Ex-Human Morphus [A Mutant Evolution Apocalypse LitRPG] -
Chapter 259
Chapter 259
Miller was pissed. He was pissed at his people for failing to prevent the disaster that had occurred at his base. He was pissed at Minh for escaping, making it seem as if he was responsible for what had happened, which led to misunderstandings, leaving him confused about the entire situation.
He was pissed at Skullface for seemingly being smarter than him, able to immediately grasp what had happened at his base. He was pissed at Dominic and Patrick, whom he had brutally tortured to death. Though they were dead now, it didn’t lessen their culpability. Their inability to protect the base during his absence had directly caused the disaster.
He blamed literally everyone around him for the situation he found himself in, except for himself. He was even pissed at Catalina, even though she had nothing to do with what had happened. He was pissed at her simply because she had been promoted to base leader, taking command of the base he had recently been in charge of.
Above all, he was pissed at the creature known as the morphus. That freak had somehow managed to infiltrate his base while he was away. Miller wasn’t surprised that it got past all the guards, though. In his opinion, they were just dumb, incompetent idiots. The mere fact that they allowed a worker named Johnny to steal a mana crystal from an ammo-producing machine right under their noses said it all.
However, the morphus had managed to avoid detection even by the base’s turrets, which were highly sensitive, designed to sense even the slightest movements. It then managed to sneak into HQ and kill every guard there, with the rest of the base’s occupants being none the wiser!
To make matters worse, the creature made the attack look like the work of a human intruder. And Minh, who had suddenly decided to escape the base, made himself the prime suspect, unwittingly playing right into the freak’s hands!
Miller ended up torturing Dominic and Patrick to death, trying to determine if they were in cahoots with Minh. As it turned out, they had nothing to do with it. When Skullface arrived at the base, he almost instantly figured out that it was actually not Minh but the morphus who had caused all that chaos.
Because of that mistake, which Miller blamed on his subordinates rather than himself, Skullface demoted him from a base leader to a regular soldier. It sucked, but at least he was offered a chance to redeem himself in his leader’s eyes. After stealing the Skeleton Key from his base—even though Catalina was now in charge, Miller refused to admit it and still thought of it as his base—the morphus entered the Maze of Torment, the dungeon located in the sewers beneath the city. So Skullface gave Miller an order to deal with the freak as soon as it got out of the dungeon. Miller was more than determined to make sure the morphus didn’t get away with what it had done at his base.
He and some of his people, whom Skullface had allowed him to take along, were now at the end of a corridor that culminated in a dead end. After descending into the sewers, they discovered that the door to the dungeon was open, confirming Skullface’s claim that the morphus had entered the dungeon.
They passed through the door, descended the stairs, and soon arrived at a dead end. Miller knew that access to the actual dungeon was possible only through a portal. This portal would reappear at the end of the corridor once the morphus was done inside and was permitted to exit. For now, all Miller and his team had to do was wait.
And they had been waiting for a while now. With each passing minute, Miller’s mood worsened. He was itching for a fight with the morphus, eager to make the creature pay for all the trouble it had caused. But the portal still hadn’t materialized, which was really getting on his nerves.
There was a chance the morphus had already completed the dungeon and left, but Miller wouldn’t accept that possibility. The creature had to still be there! It simply had to! Though he wasn’t a religious man and had never believed in God or anything like that, at that moment, he found himself praying for the morphus to still be in the dungeon. He was eager to take it on as soon as it returned to the outside world, ready to take his revenge for all the trouble the freak had caused.
Miller was aware that many groups that had encountered the morphus ended up dead. That creature was obviously very dangerous. For that reason, after Skullface ordered him to go to the dungeon entrance and wait for the morphus to show up, Miller took some time to talk to his people and gather all the information they had about his formidable opponent.
He learned that the morphus was fast, strong, and possessed several dangerous abilities. It could turn invisible, jump very high and far, and crawl along walls. Additionally, it could morph its hands into various weapons, like claws or swords.
Still, Miller was confident he could kill the morphus. Before making his way to the dungeon, he made sure not only to repair his power suit, which was damaged in the battle against the Death Knight during the attack on his base, but also upgraded it, making its armor more effective and adding a couple of new features and weapons.
Skullface was generous enough to share some rare resources so that Miller could repair and upgrade his mech suit in almost no time. Without that assistance, the repairs would have taken much longer. Skullface was still mad at him, so Miller figured that the only reason his boss gave him the rare resources was to make sure he fixed the suit quickly and reached the dungeon before the morphus left.
His two main weapons were an energy cannon attached to the suit’s left hand and a powerful chainsaw affixed to the suit’s right hand. Thanks to the recent upgrades he made to his suit, he now also had a couple more aces up his sleeve, which he couldn’t wait to test out on the morphus.
Knowing how many people the morphus had taken out in the past, Miller took numerous precautions before the upcoming fight with the creature. He learned everything he could about his opponent. He repaired and upgraded his power suit, also known as a mech suit or simply a mech.
He also strategically positioned his men to make sure the morphus didn’t escape. He was confident that once engaged in battle, the creature would realize it had no chance of winning and would attempt to flee. While his mech suit was incredibly powerful, it wasn’t very fast. If the morphus made a run for it, he wouldn’t be able to pursue the freak.
For that reason, Miller brought only a few of his men to the spot where the portal would materialize, leaving the rest of the team at the open dungeon door. If the morphus managed to slip from Miller’s grasp, the men positioned at the dungeon entrance should be able to prevent it from escaping and finish it off.
So he did everything in his power to make sure he won this fight. He knew exactly what to expect from the morphus and what it was capable of. As for the freak, it was in for a rude awakening. It remained unaware of the full capabilities of Miller’s mech suit, which would work to his advantage.
Furthermore, the creature had no clue about the welcoming party waiting at the dungeon entrance. As soon as the portal opened and the creature emerged, he and his team would attack the freak with everything they had, giving it no chance to comprehend what was happening. The element of surprise definitely worked to their advantage.
Miller hoped that after dealing with the morphus, Skullface would promote him again, reinstating him as the leader of his base. The idea of being just a soldier after having led an entire base was unbearable. He refused to let someone who had once been under his command boss him around, especially a woman. No freaking way.
So, if after killing the morphus, Skullface didn’t promote him back to base leader, he would have to kill Catalina because there was no way he was going to let a woman boss him around.
A few more minutes passed, but the portal still hadn’t materialized. He was really starting to lose his patience—and so were his people. He even had to bark at them to keep them in line and to make sure they kept their guard up.
He kept his gaze fixed on the blank wall at the end of the corridor where the portal should appear, aiming his powerful energy cannon at it. Once the portal opened and the morphus emerged, he would unleash a barrage of fire on the mutant.
But the portal still didn’t materialize. Miller was beginning to think that perhaps the morphus had already completed the dungeon and left. If that were the case, it would really suck balls.
Just as Miller was about to give up and accept that he might have arrived too late to catch the morphus, the portal suddenly ripped open.
