She turned and pulled the back door shut with a snap of the lock. The person behind must have been dumbfounded upon hitting the door. Next to the storage room was a hallway, through which Xie Wanying dashed like the wind, instantly reaching the front door, and with another snap, she secured the lock.

Xie Wanying was already dialing the security office number, she remembered it well since Sister Lingling had just mentioned it.

“Hello, is this the security office? Please send someone to the second floor of the inpatient department, there’s a thief, I’ve locked him in the storage room!”

Upon receiving her emergency call, the hospital security personnel rushed to the inpatient department building, scrambling upstairs to the second floor.

The person locked in the storage room, upon hearing people approaching, grew even more frantic, to the point of wanting to bash their head against the wall, and the thuds against the door became louder.

“What’s going on?” two security guards ran up to her, heard the sounds of the door being hit, and, as the lighting here was quite dim, turned on their flashlights, shining on the door.

“Be careful, I don’t know if he’s carrying any weapons,” Xie Wanying said, not wanting to have called the security guards only to put them in danger.

Hearing her words, the two guards exchanged looks, grabbed their walkie-talkies to contact other personnel in the security office, and, after consulting with superiors, decided to call the police.

“Can I go now? I need to get back to the ward,” Xie Wanying said as she saw that the police were on their way and the situation was under control.

“Which department’s doctor are you?” one of the guards eyed her ID badge.

“I’m an intern in General Surgery Department Two.”

“How did you discover him?”

“I was downstairs looking for a patient from our department who snuck out to meet friends outside. When I was heading back to the department, I noticed he was following me.”

“Did you see what he looks like?”

“No, I didn’t look back. I didn’t dare to — just ran first,” said Xie Wanying.

Upon hearing this, one of the guards scanned her face and gave a thumbs-up: Smart!

“Do you know who he is?” the guard asked again.

“I don’t know!” Xie Wanying shook her head firmly, sure that from the breathing she could tell she hadn’t seen this person before, she didn’t recognize him.

“A stranger, then he’s a thief. Probably someone who entered our hospital and ran into one of our doctors, thinking of robbing them,” the two guards speculated, waving her off to indicate she could go.

Xie Wanying headed back to her department.

As she walked, she reached the elevator, deciding to take it considering her legs were slightly weak. Thinking back on the incident, she truly felt a little scared. She would have to thank Senior Tao later for that warning.

“What happened?” someone opened the door to a ward and saw her by the elevator, asking–the noise had probably drawn them out to check on the situation.

“It’s nothing, the security is here,” Xie Wanying called back.

“Why did you call security?”

“It’s nothing, it’s nothing.” The elevator door opened and Xie Wanying stepped in, eager to return to her department.

Seeing her rush, the other person walked over, but with the doors closing, they could only watch which floor she went to: “Sixth floor? Is she from General Surgery Department Two or Orthopedics Department Three?”

Xie Wanying returned to General Surgery Department Two. As she passed by ward nine, she glanced inside: all the patients were sleeping soundly, including the old lady from bed nine who had been suffering from diarrhea.
