from their bodies and charged forward once again, their crimson eyes burning with rage.

A swirling vortex of dark red energy hurtled toward Lisbeth, its sinister force threatening to engulf her. But just before it could strike, a radiant shield appeared in front of her, deflecting the attack with a loud crack.

Lisbeth spun around and saw Lumi, barely standing. Her friend was panting, sweat pouring down her pale face, her body trembling from exhaustion. Lumi had pushed herself far beyond her limits, teetering on the edge of collapse.

"Lumi, enough!" Lisbeth shouted, her voice desperate. "You’ve done more than enough. Leave the rest to me!"

But Lumi shook her head, her determination unshaken even as her body betrayed her. She raised a trembling arm, struggling to stay upright as she staggered backward.

A knight rushed to her side, gripping her shoulders, urging her to stop before she collapsed entirely. But Lumi refused to back down.

"I’m your best defense right now," she gasped, her voice weak but filled with defiance. "Without me, the palace will fall... everything will be torn to pieces."

Lisbeth gritted her teeth, finally recognizing the depth of Lumi’s courage. "Then it’s in your hands," she said, before launching herself into the fray with fierce determination.

There was no room for hesitation now. Lisbeth’s mind raced. She had to eliminate these vampire knights before her friend collapsed from exhaustion. None of them could be allowed to penetrate the inner palace.

Her mother—had she made it out safely? There was no way to know. But she couldn’t afford to lose focus.

"Hold the inner courtyard!" Lisbeth roared, her voice sharp and commanding.

Always the Vanguard, Lisbeth was renowned as the fiercest attacker in the vampire academy—second to Riona until Riona’s disappearance left Lisbeth as the academy’s unmatched force on the battlefield.

The vampire princess became a blur of motion, a deadly combination of raw physical power and precise vampiric skill. She dashed through the enemy ranks, her hands glowing with lethal blue stakes, unleashing them in close-range strikes for maximum impact. Each blow was deliberate, swift, and devastating.

In seconds, the first row of enemy vampires crumpled under her assault, bodies dropping as Lisbeth carved her way through them.

From behind, Lumi, though barely standing, smirked through her labored breathing and yelled with every ounce of strength she had left, "Take that, you filthy bloodsuckers! That’s our princess!"

How ironic—did Lumi forget that she was also a vampire?

The west area of the palace immediately turned into a massacre. Any available Royal Guards stood their grounds, but they were badly pushed back. Meanwhile, the additional help by utilizing servants didn’t help them much.

The west wing of the palace quickly descended into carnage. The Royal Guards held their ground, but they were swiftly overwhelmed. Even the reinforcements of hastily armed servants did little to stem the enemy’s advance.

Bodies hit the ground, and the air filled with cries of pain and rage.

Lisbeth wanted to ask about her father’s arrival, but she couldn’t risk exposing the king’s absence. If the enemy learned King Valentin wasn’t there, it would embolden them to attack even more fiercely.

Gritting her teeth, Lisbeth stepped into the role of commander without hesitation, concocting strategies as she threw herself back into the chaos.

The palace, vast and sprawling, was divided by its terrain. The eastern side led to the main road and the bustling heart of the city, while the west side was slightly elevated, an uphill fortress.

Whatever happened on the western side of the palace was concealed from the rest of the palace. In this uphill battle, they were fighting blind—and time was running out.

"His Majesty is on his way!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the clamor of battle. "Hold the line! Do not lose hope!"

Yet even as the words left her lips, Lisbeth knew the truth weighed heavily on everyone—especially the Royal Guards.

They were being pushed back, and they all knew it. But hope, however fragile, was the only weapon left.
