Chapter 163: Mended soul

Chapter 163: Mended soul

I guide Mona and the baby carefully through the darkened paths of the palace, my senses on high alert. Each shadow feels like a threat, every distant sound making my heart pound faster, but I press on, dodging knights and guards who patrol the grounds. Once we reach a more secluded area near the palace walls, I signal to Callan, who is waiting just as we planned, his sharp eyes sweeping the area.

We don’t have much time. I glance around, ensuring the path is clear, and then give a low whistle. A tense moment passes, the air thick with anticipation. Then, with a rush of wind, Leona appears, her presence as fierce and commanding as ever. Just seconds later, Roman arrives, his eyes taking in the situation with calm efficiency.

I feel a swell of relief seeing them, our last line of defense, the ones who will keep my family safe. Gently, I hand the baby over to Roman, pressing a kiss to her soft forehead. She gazes up at me with wide, innocent eyes, and I’m overwhelmed by the depth of my emotions.

"Don’t worry," I whisper to her, my voice catching. "I’m going to get your dad back."

But the moment she leaves my arms and settles into Roman’s, her face crumples, and she lets out a loud, distressed wail. The sound cuts through me like a knife, and instinctively, I take her back, holding her close and murmuring soothing words until she quiets. Her tiny fingers clutch at my shirt, and the way she calms in my arms makes my chest ache.

Mona steps forward, opening her arms to take the baby. "I’ll hold her," she says, her voice small but determined. I nod, gently passing the little girl over, and Mona cradles her close, pressing kisses to her soft curls.

"They’ll take you somewhere safe," I assure Mona, running my hand gently through her hair. "I’ll be right behind you. I promise."

Mona’s eyes shine with tears, and she looks up at me, her voice trembling. "You’ll come with Noelle, right?" she asks, the hope in her question almost breaking me.

I force a smile, trying to make it steady, even though every fiber of my being is already aching to get back to Noelle. "Of course," I tell her. "There’s no way I’m leaving without him."

The baby looks up at me from Mona’s arms, her blue eyes twinkling in the evening light. She babbles something softly, her small voice almost soothing, and I smile despite the fear and the urgency tightening in my chest. It feels as if she’s comforting me.

I step back, my eyes lingering on them one last time. Leona and Roman will keep them safe; I trust them with my life. And just beyond the palace grounds, Raul waits, a formidable force. It would take an army to get past those three, and that knowledge gives me the resolve I need.

I turn away, my heart heavy but determined.

Thorne’s emotions surged like an unrelenting tidal wave as he made his way back into the banquet hall, each step driven by the storm that raged within his chest. Anger, relief, longing—feelings that had festered and grown unbearable over two years of separation—now roared to the surface, impossible to restrain. His heart beat wildly, his pulse thundering in his ears as he scanned the room, his vision zeroing in on one person, one beacon of hope: Noelle.

There he was, standing beside the king. The sight of Noelle made Thorne’s breath catch, the pain of their years apart searing through him.

Thorne moved forward with a singular purpose, his eyes locked on Noelle, his heart threatening to burst from his chest. The world around him blurred and faded into insignificance. Only Noelle mattered, and Thorne would not be stopped—he couldn’t be stopped. His hands balled into fists, his emotions churning hotter and more desperate with each step. How many nights had he dreamed of this moment? How many times had he feared he would never see Noelle again, never feel his warmth or hear his laugh?

Noelle’s eyes were searching the crowd, desperate and anxious, until they found Thorne’s. The relief that flooded Noelle’s gaze made Thorne’s heart shatter all over again, and for a moment, all he wanted to do was run to him, to hold him and promise he’d never leave again. Noelle made to move, to close the distance between them, but the king’s hand clamped down on his wrist, restraining him.

Fury exploded in Thorne’s veins, raw and merciless. Every ounce of protective instinct he possessed roared to life, the urge to tear that hand away from his beloved almost too much to bear. His strides quickened, his vision narrowing until the only thing he could see was Noelle struggling to break free. He didn’t care about the attention they were drawing, the whispers and shocked murmurs of the gathered nobles. Let them watch. Let them see. Nothing would stop him now.

With a surge of strength, Noelle yanked his wrist free, and the second he was released, he ran. He ran with everything he had, and Thorne opened his arms wide, ready to catch him. When Noelle crashed into him, it was as if every broken piece of Thorne’s soul was mended in an instant. He enveloped Noelle in a crushing embrace, his arms tightening around him like a lifeline, his body trembling with the overwhelming relief and love that flooded through him.

Noelle’s arms wrapped around him just as tightly, his grip fierce and desperate, as though he was afraid Thorne might vanish if he let go. Thorne buried his face in Noelle’s hair, his entire being quaking with the force of his emotions. Tears prickled at his eyes, but he held them back, too overcome by the feeling of finally having Noelle in his arms again.

He pressed a kiss to Noelle’s forehead, his lips brushing against his skin with a gentleness he hadn’t known he was capable of anymore. Noelle clung to him, his body pressed so close that Thorne could feel his racing heartbeat. Thorne’s hands shook as he threaded his fingers through Noelle’s hair, inhaling the scent he had missed more than anything: rain and vanilla, the scent that had haunted him every night they’d been apart.

"My beloved star," Thorne thought, his chest aching with so much love it hurt. My heart, my soul, my everything. He held Noelle tighter, his tears spilling over despite himself, streaking down his face as he tried to absorb every sensation, every moment. He had waited so long for this, longed for it so deeply that he thought he might never feel whole again. But now, Noelle was here, warm and solid and real, and for the first time in years, Thorne felt the unbearable weight of his grief lift.

Noelle whispered something against his shoulder, but Thorne didn’t catch it, too consumed by the sheer joy and relief that filled him. He pulled back just enough to look into Noelle’s eyes, his thumb brushing against his cheek as he marveled at the man who was his entire world.

Noelle, his beloved star, was home. And Thorne knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he would never let him go

again. They would have to kill him for that.
