Chapter 109: Noble Sales Pitch

"Ladies," Lady Maris began softly but firmly.

Her gaze lingered on each woman in the room to emphasize her next words. "The kingdom is at a crossroads, and those who choose wisely will find themselves on the right side of history."

The ladies exchanged another round of glances, but this time there was a different energy—less guarded, more thoughtful.

"His Excellency may be gathering support, but his path is one of conflict and instability. The king, on the other hand, offers a future where our families can thrive, where our influence can grow."

Elder Alfred might have been powerful, but he was far more volatile than King Valentin. He was also known for showing favoritism among the nobles under his patronage, unlike King Valentin, who remained loyal to those who had made significant contributions.

"There’s still time to ensure your place in the kingdom’s future, a future where we all prosper together."

Margravine Anastasia hesitated before speaking. "But isn’t it dangerous to align oneself too quickly? Especially when the outcome is still uncertain?"

It was wishful thinking on Lady Maris’s part to insist that the endgame was already determined. Although King Valentin was the ultimate leader of the kingdom, some believed that the king should merely be a puppet leader.

For a long time, the high nobility, especially those close to the elders, had opined that the elders were better suited to guide the kingdom to prosperity.

After all, the elders had earned their titles through deeds and wisdom, while kings and queens ascended by mere birthright.

Lady Maris pursed her deep rose lips and said, "Of course, caution is necessary. But sometimes, waiting too long can be just as dangerous."

Lady Leora shifted in her seat, still wary but clearly considering Lady Maris’s words. "And you believe the king will prevail?"

A warm smile curled on Maris’s lips. Her words seeped into the room like a slow, persuasive tide.

"I do. The king understands the value of alliances, and he knows how to reward those who stand by him. With the right support, his victory is assured."

The ladies fell silent, each lost in their thoughts. Lady Maris could see the gears turning in their minds, the hesitation slowly giving way to a reluctant acceptance.

"It’s not just about us," Lady Maris continued softly. "It’s about our families, our futures. We have the opportunity to secure our place in the kingdom, to ensure that our children and grandchildren inherit a world where they can thrive."

Landgravine Hestia nodded. "Perhaps it’s time to reconsider our positions."

Lady Maris smiled. "I’m glad to hear that. Together, we can shape the future of this kingdom—one where we all stand strong."

Lisbeth sprang into action upon hearing about Elder Alfred’s move through Cielo. She had entirely moved beyond gushing about King Valentin’s affectionate gesture.

Instead, she was now determined to be stronger than ever to help when the time came.

The incident during Riona’s escape made her realize how weak she had been. Although King Valentin might have protected her out of a fatherly wish to see his daughter unharmed, things could have been different if Lisbeth had been stronger.

She replayed the incident over and over again. In the scenarios in her head, King Valentin finally saw her true worth and value. She was acknowledged for her efforts and subsequently became her father’s sole royal guard.

Lisbeth spent every waking moment in the training hall, pushing herself to the limit.

She managed to attend her classes at the academy, but even then, her breaks were devoted to more training in the academy’s facilities.

Cielo and Lumi struggled to keep up with her relentless pace.

"Your Highness, aren’t you pushing yourself too hard? Your body can’t take this if you don’t rest," Lumi cautioned with carefully chosen words to avoid provoking Lisbeth.

Since hearing about Elder Alfred’s planned mutiny, Lisbeth’s usual generosity had vanished. She had reverted to her sharp-tongued, no-nonsense self.

Glaring at Lumi, Lisbeth retorted, "Don’t compare me to yourself. If you can’t keep up, it’s because you’re not capable. But I’m different."

In many ways, it was true—Lisbeth was built differently from her peers, with the notable exception of Riona. She was far stronger, more agile, and possessed greater stamina than most.

The royal blood of King Valentin coursing through her veins enhanced her already extraordinary abilities. She was also a strategic thinker, inheriting her father’s cunning mind.

But still, even with her innate superiority, Lisbeth was not invincible.

"My father will not go along with Elder Alfred’s plan," Cielo said, trying to reassure Lisbeth. "Let the adults handle this problem."

Lisbeth turned toward Cielo with a sharp gaze. "If you’re content to watch your father face a bloody battle alone, that’s your choice. I won’t interfere. But don’t think you can stop me. I will stand by my father, no matter what you say."

No one would truly face the battle alone, of course.

Realistically speaking, Cielo’s father charge ahead with his formidable army, and King Valentin would be surrounded by his massive Royal Guard, ensuring he wouldn’t fight alone.

Besides, they were discussing a figurative battle. The likelihood of an all-out conflict was slim, especially with Emperor Kaan still within the palace. Elder Alfred wouldn’t dare launch an open attack.

But Cielo couldn’t voice her thoughts.

"We haven’t even graduated yet. What could we possibly do? We’d only get in their way," she argued, attempting to reason with Lisbeth.

But Lisbeth just wouldn’t listen. "If all you’re going to do is nag, then get out and clear the training hall. I’d rather train alone than listen to flies buzzing in my ear."

Cielo and Lumi exchanged a glance before sighing in frustration.

"Your Excellency, we are down to three votes. I’ve explored every option, but many nobles left stranded by the expelled elders have aligned themselves with those supporting the king," Lady Tanith reported to Elder Alfred.

The elder’s face darkened with frustration. "What about Margrave Nicholas? Have we received any word from him? I believe we’ve given him ample time to decide."

"I’m afraid not, Your Excellency. I will send someone to press him for a response," Lady Tanith replied.

"How dare he! A mere noble dares to delay negotiations with me!" Elder Alfred seethed. "How long will he make me wait? It is an honor for him to be considered for recruitment by me personally."

He clenched his fist and slammed the armrest of his chair. "With his army, he’s become too arrogant. If he didn’t have a vote, I wouldn’t even bother with him."

Elder Alfred’s pride was deeply wounded. He was not used to nobles not treating him with the obedience he was used to. For thousands of years, since becoming an elder, he had been accustomed to being worshipped and flattered.

"Should we consider persuading Count Isaac?" Lady Tanith suggested.

Elder Alfred winced as if the mere mention of the name was repugnant. "Absolutely not! He betrayed me."

Although Count Isaac had not been involved in the Blood Moon child’s case, his correspondence with Lady Maris after the incident was perceived by Elder Alfred as a betrayal.

"Let’s approach Emperor Kaan," the elder said, a broad grin spreading across his face as if he had found the perfect solution.

However, Lady Tanith, his closest aide, was skeptical about involving Emperor Kaan in the matter.
