Extra's POV: My Obsessive Villainous Fiancee Is The Game's Final Boss -
Chapter 293 293: Now You Burn
It had been a week since they'd been on the island.
Ren had taken the time to provide food, also charging up his bracers at the same time.
Lilith had quickly recovered, and Thorn was now used to his new and improved hand.
And now, the group stood before the barrier.
The translucent wall stretched endlessly in both directions, looking like a glassy membrane made of pale blue energy.
It rippled in rhythm, soft and deep, like a heartbeat muffled by water.
The translucent surface shimmered like glass brushed with fog, revealing only vague shapes and refracted glows beyond.
They stood in silence.
Zuzu stepped forward, her brows drawn together. Her hand hovered inches from the barrier as she closed her eyes.
"It's still there." She whispered. "The Heart. Right behind this. I can feel it. It's like... like standing next to a waterfall, but not water. A waterfall made of one of the creepiest things a Tidecaller can try to sense. Blood."
Elias exhaled and drew his sword.
"Well, let's see if it bleeds."
He swung, fire trailing behind the sword like a shooting star. The sword struck the barrier with a hiss, and the fire vanished. Just gone.
He stared at the blade. "Well. That's a new kind of problem."
"That's because you didn't put enough force." Thorn grinned. "Let me show you how it's done."
He stepped forward, his new bone arm shifting into a bladed whip with a low crack.
He lashed out, the whip whistling through the air. It hit the barrier, and bounced off, as if it had struck a rubber wall.
"Huh. No damage." He muttered. "Didn't even leave a mark."
"It's not about brute force." Ren said, stepping forward.
The others turned to look at him.
He raised his hands slowly, summoning Push resonance. The energy built in his palms, not in a burst but in a steady current. It rippled around him, smooth and even.
"You don't stab something like this. You slip through it."
He pressed his right hand to the barrier. The surface rippled slightly, rejecting him.
He narrowed his eyes and focused, letting his resonance bleed through the contact point, not like a blow, but like a needle.
He rotated the pressure, twisting the flow slowly.
The barrier hummed louder.
"Come on..." He muttered, sweat already beginning to bead on his forehead. "Let me in."
The others watched in tense silence.
Ren exhaled sharply and adjusted his stance, letting the force rotate wider, like a spiral boring inward. The energy resisted him like thick flesh. It pushed back.
But he pushed harder.
Inch by inch, he worked the energy into the wall, twisting the resonance in a circular motion. His breathing grew strained. Veins stood out on his arms. The hum turned into a low growl.
Zuzu flinched. "It doesn't want us getting through."
"Then it can learn to be disappointed." Ren snapped, eyes locked on the shimmering circle forming under his hand.
The barrier pulsed.
And then, like paper under pressure, it tore.
A circular opening appeared with a faint hiss, glowing at the edges. The air on the other side was cold. Not temperature cold, but wrong. Like a space with no memory of warmth.
Everyone stared.
Beyond the barrier was a realm of surreal darkness.
The sky was void black, and the ground nonexistent.
In the middle floated a massive, heart-like structure suspended in the air by glowing veins that anchored it to nothing. It pulsed, each beat echoing through their bones.
And circling it, three massive Leviathans.
Each was the size of a city block, their movements slow and steady. Their bodies shimmered like oil in water, too many eyes blinking across their surfaces.
Their fins left trails of iridescent energy in the air, and their aura pressed on the group like pressure from deep underwater.
Zuzu took a step back. "They're... enormous."
"And angry." Thorn added. "They… don't actually swim like fish. Is that weird?"
"They circle like jailors." Elias chuckled. "And from what we know of the Deep, there are weirder things in it."
"Fair."
Lilith stepped forward.
Her eyes were glowing.
Ren turned to her. "Lilith—"
"This is it." She said, her voice calm. "This is what you brought us here for."
She stepped into the hole.
The barrier rippled as she passed through, then stilled.
Elias followed. He tightened his grip on his sword. "I'll guard her."
Thorn laughed dryly. "Someone has to punch those things in the face."
Zuzu swallowed her fear and nodded. "We finish this."
Ren stared at their backs, then a smile curved on his face. And he stepped forward.
The moment he passed through, the barrier closed behind them.
There was no way back.
Only forward.
Only war.
A second later, the Heart pulsed.
The glow flared violently, and a wave of sound tore through the void. A deep, soul wrenching howl like a thousand voices screaming at once.
It struck them like a physical blow, and everyone staggered, clutching heads or knees.
Zuzu dropped to all fours. Elias dropped to one knee. Thorn growled through clenched teeth.
"What was that?!" Zuzu gasped.
Ren straightened, eyes fixed on the heart. "It knows we're here."
The Leviathans stirred.
Their circling ceased. Heads rose. Eyes, dozens of them, fixed on the intruders.
And then, with impossible coordination, all three rushed forward.
"Formation!" Ren shouted. "Stay close!"
But it was already too late.
Walls of light and energy surged from the void, slamming down between them. Transparent and glowing, they divided the team, flinging each into their own section of darkness.
Ren whirled. "Lilith!"
But she was gone from sight.
Ahead of him, the largest Leviathan descended.
It was massive. Even larger up close. Its form twisted unnaturally, its limbs shifting between fins, wings, and claws.
Its body stretched endlessly, swimming through space like a serpent. Its many eyes blinked at him in perfect unison.
Ren grit his teeth. "Guess it's you and me, then."
Elsewhere, Lilith rose.
She stood alone, surrounded by shimmering energy.
Her eyes snapped open.
"You made a mistake separating me."
She reached into the air behind her and with both hands, formed a sword, pulling it out of nothing.
The sword glowed, with bright blue fire of soul energy erupting from its hilts.
"Now you burn."
