Almost forty minutes had passed when a nurse looked up at the clock on the wall and did the calculation.
In their memory, they had never seen such a lengthy examination; everyone was a bit stupefied, unclear about what was happening. The problem was that even with such a detailed examination, their colleague lying on the exam bed was just the same, unable to specify the exact spot that hurt when pressed by the doctor. It always was a vague pain everywhere in the abdomen.
Finally, Xie Wanying finished the examination and said to the patient, “Let’s order some tests.”
“What tests do I need?” the patient asked, sitting up from the examination bed.
“An ultrasound, and if possible, a CT scan can be added,” Xie Wanying replied. “I’ll write you a test order and get a teacher to sign off on it.”
“You don’t need to specifically get your teacher to sign off,” the nurse spoke up quickly. “We can directly find the doctors in the ultrasound or CT room to do it.” That way it would be faster, and not such a hassle. It was just a test, not a prescription; any doctor’s signature would do.
At the nurse’s suggestion, Xie Wanying went ahead and wrote the test order.
While she was writing, a group of nurses surrounded her and asked, “Did you feel anything?”
“There might be some issue around the bladder,” Xie Wanying said.
The bladder? The nurses paused: Was it cystitis or stones?
“Hurry and get it checked; her condition seems to have been going on for a while. A CT would probably be better.”
“Then let’s do a CT,” the patient herself said. She had never had a CT and had been thinking about it, but was unsure which part to examine.
Without further discussion, the group took the test order from Xie Wanying’s hands and hurried off to the CT room to schedule the test.
After a brief rest at noon, they headed to the operating room in the afternoon. When they arrived, the teachers hadn’t come down yet; Xie Wanying ran into a few classmates who were also there for the operating room.
Lin Hao and she washed their hands together at a sink, and he asked her, “Is it difficult to hold retractors? Today, the class leader and I are scheduled to go up to the operating table and hold retractors.”
In the midst of talking, Yue Wentong walked over and stood beside them, applying soap to his hands.
Glad to have a fellow surgical student initiate a conversation, Xie Wanying answered, “It’s a bit tiring.”
“Yes, they said it’s tiring. They’re worried we might not be used to it, so they’ve arranged for us two to take turns,” Lin Hao said, and then he asked her, “Did you rotate with others when it was your turn? How soon did you start feeling tired?”
“I was alone, held them for almost a few hours,” Xie Wanying said.
Lin Hao and Yue Wentong both “swooshed” and glanced at her simultaneously.
“Why don’t you guys try it alone, talk to the teacher and see,” Xie Wanying suggested. The boys in her class exercised their arm strength just as she did; she didn’t think they would be worse off than her.
After hearing her suggestion, Yue Wentong and Lin Hao pondered.
The sound of surgical clogs approaching from a distance grew louder until Gao Zhaocheng arrived next to the trio. That afternoon’s surgery was arranged by him for Lin Hao and the others to go on stage and try their hand at holding retractors. Thinking that his junior sister was already guiding others, he had to quickly pick other promising candidates from her class.
“Senior Gao,” the three students called out uniformly.
Gao Zhaocheng’s eyes swiftly scanned over their faces and suddenly paused on Xie Wanying, his left hand on his hip, “You–”
Why was Senior Gao staring at her? Had she done something wrong? Xie Wanying stopped as well, feeling a bit confused and uneasy.
