Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Secret in the Room
"Ah?"
Nuannuan was taken aback by Pengfei’s words, and she turned her head abruptly, her body slightly trembling.
At the entrance of the villa, a stretch limousine was heading in their direction.
Who else could be in the driver’s seat if not Leng Yan!
Why was he here? Didn’t he say he wouldn’t come with her?
Wen Nuan’s mind was filled with question marks. She instinctively walked toward Leng Yan, wanting to ask for clarification. Just as she reached the car, the door was already open. He stretched his arm, wrapped it around her slender waist, smiled slightly, and called respectfully to Wen Qingyan, "Dad, I had some matters to handle, so I’m late."
He glanced at Pengfei and smiled warmly, "This must be Pengfei, right?"
"Brother-in-law," Pengfei called out happily, seeing his sister lovingly embraced by her brother-in-law, all previous worries vanished.
"Yan, Nuannuan just said there was an emergency at the company. We all thought you wouldn’t make it," Wen Qingyan said with a smile, feeling relieved.
Only Wen Nuan, being tightly held by him, attempted to push away, but a low voice pressed by her ear:
"If you want them to worry, go ahead and push me away."
Nuannuan remained silent.
He was right; she couldn’t push him away.
Just treat it as acting in a play. Look at those actors: don’t they perform crying, laughing, arguing, and silly in great detail?
She thought she should do the same. Act with him, play a loving couple, let her father be at ease in his old age, let Pengfei focus on his college entrance exam.
But, did he know she wished it wasn’t just a play? It would be so good if it were real...
Leng Yan took on the role of a new son-in-law well, accompanying Wen Qingyan for several drinks at the table and giving Pengfei gifts he brought back from abroad, occasionally picking dishes for Wen Nuan, saying she was too thin and needed to eat more.
The atmosphere was joyful; no one could see anything "fake" about it. Wen Nuan, with her head lowered while eating the dishes he picked, allowed a glimpse of bitterness to show.
Her face was almost stiff from smiling, thankfully the lunch ended, but Wen Qingyan’s suggestion made Wen Nuan tense once again.
"Yan, would you like to see Nuannuan’s room?" Wen Qingyan asked Leng Yan with a smile.
He hoped Leng Yan could learn more about his daughter, having spent a sleepless night worrying that his daughter might suffer grievances. With the son-in-law absent at the wedding, he feared Leng Yan was deliberately showing strength to Nuannuan. Leng Yan’s excellent performance during the meal dispelled many concerns, but he still feared Leng Yan did not truly love Nuannuan.
Everyone familiar with Nuannuan said she is a good girl. He hoped Leng Yan would think so too and would genuinely care for Nuannuan.
"Go to my room?"
Nuannuan was slightly stunned.
"Sure, I’d love to know more about Nuannuan’s past," Leng Yan said with a gentle smile, taking her hand before she could refuse.
"My room is messy; let me go tidy up first."
Nuannuan urgently pushed his hand away, attempting to rush upstairs before him. However, his long legs quickly caught up by the third step, wrapping his arm around her waist, a teasing and mocking voice whispered, "So nervous, is there a man hidden in the room?"
"What do you think?" Nuannuan retorted, her long nails digging slightly painfully into her palm.
"I think..." he chuckled deeply, his dark eyes profound, "there isn’t."
"Good you know," Nuannuan released her clenched fist, resigned to walking alongside him.
Just as she opened the door, she quickened her pace, striding swiftly to the dressing table, casually tidying her slightly messed hair from showing affection in front of her father and brother. Her fair fingers, however, discreetly pocketed a small item from the table.
"Cleaned up nicely, why say it’s messy? Don’t want me to come up?"
Leng Yan crossed his arms as he surveyed her room, not noticing her slight actions at all.
"I don’t like others entering my room," Wen Nuan smiled awkwardly, her fingers interlocked in her pocket, the cool crystal making her heart uneasy.
It was a charming bear pendant, made of blue crystal. Nuannuan loved Swarovski crystals, so she had some knowledge about the Shi Family’s products.
The one in her hand was a crystal bear phone charm from the Shi Family.
Although its crystal and craftsmanship were not as good as the Shi Family’s, it still looked beautiful.
The reason she kept it was because
——The true owner of this Crystal Bear was Leng Yan...
