Chapter 986: Chapter 894: The Villain Must Keep Up with the Times_2
He understood the feelings of the researcher.
Presenting products passionately to guests, only to face a lack of interest was tough, especially since his main occupation seemed to be in scientific research, not sales.
More likely, this poor soul was under his boss’s pressure and had to improvise to present products to a group of fierce Rebel Army officers to avoid getting fired.
That’s why Song Lan always said that workers should band together, or else they would be led by the nose by capitalists.
"I’m happy you asked that."
The researcher indeed showed a grateful expression, "The Brotherhood comes with sincerity, and hidden in the snacks we prepared for you is the secret of evolution. I assure you, the process will be completely unnoticeable, and you won’t even realize they are there."
Regrettably, his enthusiasm did not receive the appropriate response, and upon hearing that the snacks had been tampered with, the Rebel Army officers disdainfully pushed their plates aside.
The notorious Brotherhood had indeed tampered with the food again.
They controlled the largest human trafficking and fraud rings in the country, existing in the Oasis like a cancer. Could they honestly believe anyone would fall for this...
"Crunch—"
The sound of smacking lips changed.
"Nothingness" stiffened in his actions, realizing that everyone’s gaze had converged on him, making the snack in his hand suddenly unappealing.
Oh, to be precise, it had never been appealing.
That day, he realized that even gazes could be hurtful.
In the midst of silence, he wiped the corners of his mouth, put the half-eaten snack back on the plate, and like the others, pushed his plate aside.
But in fact, this was his second plate of snacks.
Song Lan said he didn’t want his portion, so "Nothingness" took it to pass the time.
The silence became especially prolonged this time.
Everyone except Song Lan moved their seats away from him, including William and the guest stars from the "Dead Man’s Lottery" show.
Everyone was waiting.
A few minutes passed before they realized that "Nothingness" showed no signs of mutation, and someone finally brought up the real purpose of their gathering today.
"Where is the survivor of that archaeological team?"
These days, everyone’s time was precious, especially the Rebel Army.
They were constantly busy overthrowing the Covenant Nation’s regime, liberating the "outside world" from the control of the United Government, and returning the land to the people; they had no time to sit here and listen to an "Evolution Pyramid Scheme Lecture" all afternoon.
Only Song Lan, who was on vacation, kept an open and receptive attitude.
Whether it was the lecture or the whereabouts of the archaeologists, he was eager to listen.
But before that, he symbolically asked "Nothingness," "You don’t have a stomachache, do you?"
"No."
After the recent bout of staring, the voice of "Nothingness" had considerably weakened.
No form of Parasitic Worms could affect him. Any substance inside the snack would be purified and assimilated by Spiritual Energy when consumed, but what truly tormented him was the pitying looks from the Rebel Army officers—he, a being from a higher world, had never suffered such a disgrace!
If someone hadn’t mentioned the missing archaeologist, he would have stormed out by now, heading back to the lodge provided by the Brotherhood to devour two large bowls of braised beef noodles!
But Song Lan’s cooking was genuinely delicious, no wonder their old friend ignored his own power and clung to him all the time.
"That’s good, be careful with what you eat when you’re out," Song Lan advised.
"Hmm." "Nothingness" nodded, "Nothing tastes as good as what you make."
"Please, everyone, be patient. The person you’re looking for is all right now, the Brotherhood has granted her the highest standard of treatment."
The researcher’s pleading gaze passed through the crowd and lingered on Song Lan.
Although it was their first meeting, he always felt that Song Lan was someone reliable.
And Song Lan didn’t betray his trust, suggesting with his eyes the discussion of the archaeologist first, and the Parasitic Worms and evolution could be saved for a detailed discussion in a smaller group after the meeting concluded.
Meanwhile, he also pointed at the clueless "mouse."
Mr. "Mouse" was particularly interested in these topics.
Gaining strength and comfort from Song Lan’s concern, the researcher steadied himself and gestured for the staff to open the projector in the meeting room.
The projection displayed a temple shrouded in greenery.
The commotion in the conference room ceased,, and everyone stared at the screen, where the person they had been thinking of was now kneeling among the foliage, hands pressed together in prayer before a statue.
Amid the branches, fluorescent lights danced, cleansing the restless hearts of those watching.
Time ticked by, and they watched as the woman in the projection completed her prayer ritual.
No one spoke during this time, as if any noise would desecrate the purity of the ceremony.
The archaeologist was still alive.
This resolved at least one of their worries.
The background in the projection wasn’t a bloody operating room; she wasn’t bound to an operating table, nor was she held hostage to compel them to ingest the "snack" prepared by the Brotherhood.
Indeed, the Brotherhood had not mistreated her, treating her as an honored guest.
"The High Priest has heard of your situation,, she believes now is not the time to meet,"
the researcher conveyed the message from the High Priest, "but don’t worry, destiny will bring you together, just as you are now gathered in Lira."
The atmosphere had indeed changed.
Song Lan felt a similar sensation.
The projection brought peace and tranquility to the entire conference room, and the researcher’s tone, no longer fervent, now resembled the prayers of clergy.
With the completion of the prayer, the projection ended as well.
The Rebel Army’s officers had obtained firsthand information, and so had no intention of staying any longer on the Brotherhood’s territory.
Even though both were wanted by the United Government,, a hierarchy still existed.
The Brotherhood wouldn’t spread the seeds of change anywhere; they were merely a criminal gang formed by atrociously violent criminals.
When the day of change finally arrived,, they would also eradicate the Brotherhood, the greatest malignancy of the Oasis.
Song Lan didn’t go with the flow; once everyone had left, he moved to the front row, and inquired about the new abilities of the worms.
The Devourers had also hatched many worm creatures, and now the meeting moved to a phase of academic exchange.
The researcher had prepared many details regarding the worms and evolution, but due to the aggressive stance of the Rebel Army’s officers hadn’t managed to speak, while with Song Lan, he could freely share his extensive knowledge.
Song Lan learned that beyond evolution and enhancement,,, the most important role of these worms was to establish consciousness connections.
The Brotherhood considered this a step further than the past Devourer projects, with the entire inspiration for the Devourer project coming from mechanical consciousness.
Connecting individual consciousnesses in some way greatly enhances communication and work efficiency, and gives them a rate of evolution and development far surpassing others.
"Heh."
To the researcher’s grand vision,, Nothingness merely scoffed.
He could only say these humans were far too young and idealistic.
Consciousness connections enhance communication efficiency and rate of evolution?
Nothingness didn’t want to explain too much; he could only say that one day, if they brought a troublemaker like Song Lan into this "group chat", they would realize how ridiculously wrong their theories were.
His numerous experiments and observations had shown that the spread of idleness was much faster than any theory.
If your consciousness connection included a Song Lan,, eventually everyone would turn into Song Lan.
These were lessons learned through the blood and tears of those with experience.
"Let’s go, it’s time for us to return,"
said Nothingness, as Song Lan and the researcher exchanged contact information for further communication,, merely snorting in his heart.
The enthusiastic researcher seemed completely unaware that he had fallen into an irreversible abyss.
Now, for Nothingness, only one thing mattered.
He was going back to the residence provided by the chamber of commerce,
to boastfully devour two big bowls of braised beef noodles.
