Chapter 999: Chapter 900: Endless Suffering, Enjoy the Moment_2
"The former leader once had a dream, which was to climb to the top of the corporate building and install a miniature tactical nuclear bomb there, then watch the explosion as if it were fireworks."
Rosali shrugged, "Someone has already done that for him. Firstly, someone blew up Tesla Tech’s building, and then others destroyed The First Region, the Second Region, and the Fourth Region, but what was the outcome? The United Government is still the United Government. As far as I know, the corporations and the Review Meeting haven’t changed at all."
Even the former leader hadn’t imagined someone could cause such massive destruction in the core cities of the United Government before he died.
"Now that we’re all friends here," Rosali mimicked Song Lan’s tone from earlier, "the Rebel Army is merely adding fuel to the inevitable change. We can’t do anything for those who refuse to change. So, we might as well introduce them to card games; everywhere can be friends through cards, and though the suffering is great, at least we can have fun in time."
"Nothingness" sat opposite Rosali, looking at the young woman’s beautiful face through the flickering firelight, and for a moment, he was under the illusion—he thought he saw two Song Lans.
This was clearly a conversation between two Song Lans!
This girl had yet to study with Song Lan, yet she had almost completely absorbed his way of thinking.
"You two would definitely have a lot to talk about."
He had no choice but to give up on the idea of becoming Rosali’s mentor.
Rosali smiled slightly, "Rest assured, we have never had plans to attack the United Government. The reason we gathered here is because we received a distress signal."
"A distress signal?"
"The United Government must have noticed it too. In the past decade, the number of Psychic Ability Users from ’outside’ has increased significantly. They have allocated quite a few research resources to the Covenant Nation, all to lure Psychic Ability Users to the United Government."
The people of the Covenant Nation are simply too easy to deceive.
Just by paying a sum to their families and painting a few appealing pictures, the children of ordinary families would eagerly head to the United Government.
Now, "Studying to earn money" has become quite a trend.
"We suspect this has something to do with ’Whisper.’ Every leader of the Rebel Army has more or less heard the ’Whisper’ suggesting that we come to the Oasis," she explained.
But ultimately, the Rebel Army is not a rigorous research institution, and they still don’t know where the ’Whisper’ comes from or what it’s calling them for.
Even what she had just mentioned was something they stumbled upon while sitting together in a recent Rebel Army meeting.
"If deities really exist and have granted us power, I’d actually like to meet them. By the way, do you know which Deity is mentioned the most in ’the outside’?"
"The God of Life?"
"Oh? You are quite sharp."
Rosali gave Song Lan a look of appreciation, "Right, the God of Life. Different indeed are the legends about Him that remain. Discoveries in ruins by the guilds are just one part. I think this is mostly due to the harsh living conditions ’outside.’"
She had once heard an argument that deities were created by humans.
Their image and powers respond to the expectations of their creators, and the people of the "outside," constantly battling harsh living conditions, deep in their hearts long for the blessings of the God of Life.
"What about you? Do you believe in it?"
Song Lan asked curiously.
"I believed when I was a child, but now I’m an atheist. Many miracles are probably the work of powerful Psychic Ability Users, which become deified as they are retold."
"Exactly."
This answer pleased him, and he nodded in satisfaction, "You must stick to what you believe now. There are no deities in this world, and you must take control of your own fate."
"...I feel like there’s a hidden message in your words."
Rosali yawned, stretched, and quickly put the matter behind her.
She didn’t like to trouble herself unnecessarily; whether deities existed or not was not for her to worry about—theists and atheists had been arguing for a century, and she didn’t want to be drawn into that battlefield.
Then, something on her finger caught her eye.
A crab the size of a palm, using its pincers to grip her index finger.
"Ah—!"
A few seconds of bewilderment later, the esteemed leader of the Rebel Army, with a bounty of 89 million by the United Government, let out a scream like a little girl.
In that moment, she completely forgot her Psychic Abilities, frantically shaking her arm back and forth several times before managing to fling the crab away.
Only after confirming that her finger wasn’t bleeding from the crab’s pinch did she, still shaken, pat her chest.
"Don’t be nervous, this is just a newly born Death God Crab hatchling, it means no harm."
Inheriting the will of a naturalist, Song Lan quickly said.
But his current state held no convincing power for Rosali at all.
"If it hurts, just shout out."
Rosali’s eyes were filled with apology as she reflexively flung the crab, which described a beautiful arc in mid-air, and, in an attempt to maintain its balance, clamped onto everything within its reach.
That included Song Lan’s nose.
"I’m sorry!"
She took Song Lan’s explanation as a form of self-comfort, or perhaps as a cover for her embarrassment from being pinched by the crab.
"It’s true."
Song Lan spread his hands to catch the falling young Death God Crab, "It just wanted to greet you earlier, it didn’t use any force."
"You can understand the language of Death God Crabs?"
Rosali did not activate her abilities, and the young Death God Crab’s body housed its own soul. Death God Crabs were usually a quiet species, only emitting deafening cries when fighting enemies.
She didn’t hear a sound from the Death God Crab, yet Song Lan had already grasped its intended message.
"That’s a long story, every naturalist learns the method of communicating with animals."
The "language" Song Lan spoke of was Spiritual Energy.
By connecting through Spiritual Energy and entering the mind of the mutated creature, one could understand its thoughts, "like this one, it’s here to seek help because its group is facing a great threat and wants your captain of the Death God Crab squad to return."
"What happened?"
Rosali leaned in, coming face to face with the small creature in Song Lan’s palm.
The young Death God Crab’s pincers continuously gestured toward her, and after half a minute had passed, she realized something.
She was not cut out to be a naturalist, likely never able to comprehend animals’ language in this lifetime.
Luckily, she now had someone to assist her from the sidelines, "What is it trying to say?"
"The Sage prophesied that a group of bad folks are targeting the Divine Artifact revered by their tribe, and should the Divine Artifact fall into enemy hands, the consequences would be dire. They might use the power of the Divine Artifact to bring disaster to the Oasis, we must stop them!"
Compared to the overly brief communication style during soul transformation, the language mastered by naturalists was much more convenient.
However, this brought about a new problem.
"Divine Artifact? What Divine Artifact?"
Rosali looked utterly bewildered; she had never heard of the Death God Crab clan holding any Divine Artifacts. They lived simple lives when not hunting, lurking in the depths of the desert, and once they dozed off, it would be for several days at a time, with over 80% of the clan members being homebodies.
Song Lan dutifully took on the role of translator, gently prodding the soft shell on the back of the young Death God Crab and asked, "She’s asking what Divine Artifact it is."
At this, the young Death God Crab once again gestured with its pincers at them.
This time, however, Song Lan did not translate.
Rosali noticed his expression turned slightly awkward, as if he had something to say but hesitated.
"What did it say?"
"Er, about that, it’s actually quite complicated..."
"’Frostmourne+15’? What is that?"
Before Song Lan could concoct a story, ’Nothingness’ blurted it out.
He, too, mimicked Song Lan’s method, trying to delve into the young Death God Crab’s mind.
And then he heard this bizarre thing.
He persistently asked, "Why would a bunch of crabs have something like this?"
