Ren sat cross legged again, this time beneath the curve of a giant bone, his back against it. He was just a few paces away from his tent, in case Lilith woke up. This way, he won't be too far from her but would also have a backrest.

The faint blue glow from the barrier ahead spilled pale light across the cracked stone around him.

The others were asleep, even Elias now. Even the ocean was quiet and no sound emitted from beyond the barrier. For the first time since they'd escaped the maze, the island was still.

He knew what was coming. This peace was just the last breath before a plunge. Before the final destination.

So, he decided to perform an inventory check on all the power he had at his disposal. He needed to be aware of what he could bring to bear before they confronted the Deep.

And so, he went to his mental list.

Not the literal system screen from Unfettered Enhancement, but the internal catalog he kept by habit.

His first weapon was his Soulbinding. That was his core Gift. At least, until he'd unlocked enough of what his divine gift was hiding. But for now, his main weapon was the ability to bind and utilize powers through objects, fueled with soul energy.

It had taken years, but he was getting close to Rank 5. Not quite there yet, but close enough to taste. That kind of progress was practically unheard of for a normal human, but he definitely wasn't normal.

His Soulbinding gave him freedom, which was his family heirloom. It allowed him to cut through anything. Well, except for souls with no structure, just like the Deep had shown him.

Depending on if the Deep's heart also contained a soul with no structure, he had no way of knowing if Freedom would be useful in the battle. Until then, it would remain in his spatial pouch.

And that brought him to the second product of his Soulbinding. The spatial pouch. An inventory space that held far more than it should. It was an utility creation and it was serving its purpose, but it also had no place in the coming battle.

Then, there were his teleportation coins. He already knew he couldn't teleport in and out of the Deep. The Deep was like a self contained world, and that kind of teleportation would probably tear him apart.

But for this battle, maybe he could still use it. But then again, it depended on how things went in the battle.

Finally, there were his bracers. He'd avoided using them, saving them for this particular battle. The bracers had absorbed as much kinetic energy as it could and stored it like a battery.

Every blow he'd taken as they fought through the Deep's maze, he'd been absorbing it. And now, they were full.

He could unleash them in a single giant attack. His decision to save it might very well save them.

And this brought him to the next power, Tithecraft.

One thing he'd learned from using Tithecraft was that it was dangerous. Not to himself but to his money. He'd paid every bit of strength he'd gotten from it with his savings, and while it was worth it, it wasn't called a sacrifice for nothing.

A big gain was his body. While he'd already been enhanced by becoming immortal, the Tithecraft body switch had allowed him to enhance his body beyond that.

While he wasn't visibly changed, his speed and power had grown even more.

There was also his ability to control vines. That had grown too. It had started as simple root manipulation and now, he could grow and shape them rapidly without existing roots. Though, he still needed energy by absorbing coins for most of them.

As for the final switch to control animals, it was still too weak. He hadn't really used it. Especially since it was useless in a place with no sane animals, and no time to train them.

And his final major power was Resonance magic. His Push Resonance. One of his oldest, simplest tricks. Generate force from nothing and redirect it. He used it to move, attack, and stabilize himself in the air. When they'd faced the dragons, he'd even used it to fly.

Push resonance wasn't as powerful on its own if it wasn't given time for its loop to build. But acting as support for his other powers, it was deadly.

And his final asset was his new skill, Hypnosis. But he doubted it would be useful in the battle.

The skill wasn't reliable. It might not work. But maybe it could be a chance to neutralize a threat before it could move. It wouldn't work on the Deep itself. But maybe... maybe a guardian. Maybe a piece of it.

Still, it was one more card in his deck.

Ren breathed out slowly. The tension that had been building in his chest lessened slightly. It wasn't enough. But it was what he had.

A rustle from behind made him turn.

Lilith stirred.

He moved quickly and quietly, slipping into the tent and kneeling beside her. Her eyes were cracked open, pale and unfocused. Her skin was still too cold.

"You're awake." He said softly.

She blinked, then smiled faintly. "You're okay."

"Yes. I am." He said, voice catching slightly.

She tried to sit up but wasn't strong enough to support herself. He steadied her with both hands gently.

"No. Don't. Just rest."

She took a breath, her voice weak. "Where are we?"

"We're past the maze." He said. "This is the last island. That glow through the tent? That's the barrier. Behind it is the heart of the Deep."

Lilith closed her eyes briefly, then opened them again. "I failed."

Ren frowned. "What?"

"I was supposed to protect you." She whispered. "Instead, I got trapped. You had to carry me. I slowed everyone down."

"Stop." He said quickly. "Without you, we might not be here yet."

She shook her head slightly. "I should've been stronger."

Ren reached up and brushed a strand of hair from her forehead, his fingers trembling. "Lilith... don't say that."

She looked at him, eyes shining in the faint light. "You always carry us. All of us. And I couldn't even carry myself."

"You carried me through the worst of it, Lilith." He said, voice tightening. "You being here, just existing, is what kept me from falling apart."

She didn't respond.

He swallowed and glanced down at her hand. He gently took it.

"When you collapsed, I thought I lost you." He said. "I couldn't lose you too. I couldn't..."

Lilith squeezed his fingers. "But you didn't."

He smiled faintly, blinking hard. "No. I didn't."

"You stayed by my side?"

"Always." He said. "Even if the world fell apart. Especially then."

She exhaled softly, her shoulders relaxing. "Then I can rest. Just a little."

"Yeah." He said. "Just a little."

Her eyes closed again, but her breathing stayed steady. Her hand didn't let go of his.

Ren sat by her side. Outside, the barrier pulsed again, like the heartbeat of something vast and watching.

And Ren, tired as he was, never took his eyes off her face.
