Chapter 50: 48, Midwifery

After journeys by high-speed train and airplane, Lu Lin once again arrived at North Capital, the central city of Blue Star’s Northern Hemisphere.

The last time he was here was three years ago. In these three years, North Capital had changed tremendously. But Lu Lin hadn’t. If it weren’t for real-time satellite navigation, he still wouldn’t have been able to find the hotel he had booked. As for taking a taxi? Heh, Lu Lin was too frugal for that.

He sent a message to his mom and dad, informing them of his arrival in North Capital. He planned to visit North Capital University in the afternoon and promised to take plenty of photos and videos to share with them, so they could all enjoy the university’s scenery together when he returned to Saturn.

After a simple bowl of special fried sauce noodles downstairs at the hotel, Lu Lin started his journey.

North Capital University was founded in AD 1898, nearly three thousand years ago. As Lu Lin stepped onto the North Capital University campus, he immediately felt a profound sense of history. Thousands of years ago, a group of patriotic individuals with great ideals had established this university. In the succeeding years, North Capital University cultivated countless outstanding talents across various industries, including...

Lu Lin had once heard an interesting anecdote about North Capital University. It was said that a graduate had started a stall selling fresh pork, which eventually grew into a large-scale fresh produce chain. He didn’t know if the story was true or not but simply took it as an amusing tale.

Following his visitor’s guide, Lu Lin visited many famous scenic spots and locations in North Capital University, such as Unnamed Lake, Boya Tower, Central Pavilion, and Spoon Garden. In some ancient buildings specially protected by the Federal Environmental Protection Department, Lu Lin also saw depictions of how North Capital students studied a thousand years ago.

Thinking about it, it was quite pitiful. Students back then had to rely on their own memory, analysis, and calculation, wasting a great deal of time and energy. Now, United Federal Humans can receive a Human Biological Chip at birth, and these basic learning processes have been completely omitted. Plus, with the existence of Star Cores, even ordinary people possess IQs far surpassing the scholar tyrants of the past.

Lu Lin’s final destination was the West Gate of North Capital University, also a must-visit, internet-famous classic spot for countless visitors to North Capital.

As Lu Lin leisurely strolled to the West Gate, he saw a group of people arguing. There were men and women, young and old, all uniformly wearing red hats. At the front, a girl in a vest held a small flag, anxiously trying to persuade everyone to stop quarreling.

Lu Lin was all too familiar with such groups. Tourist groups, huh?

Ever since humans acquired an additional Star Core, scientists had, in the time since, discovered Blue Star’s secret. Infants born and raised on Blue Star were more likely to receive its blessing. During the Talent Awakening at age eighteen, students awakening on Blue Star had a success rate more than double the federation’s overall rate. This discovery led to an explosive growth in Blue Star’s population. Later, to control the numbers, the federation implemented strict population registration management systems.

And this, in turn, had given rise to a new profession: educational travel agencies.

Countless people with connections on Blue Star started businesses on various planets. They helped groups wanting to settle, immigrate, study, work, or even conceive on Blue Star, enabling them to stay by arranging travel opportunities.

Back then, Lu Lin himself had been "accidentally" discovered by Tongyuan Thirteen Middle School and recruited as a student while traveling with a tour group to North Capital. Because of this, the Lu family had spent nearly 1.5 million, plunging them into significant debt.

In hindsight, that investment was a pretty good deal.

As Lu Lin approached the crowd, he listened to the clamor and figured out what had happened. This year, due to another increase in the Awakening rate for Blue Star examinees, countless travel agencies had heavily promoted this fact. Many families with appropriately-aged students were enticed and wanted to bring their children to study on Blue Star. However, after their Interstellar Battleship landed, Blue Star suddenly introduced a new regulation: the conditions for immigrating to study were raised yet another level compared to before.

This infuriated the dozen or so families in the tour group. Having just arrived at North Capital University, they couldn’t contain their anger and began to question the tour agency.

Lu Lin shook his head. It was hard to say who was right in this situation. The tour group certainly hadn’t intentionally hidden the information. However, those "immigrant families" who had gritted their teeth and spent all their savings weren’t wrong either. In such matters, it was difficult to determine right from wrong. He turned to leave. Lu Lin planned to spend today resting and wandering around North Capital city; tomorrow, he had to get to the Starship Aviation Center in the North Capital Suburbs to return to Saturn.

But just then, amidst the arguing crowd, a pregnant woman suddenly cried out in pain and collapsed to the ground.

Not good! Her labor had started; it seemed the baby was about to be born soon!

The pregnant woman’s husband panicked. He shouted loudly, asking if there was a doctor, then knelt on the ground, anxiously watching his wife. The tour guide quickly called a nearby hospital. However, it was peak commute time. Given North Capital’s traffic conditions, even an electromagnetic suspension multifunctional ambulance would take at least half an hour to arrive.

Someone in the crowd stepped forward, claiming to be a doctor capable of delivering the baby. However, he suffered from Star Core exhaustion disorder. Without the Star Power Stabilization Equipment found in a hospital, he couldn’t perform the delivery unless a Star Core Warrior was willing to provide him with sufficient Star Power support.

The pregnant woman lay on the ground, groaning loudly in pain. With every passing minute, her life was in greater danger.

The pregnant woman’s husband knelt before the surrounding people. "Please," he begged, "I implore all of you, provide some Star Power for the doctor!"

"Is there any Star Core Warrior here?" he pleaded. "I beg you, please save my wife and child!"

The pregnant woman’s husband wept and cried out, kowtowing to the tourists in all directions, tears streaming down his face.

The doctor nearby kept explaining the difficulties of an out-of-hospital birth. There was no Sterile Operating Room, no Star Power Stabilization Equipment, no electromagnetic or Laser Scalpels, and no skilled nurses to assist. He would also be taking a great personal risk. If something went wrong, it would undoubtedly leave an unfavorable mark on his record.

Lu Lin had already walked some distance, but he stopped, unable to bear hearing the cries of the pregnant woman’s husband.

He was just a newly promoted Level 1 Star Core Warrior, and he wasn’t sure if the Star Power in his body was enough to support the doctor in delivering the baby. But he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.

Since that’s the case!

"I’ll do it!" Lu Lin declared loudly, raising his right hand as he moved into the crowd. "I’m a Level 1 Star Core Warrior. I don’t know if my Star Power can be of any help."

The doctor glanced at Lu Lin and nodded. "It should be barely enough."

The pregnant woman’s husband thanked Lu Lin profusely, though this was hardly the time for gratitude.

Everyone helped move the pregnant woman into an empty room. Once inside, only Lu Lin and the doctor remained.

Dr. Liu put on the sterile gloves he carried with him and began the procedure.

The pregnant woman cried out in pain, "AAH—!"

Across two lifetimes, Lu Lin had never encountered such a scene. Hearing the pregnant woman’s scream, his heart couldn’t help but shudder.

"Hang in there, ma’am! Your baby is very healthy," the doctor kept encouraging her. "You’ll be able to see your child soon."

Lu Lin had no time or energy to observe the baby; he had to ensure a continuous, smooth, and stable input of Star Power into Dr. Liu’s body.
