Chapter 37: Chapter 37: He’s Like an Unwelcomed Child
"I..." Nuannuan just wanted to answer when a cold voice interrupted him: "No need to trouble yourself, brother. Nuannuan has her own plans. She’s already preparing to work at another company."
Wen Nuan turned back and saw Leng Yan looking at Leng Ye with no trace of the expected brotherly warmth. His attitude and tone made her worry that Leng Ye might find it embarrassing, so she instinctively glanced at Leng Ye.
Leng Ye didn’t seem affected at all. He still had a smile in his eyes, looking good-natured: "If Nuannuan isn’t doing well at another company, she can come to the Leng Family anytime."
"Thank you, brother."
Wen Nuan hurriedly said, wanting to say something else, but she felt a tug on her hand and bumped her head against the top of the car. Leng Yan was pulling her in, his voice uncharacteristically gentle: "Nuannuan, get in the car. The night wind is chilly, and aren’t you feeling unwell?"
"Goodbye, brother." Nuannuan felt a little embarrassed, rubbed her head where it hurt, and quickly got in.
She found it strange when she was at the Leng Family. She didn’t know if Leng Yan was naturally this cold and distant or if he and Leng Ye were fundamentally incompatible, their brotherly bond weak.
He was the same with Leng Siyan, having no father-son warmth at all. Leng Siyan’s gaze seemed to always rest on Leng Ye, as if he favored Leng Ye more than Leng Yan...
What is going on?
She was filled with doubts the entire way, wanting to ask Leng Yan but not daring to.
In Nuannuan’s eyes, Leng Yan was an unpredictable bomb, ready to explode and shatter her to pieces without warning.
The atmosphere remained cold throughout. Holding the gift, she returned to the room and looked at Leng Yan, who was as silent and frosty as ever. Wen Nuan bit her lip and tried to speak to him: "This gift from big brother looks quite unique. I wonder what’s inside?"
"Trash!"
The delicate gift box was suddenly snatched away by his large hand, his cold eyes filled with mockery.
Wen Nuan was still in shock when the exquisite gift box made an arc and was thrown out the window.
"Hey, Leng Yan—" Wen Nuan instinctively took a few quick steps towards the window, only to be blocked by his outstretched arm. His deep eyes seemed to smile: "He won’t marry you, and you’re upset over throwing away his stuff?"
"What do you mean?"
Wen Nuan was baffled: "What do I have to do with him? I’m obviously marrying you."
"Stop pretending."
Leng Yan closed the window with a bang, folding his arms as he looked at her with a half-smile: "Don’t tell me you know nothing about this marriage."
"I really know nothing about it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even know what you look like." The deep mockery in his eyes made her retort: "I know nothing about you, nothing about the Leng Family."
Leng Yan squinted his eyes. He somewhat believed her words.
She had even mistaken him for Leng Yan’s friend back then.
"You were supposed to marry Leng Ye, but he ran away, so your husband ended up being me." He took out a cigarette from his pocket but didn’t light it, just sniffed it beneath his nose, laughing self-mockingly: "All the good things he fights me for, only the unwanted ones are left for me."
His voice was extremely soft. At that moment, Wen Nuan clearly saw the loneliness on his face.
The proud him always showed off his brilliance to others, yet the expression he revealed now made her feel a pang of sympathy.
Like a pitiable child with no one to love, having their favorite things but never being able to get them, forever staring at the old toys others abandoned.
However, even though she felt sympathetic towards him now, it didn’t mean she agreed with his point of view.
"I’m not the thing you speak of, and, I find it easy to get along with big brother."
"You know someone’s face but not their heart!" Leng Yan growled mercilessly, appearing hurt, and sat down on the sofa, somewhat disheartened.
"What’s really going on? Can you tell me?"
Wen Nuan was startled by him. The pain in his eyes compelled her to speak. She sat down beside him, turning her face to look at him.
