Chapter 283: Chapter 165 Chase to Kill_2

The woman’s gaze turned to the fire raging in front of Jin Ao and Jiang Shouzhong, a hint of hesitation flickering in her expression.

She asked the man in a soft voice, but he simply shook his head. Ultimately, the woman sighed lightly and did not insist. She settled close to her lover, clutching his cold hand firmly, their fingertips intertwined.

In the precarious cave, the pair huddled together.

A distance away, Jin Ao hesitated before shouting, unable to suppress his conscience, "Hey, you two come over here and warm up by the fire. You’ll likely freeze to death out there tonight."

The man’s face remained expressionless, offering no response.

However, upon hearing this, he subconsciously furrowed his brow.

The woman offered an apologetic smile, her expression politely declining.

Jin Ao grumbled discontentedly, "What’s with you, acting so hesitant, you big man? Even if you’re not afraid of dying, don’t drag your wife into it. What, you want her to be buried with you if you die?"

The man gripped the knife handle tighter, anger evident on his face.

But seeing the woman beside him with her pale, quivering lips, so fragile in the cold, he felt a sharp pain in his heart.

He hesitated, but did not lead her to Jin Ao’s fire. Instead, with a nod of his chin towards Jiang Shouzhong and his group, he whispered something to the woman.

The woman nodded, stood up gracefully, and approached Jiang Shouzhong and his companions, asking softly and nervously, "Excuse me, sir, may I borrow a fire starter from you?"

Compared to the ruggedly featured big man Jin Ao and the mysterious woman with the bamboo hat, Jiang Shouzhong and his companions seemed much safer.

A young girl, a little girl, and a handsome man.

They didn’t look like bad people at all.

Seeing this, Jin Ao was so frustrated he nearly jumped up to argue but was pulled back by the woman with the bamboo hat beside him. He resigned himself to his dissatisfaction and started gnawing on a piece of dried meat, muttering under his breath.

Jiang Shouzhong responded indifferently, "Take a few burning sticks to light it up."

"Thank you, thank you so much, sir."

The woman quickly bowed in thanks and picked a few half-burned sticks from the fire.

Midway back, she turned once more, bowing in gratitude towards Jin Ao before hurrying back to her lover’s side.

Jin Ao’s expression finally softened.

The woman carefully ignited the dry wood she had gathered earlier. The flames grew steadily, illuminating their spot and dispelling the chill.

Once the fire was stable, she sat down at ease to continue tending to her beloved.

"This is the second wild mandarin duck pair we’ve encountered," Yelü Miaomiao whispered to Jiang Shouzhong.

"What?" Jiang Shouzhong turned his head.

With twinkling eyes and a hint of gossip, Yelü Miaomiao asked, "That Long Family’s young miss and Wen Dong before, and now this pair, do you think there’s anything off about them? Could they be eloping?"

"With injuries like that, could there not be a problem?" Jiang Shouzhong said flatly, "As to whether they’re eloping, that’s none of our concern. My main worry is to safely see you out of Fengcheng Longsu."

Yelü Miaomiao pouted, "So you’re in a rush to send me off?"

The young girl felt unaccountably upset.

Jiang Shouzhong opened his mouth, then suddenly stared at the girl beside him with a strange expression.

"What? Don’t you want to leave? If you don’t wish to return to Yanrong, I won’t force you. Even if you want me to take responsibility for you, I won’t shirk it. We can just change your name and you can be my wife."

"Hah, keep dreaming," Yelü Miaomiao said hotly, her cheeks flushed as she whispered fiercely, "I’m the Princess of Yanrong, you’re not worthy of this princess."

She waved her little fist in the air.

Jiang Shouzhong chuckled, "So in the end, we will still become strangers after all."

The young girl was suddenly taken aback.

She silently watched the fire, drew her legs together, rested her chin on her knees, and her long hair fell lightly against her cheek, swinging gently as she muttered, "Yes, in the end, we will still be strangers."

Er Liang sat quietly beside Jiang Shouzhong, resting her chin on her little hands, lost in thought.

She missed Que’er.

Jiang Shouzhong looked tenderly at the melancholic Er Liang, patted her little head softly, and asked in a gentle voice, "Er Liang, would you like to hear a story?"

Er Liang was taken aback and nodded vigorously.

Yelü Miaomiao, who was also a bit sullen, perked up, moved closer, "Come on, tell it, you haven’t finished The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber from last time. What happened to Zhang Wuji after he fell off the cliff..."

Jiang Shouzhong smiled and began to tell the story to the two girls.

...

As the night wore on, the storm outside the cave gradually died down, leaving only the sound of dripping water, tapping against the quiet night.

After a day of exhausting travel, the two girls had fallen into a deep sleep.

Er Liang was nestled in Jiang Shouzhong’s lap, emitting soft, even breaths, her sleeping face under the light of the fire looking exquisitely beautiful, like a lily in its first bloom, pure and unblemished.

On her forehead now and then shimmered a white light, like a blooming flower from the other side.

Yelü Miaomiao had initially dozed off leaning on Jiang Shouzhong’s shoulder, and then she lay in his arms asleep. The sleeping girl looked peaceful, her long lashes casting a faint shadow on her cheek.

Even with her face disguised, the fresh and unsullied air about her could not be hidden; she was like a forest sprite.

The fire crackled softly, intermingling with the girls’ breathing.

Jiang Shouzhong had no desire to sleep and occasionally stoked the fire with a stick.

He looked over at Jin Ao’s side.

The woman with the bamboo hat had fallen asleep against the cave wall, covered with a thick man’s coat.

Jin Ao was sitting cross-legged in meditation.

As for the couple by the cave entrance, the man had his eyes closed, feigning sleep, his hand gripping the knife handle remaining tense at all times.

The woman leaned against the man’s shoulder, sleeping lightly. Her brows furrowed occasionally. Every now and then, she would open her eyes to check the fire. If the flames weakened, she would add some dry wood, her face full of worry and melancholy.
