Chapter 984: 893 Chapter: The Child Has Grown Up_2
"You’re not the ’Orthopedic Surgeon’."
After the hovercar door opened, a man with a green scarf covering half of his face and carrying a gun stepped out toward them, his eyes full of wariness.
This was the car of the head of the Garbage Disposal Plant, yet the person descending from it wasn’t him.
"I am a cardiovascular surgeon."
Song Lan took the initiative to greet the other party. Seeing his friendly and familiar demeanor, members of the Brotherhood began to murmur doubts among themselves.
But, a cardiovascular surgeon?
Was there such a person in the organization?
"Where is the ’Orthopedic Surgeon’? Where has he gone?"
"He was unable to attend the meeting due to health reasons, so he asked me to attend in his stead."
"And them?"
"They are members of the film crew for ’Dead Man’s Lottery.’ The director wanted them to come and see the world."
Director?
What was this strange title?
The Brotherhood members looked at each other, they had never heard of anyone under the "Orthopedic Surgeon" referring to him as director.
However, they had heard of the ’Dead Man’s Lottery’ crew; they were the darlings of the "Orthopedic Surgeon," recently discovered amongst a pile of waste awaiting processing at the Garbage Disposal Plant. As the ’Dead Man’s Lottery’ show exploded in popularity in Oasis, even the Lira headquarters boasted many followers of this program.
The number of deaths mentioned in each day’s program brought strength to them, making them feel, tangibly, that the Brotherhood was the true ruler of the country.
"We must report this to our superiors."
"There’s no need."
Another uninvited guest interrupted the conversation.
With the arrival of a few individuals, the atmosphere on the scene grew even tenser. William struggled to contain his urge, wanting several times to direct his camera toward the legendary figures approaching them.
"Rat."
Number two in the Esinvig Army, it was rumored this very Rebel Army meeting was orchestrated by the "Rat."
Now, the bounty on this legendary figure, who had come from District Seventeen, had skyrocketed to 62 million watts.
Compared to his time in District Seventeen, "Rat" seemed much more mature and composed, and his wide Esinvig Army uniform made him look every bit the part of a monumental villain.
Song Lan watched with satisfaction.
The scene before him strangely gave him the illusion of a child, whom he had raised from nothing to something, finally making something of themselves.
The silver-haired woman walking behind him had also changed noticeably since their meeting in prison.
Her beautiful face was not covered by any confining hood. Her waist-length silver hair fluttered with the breeze, and her arrival seemed to drop the temperature in the back alley abruptly, the previously gentle wind now carrying a biting chill.
"Aishi, this is real, a living person!"
One of the ’Dead Man’s Lottery’ crew members was about to bulge his eyes out, muttering to himself incessantly.
In his luggage was a life-sized Aishi body pillow he had bought for 750 watts, a sold-out edition, whose black market price had already soared above 10,000 watts.
The main reason it sold out was because the manufacturer of the body pillow had been put away for "reactionary" and "spreading harmful thoughts," among other charges. With this precedent, it was estimated that no manufacturer would dare produce body pillows themed around the Rebel Army for the next decade or so.
As a die-hard fan of Aishi, he even brought his body pillow to Oasis!
After the successful jailbreak from District Seventeen and the withdrawal of the fourteenth Neutral Country from the Covenant Nation, the bounty on Aishi had naturally soared as well to 51 million watts. The list of her crimes now featured "overthrowing the government," a charge reserved for the most wanted criminals of the highest order.
However, the self-disciplined Song Lan was not distracted by Aishi’s beauty; he immediately noticed something different about her—she was not wearing the uniform, but instead a leather top and skirt with silver-white as the dominant color.
That made her stand out in the group, just like a middle school student showing up to school without wearing a uniform!
Additionally, those over-the-knee boots had attracted the attention of everyone, including the staff of "Dead Man’s Lottery," with William among them.
Song Lan felt that Lu Xiang’s worries were not unfounded, as the true dangers of Oasis became evident upon arriving in Lira.
A female officer of the Rebel Army appeared!
What was more frightening was that after noticing his presence, Aishi deliberately threw him a coquettish glance.
If Old Lu found out about this exchange of glances, the punishment would likely start at a minimum of one hour.
The coquettish glance seemed to have an area effect; Song Lan, being the gentleman he was, remained unmoved, but Aishi’s fans in the crew looked like they were about to melt.
Fortunately, at this critical juncture, "Rat" stepped forward and spoke to the members of the Brotherhood, "I know them; I’m going in with them."
Seeing as a VIP had spoken, the Brotherhood members made way for them.
"Rat" found an opportunity to come beside Song Lan and walked shoulder to shoulder with him, whispering in a voice that only they could hear, "How is Director Lu doing?"
He recognized Song Lan.
Although he didn’t know much about this chief of the Propaganda Department of the Law Enforcers, intuition told "Rat" that Song Lan was no simple character. They shared many commonalities—where there was danger, there they would be found, and like him, Song Lan had also survived countless perils unscathed.
This made "Rat" suspect that Song Lan might have experienced the same "miracles" as him.
That kind of energy closely associated with the Void in the eyes of others.
If his guess was correct, then Lu Xiang was clearly the real mastermind behind the scenes.
The apparent director of the Law Enforcers was actually the true controller of the Void!
His efforts had already borne fruit. Wherever the Esinvig Army went, "Rat" would vigorously publicize Lu Xiang’s acts as the director of Law Enforcers, enlightening the clueless residents to the true nature of Lu Xiang, the Great Demon King—an unprecedented tyrant that humanity had faced.
"Director Lu is doing well, no need for concern."
"That’s good, that’s good."
"Rat" concealed his ulterior motives.
Another benefit of broadcasting Lu Xiang’s deeds was that his own glorious feat of escaping from Section 17 had also been widely spread. Rebel Army officers were astonished at how he managed to rescue Aishi from the hands of this tyrant. The experiences they had could only be described as legendary.
During the conversation, the group followed the Brotherhood’s directions upwards, arriving at the floor where the meeting was being held.
"Oasis Peace Company."
This was one of the industries under the Brotherhood, ostensibly a real estate company, but its real function was to forge good relations with officials to access firsthand information constantly.
Even the call for help to the United Government was made under the benefits of the Brotherhood.
The lack of response to the call for help confirmed their guess—the United Government was overwhelmed and at its last gasp, no longer having the will or energy to maintain "world peace."
When they entered, most of the guests had already arrived, all were hardened characters only seen on wanted posters in the agency, and Song Lan roughly estimated that wanted criminals with a bounty less than eight figures simply didn’t dare enter this venue.
Seeing "Rat" in his prime, other Rebel Army officers nodded to him as a gesture of respect.
Apart from the room filled with wanted criminals, there was also an incongruent scene at the front.
A bare-chested man was locked in a cage with iron chains, and a black mask obscured his features. The man was burly, probably towering over 2.5 meters, and the cramped space of the cage forced him to curl up.
Song Lan noticed that what truly restricted the man’s movements was not the cage or the chains, but the syringes piercing his body.
There were seven syringes in total, slowly infusing an unknown dark-colored liquid into his body.
"Be careful, everyone."
"Rat" was the last to arrive, and after everyone was seated, a Brotherhood researcher in a white coat began the presentation, "Some have heard about this meeting and want to disrupt this grand event."
With that, the researcher approached the edge of the cage and revealed the man’s identity, "A lackey of the Barrosa Group, they’ve already infiltrated Lira."
