Chapter 58: Breakfast

Chapter 58: Breakfast

Hunger stirred Noelle from his slumber, a sharp reminder of the early morning. His limbs stretched languidly, and he blinked groggily into the soft light of dawn filtering through the sheer curtains. Something felt off, and it took him a moment to realize the bed beside him was empty. A frown pulled at his lips as his hand moved over the cool sheets where Thorne should’ve been.

Anger bubbled up in his chest, frustration welling within him. They hadn’t seen each other in over a month, and now Thorne had the nerve to slip away before morning?

Before he could fully process his irritation, a calm voice interrupted his thoughts, sending a jolt through his body.

"Good morning."

Noelle turned sharply, his heart racing, only to find a strict-looking woman standing by the door. Dressed in maid attire, her dark eyes betrayed no emotion, and her hair was slicked back into a perfect bun. Her expression was unreadable, her posture as rigid as a statue.

"Who are you?" Noelle asked, still gathering himself after the surprise.

"My apologies," she said smoothly. "I’ve been assigned by the master to be your personal servant and guard."

A faint flush rose in Noelle’s cheeks. He quickly composed himself, shaking off the lingering grogginess. Of course, he reminded himself, he was married to one of the most powerful men in the kingdom. This should be expected by now.

"Uhh... okay," Noelle muttered, still adjusting to the formality. But with a small nod, he straightened his back. "Of course."

He stepped out of bed, fully aware of his nudity, and though the situation felt a little awkward, he told himself to get used to it. If Thorne allowed this woman to stay by his side, it meant he trusted her. Thorne’s possessiveness would never allow someone unworthy to serve him this closely.

Noelle stumbled slightly as he made his way towards the bathroom, and with swift efficiency, the woman caught his arm to stabilize him.

"Thank you..." Noelle paused, realizing he didn’t know her name.

"Doris," she responded, her voice devoid of emotion.

"Well, I hope we work well together, Doris," Noelle replied, offering her a small, tight smile before heading into the bathroom to wash up. Doris followed behind him, assisting in the bath and helping him dress. To Noelle’s surprise, she was remarkably good at her job, despite her stern demeanor. Each movement was precise, practiced, and respectful.

Now, as Noelle moved through the grand corridors of the castle, Doris followed closely behind him, her presence a silent shadow. The castle was immense—its halls stretching endlessly, adorned with rich tapestries, towering columns, and glistening chandeliers. The sheer size of it already had him feeling winded. His legs ached from the walk, and a part of him wondered if just navigating this labyrinth would be enough to improve his stamina.

As they passed the other servants, maids and attendants bowed deeply to him. Noelle forced himself to keep his head high, maintaining the regal air he had spent hours practicing in the mirror for moments like this. The last thing he wanted was to be seen as a weakness or a stain on Thorne’s reputation. He was already considered Thorne’s vulnerability in the eyes of some—he wouldn’t add to that by appearing frail or unworthy of his title.

Doris, ever silent, remained close, her watchful eyes ensuring nothing went amiss as they walked. But Noelle’s mind was elsewhere—on Thorne. His frustration hadn’t faded. He wanted answers.

It didn’t take long for him to reach Thorne’s office, where a pair of large, ornate doors stood like a barrier to the man he had missed so deeply. Noelle took a deep breath, composed himself, and entered.

Thorne sat at his desk, papers strewn before him, his blonde hair still slightly damp from his morning routine. He looked up as Noelle stepped inside, and for a moment, guilt flickered across his features.

"Good morning, my star," Thorne greeted, his voice soft, almost apologetic.

Noelle crossed the room without a word and took a seat opposite him, his eyes narrowing slightly. "You left me alone," he said, though there was no venom in his tone—just a hint of disappointment.

Thorne sighed, setting his papers aside. "I know. I’m sorry," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I had some urgent matters to attend to... but I should’ve stayed. Especially after how long it’s been."

Noelle watched him for a moment, the tension easing out of his shoulders. The sight of Thorne, seated before him and speaking with such tenderness, chipped away at his earlier frustration. He had missed this—missed him. And though the apology was enough, Noelle wasn’t about to let him off that easily.

"I’ll forgive you," Noelle said, "but only if breakfast is served here. Together."

A smile tugged at Thorne’s lips, and he leaned back in his chair, his blue eyes sparkling with affection. "That can be arranged."

Moments later, breakfast was brought into the office—an array of fresh bread, fruit, and warm tea laid before them. Noelle’s stomach growled at the sight, his earlier hunger finally catching up to him. He glanced at Thorne, who had already started filling his plate, and for a brief moment, everything felt right. The distance of the past month faded, replaced by the comfort of their shared space, their quiet moments of connection.

"I’ve missed this," Noelle admitted between bites, his voice softer now.

Thorne looked at him, his gaze steady and filled with warmth. "I missed you too. More than I can put into words."

Noelle took a bite of the warm bread, letting its buttery flavor melt on his tongue. His gaze drifted lazily to Thorne, who was focused on his plate, moving with the meticulousness that always amused Noelle. He noticed how Thorne’s hands moved gracefully as he cut into his food, and he smirked, feeling the need to break the silence with something light-hearted.

"You know," Noelle began, leaning back in his chair, "for someone who just left their partner alone in bed after a month apart, you’re awfully calm."

Thorne glanced up, raising a brow, amusement flickering in his blue eyes. "Calm? I’d say I’m the picture of restraint."

"Restraint, huh?" Noelle echoed, his lips quirking into a teasing smile. "Funny, I don’t remember you being so ’restrained’ last night."

Thorne chuckled softly, shaking his head as he set his fork down. "Last night was different. I missed you."

Noelle leaned forward, his chin resting in his palm as he gave Thorne a mischievous look. "And this morning? You didn’t miss me then?"

Thorne’s expression softened as he leaned back in his chair, a slow smile spreading across his face. "I missed you this morning too, but if I had stayed in bed, we wouldn’t have gotten out. And you wouldn’t have had breakfast." He gestured toward the plate in front of Noelle.

"I would’ve survived," Noelle replied, giving him a playful look. "I’m not sure about you, though."

Thorne let out a low laugh, and the sound sent a pleasant warmth through Noelle. There was something about hearing Thorne laugh, something so genuine and light-hearted, that made moments like these even more precious.

"You’re right," Thorne admitted, his voice dropping into a more intimate tone. "I don’t know how much longer I could’ve lasted with you beside me."

Thorne’s smile turned tender, and he stood from his chair, rounding the table with slow, deliberate steps. Noelle watched as he approached, his heart beating a little faster, and by the time Thorne stood in front of him, he could feel the heat of his presence.

Noelle leaned into the touch, his earlier frustration evaporating entirely. The intimacy in Thorne’s touch, in his voice, sent a pleasant shiver down Noelle’s spine. He looked up, meeting Thorne’s gaze, and saw nothing but affection and warmth in those blue eyes.

They stayed like that for a few moments longer, wrapped in each other’s warmth, the soft morning light filtering into the room. Noelle’s earlier hunger for food had shifted into something else—an undeniable hunger for Thorne’s presence, his touch, and the love that radiated between them like a steady pulse. He smiled, feeling utterly content for the first time in what felt like ages.

"I hope you don’t have too many meetings today," Noelle whispered, his lips now brushing against the sensitive skin of Thorne’s neck. He felt a smirk forming as he heard Thorne’s breath catch slightly under the teasing touch.

Thorne’s voice was a little rough when he responded, "I can clear my schedule."

"Good," Noelle replied, a teasing gleam in his eyes as he met Thorne’s gaze once more, pulling him into another kiss. This time, it was deeper, more insistent, a reflection of the fire simmering between them. "Because I’m not done with you yet."

A low groan escaped Thorne’s lips as he tightened his grip around Noelle’s waist, the sound sending a thrill through Noelle’s body. Thorne’s usual composure was slipping, and Noelle reveled in that rare vulnerability.

"I wouldn’t dream of being anywhere else," Thorne murmured, his lips barely parting from Noelle’s as he responded.
