Chapter 973: Chapter 888: Ace Partner_2

"Now that you mention it, I just remembered. After going to the gun shop, we’ll head to the merchants’ clothing store to buy two suits."

............

Meanwhile, at the Cloud String Inn.

The cleaner, pushing her cart, reached the door of a room at the end of the hallway. Painful groans intermittently issued from the tightly shut room, but she was long used to it. Only after the knocking inside ceased did she knock on the door.

The "merchandise" had been transported early that morning from a station outside Lute City, and the staff of the Cloud String Inn were no strangers to such shipments.

A moment later, the door to the room opened to a man with a fierce look and two prominent scars on his face.

"The bathroom, clean it up."

The air was thick with the mingled stench of smoke and blood.

In the living room of the suite, the gang’s leader passed a black suitcase to a middle-aged man.

If Song Lan were here, he would recognize the middle-aged man as the one from the bus who had talked at length and offered him a bottle of mineral water with the cap already twisted off.

The man was a regular at the Cloud String Inn and one of the Skull Gang’s important partners.

Out of the "merchandise" delivered to the inn, nearly a third came from them, and the price of today’s batch was much higher than that of the usual "goods."

Being high-end merchandise from the United Government – tender-skinned city folk – the pervasive scent of blood in the room indicated the Skull Gang members couldn’t wait to inspect their goods.

It was a tradition of the Skull Gang to despise those from the United Government, and anyone from the United Government who knew even a little about Lute City wouldn’t fantasize about making a fortune in this city.

The cleaner stopped her cart in front of the bathroom door, pushed it open, and saw an obese man lying in a pool of blood. He seemed to have just passed out, his body still twitching unconsciously.

The wounds were concentrated on his knees; judging by their condition, the leg would likely be crippled. Next to the obese man were a group of men stripped to the waist, all covered in bruises, shivering in terror after witnessing what had befallen the man, hardly daring to breathe.

Half an hour earlier, the Skull Gang had already dispatched the first batch of sorted goods; the rest were considered unworthy – at least in the gang’s eyes. The man collapsed on the floor had unfortunately been used to make an example.

The cleaner slowly took out basic first-aid tools from her cart and said in a low voice, "Don’t make a sound, and don’t even think about going back. It will be easier this way."

She skillfully tended to Fatso’s wounds. Although she knew what she said was a lie, the most she could do was offer a sliver of comfort to these unfortunate souls.

Whether they came willingly or were trafficked, nothing could change the fate that awaited them.

"Useless ones" was what the Skull Gang labeled inferior goods.

Without a useful skill and disobedient, it was likely that within a few days, their organs would be auctioned on the black market of Oasis.

After tending to the wounds, she proceeded to clean the blood from the floor.

This was her daily job. Initially, the sight in the victims’ eyes tormented her, but she had long since become numb to it.

They were doomed never to see each other again.

"Bang—!"

A dull thump from the living room made the cleaner pause, followed by a burst of painful howls and curses.

"Scarface, have you lost your mind!"

This sudden turn of events made the cleaner’s heart race; the knocking outside the bathroom continued, with the cursing quickly turning to pleas for mercy. This was her first encounter with a dispute between the human traffickers and the Skull Gang members during her time at the Cloud String Inn.

"Do your work and stop looking around!"

The force from behind sent her tumbling to the ground, her pants and hands smeared with blood from the floor.

The Skull Gang member guarding the door kicked her, snarling, "Are you tired of living?"

...

The commotion in the living room continued, and the cleaner hurriedly wiped the blood off the floor while still hearing the ruthless voice of the Skull Gang leader, "I’ve made myself perfectly clear, but it seems the ’merchandise’ you’ve brought me doesn’t include the one I specified."

"That, that kid is too cunning. But don’t worry, he was shot while escaping. My men are on his trail, he won’t be able to...ah!"

Another scream followed.

Even without looking, the cleaner could guess what was happening in the living room.

The trafficker’s arm was being held down on a table by a Skull Gang member so the boss could smash his hand bones with a hammer.

"We want him alive, alive! If that kid dies..."

"Boss!"

The sound of the door being pushed open interrupted the threat, and a flustered inn staffer barged in, "There are two suspicious characters at the inn, they’re asking around about that archaeologist!"

Scarface took a deep breath, calming his emotions.

After a while, he lowered his voice and said, "Tonight, if you still can’t bring him here by tonight, go report to the Garbage Disposal Plant."

With that, Scarface signaled to his underlings to keep an eye on the person in the room and followed the inn staffer downstairs.

The two suspicious figures mentioned by the staff were very conspicuous.

Being dressed in suits was not common in Lute City, especially not in this district.

Because this was Skull Gang territory, people in suits subconsciously reminded others of the corporate men from United Government.

In Lute City, nobody wanted to mess with the Skull Gang.

When Scarface saw the two men, they were sitting opposite a guest, inquiring about something.

The guest noticed Scarface’s arrival, immediately got up feeling guilty, and without even a word of farewell, rushed out of the inn.

He then took the guest’s seat, sitting across from the two men.

"I hear you’re asking about the whereabouts of an archaeologist?"

"Yes, have you seen her?"

Song Lan was overjoyed and asked, "Someone saw her come here."

"Might have seen her, depending on who you are."

Scarface said ambiguously, "Are you private detectives, sent by the merchant association?"

The high-risk profession of private detective was rare in Lute City, as a border city of Oasis, power was fragmented, and those who liked to snoop around secrets often died the quickest.

"No, we’re her friends, she has been missing for several days, and her family is very concerned about her."

"Ha, friends."

Scarface gave a meaningful glance to the inn’s staffer, who immediately understood and walked towards the reception desk, "I hate dishonesty..."

"Bang—!"

A gunshot was Scarface’s response.

The gunshot, so close at hand, held him frozen for a moment; it wasn’t until a while later that the searing pain in his knee made him buckle and clutch the wound tightly.

Just now, someone had shot him in the knee on Skull Gang territory!

But what shocked Scarface even more followed.

"Are you insane!"

The young man he had been talking to stood up abruptly, angrily rebuking his own partner, "What are you doing shooting him?!"

At the sound of the gunshot, Song Lan felt his blood pressure skyrocket.

It was like being intensely focused on carefully considering his lines in a scene when without warning, his teammate rushed up and stabbed an NPC, forcing both sides into combat mode!

"He’s not a good guy!"

"I know, didn’t you see I was trying to resolve the issue peacefully through negotiation?"

Scarface’s eyes widened.

He opened his mouth but couldn’t say a word.

In this situation, he should have dropped a cruel remark, snarling to the two men that they were dead and that he would ensure their deaths would be long and painful, but as the two argued, he was stunned to find himself unable to get a word in.

"Don’t panic, I’ve already thought of a solution."

"You’re just an assistant, this isn’t for you to worry about."

"Take a look at this first."

Nothingness, in front of Song Lan and Scarface, took a pen from his suit pocket.

Before Scarface could react, the other man pressed his head onto the table, and he felt the pen’s tip touch his ear, hovering near his eardrum.

Nothingness cleared his throat and asked, "I’ll ask you once again, have you seen an archaeologist, female, under 30 years old, with long wavy hair? You have only one chance to answer, otherwise, you should know what I’ll do with this pen."
