Chapter 996: Chapter 899: Man and Nature
A true master of deceit always remains calm and composed, never panicking over trivial matters.
Song Lan perfectly embodied the demeanor of a professional con artist.
However, Rosali had no immediate plans to switch from the Rebel Army to a telecommunication fraud group, so she declined Old Void’s goodwill, saying, "Since my identity has been revealed, I should head back now. If you’re interested, you are welcome to visit our encampment."
Leaving the Goldstone Casino, her plan was completely ruined.
Even though the Brotherhood might be slow, by now they definitely had increased their manpower and moved the archaeologist to a more secret location.
Recalling something, she added before leaving, "The archaeologist you are looking for might not have been coerced, but might have willingly gone to the Brotherhood’s territory."
.........
Meanwhile, the Brotherhood headquarters was in complete disarray.
News from Lute City was much delayed than usual, and when they sent someone to check, they discovered that both the Skull Gang and the "Garbage Disposal Plant" had been wiped out. A surviving member of the Skull Gang revealed that the killers of "Scarface" were two men dressed in suits, who seemed like private detectives.
It was a coincidental twist that these two "private detectives" had previously appeared at a Rebel Army rally, brazenly strutting around under their watch.
The Brotherhood had never been humiliated to this extent, not even during the initial massive crackdown could someone taunt them like this.
To the higher-ups’ surprise, the usually vindictive leader this time ordered them to hold their forces and refrain from causing trouble for a few days.
This made the excited higher-ups wonder if the leader had aged and become too lenient.
Once everyone had left, the room returned to silence, and the leader slammed his clenched right fist onto the table.
He was aware of his subordinates’ doubts, but the circumstances were different now.
He was no longer the decision maker.
In return, the other party promised him a new future.
After the dawn of the new era, the Brotherhood could still survive.
With this in mind, he walked toward the hidden door in the room, originally his private study, where all the crucial information about the Brotherhood was stored. Now, besides the documents, there was a new statue in the room.
"I know you are listening,"
the leader said in a low voice as he approached the statue, "The higher-ups are dissatisfied with my approach, and this isn’t the Brotherhood’s style."
"What is the Brotherhood’s style?"
A neutral voice emerged from the statue.
"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."
If it were the old Brotherhood, they would be issuing bounties now, digging three feet into the ground if necessary to find those two private detectives, instead of gathering people here for a pointless meeting. "This will make them think I am weak; it’s not a good sign."
He had ascended to his current position by wading through a sea of corpses. He believed that once the high command started to lose faith in him, assassination attempts would follow.
"Even if doing so leads to your destruction?"
"Destruction?"
The leader scoffed, "Don’t forget, this is Oasis. Here, no one can contend with the Brotherhood."
Neither the government troops of Oasis nor the United Government could.
During the treaty period, they had gradually consumed the nation bit by bit, leaving every corner of Oasis stamped with the Brotherhood’s mark.
The statue made no argument, and a projection was cast into this lightless room.
The projection was brief, yet it allowed the leader to witness the fall of the Brotherhood.
There were no bullets, no bodies strewn about.
In utter silence, the members of the Brotherhood and everything they had created dissolved into dust over time, scattering into the vast desert, merging indistinguishably with it.
"The Morger Family is the closest to your situation."
"I know them,"
the leader’s emotions cooled slightly.
The Morger Family had many dealings "outside" and had some business interactions with the Brotherhood. They were a truly ruthless family, whose style clashed completely with that of the United Government, maintaining the brutality and cunning of the barbaric ages to the present.
The Morger Family was also one of the few collaborators they could actually converse with.
But then one day, the leader saw in the newspaper that the Morger Family had been wiped out.
On the eve of their destruction, the Morger Family had amassed a large amount of military equipment and manpower, attempting to launch a large-scale war. But before the war could begin, all the high-ranking members of the Morger Family were assassinated, and the surviving minions were tricked by the Ragus Foundation, forced to leave the territories of the United Government.
The leader still remembered lying in bed that evening, unable to sleep for a long time.
A sense of empathy for their fate washed over him.
It was the fate of the Morger Family that convinced him to trust the future shown by the statue.
"Father God is merciful. He has promised to change your fate, provided you follow His will."
"Those two private detectives, who exactly are they?"
"They are enemies of Father God and the biggest stumbling block to the new era."
