Chapter 970: Chapter 887: Survivor

"A few months ago, a caravan discovered a relic in the desert area 200 kilometers away from the Oasis, and they brought this news back to Lute City. They believed they could make a big profit from this opportunity, so they applied for support from the caravan,"

"Nothingness" spoke up.

The wealthy of the United Government were very fond of collecting vintage treasures, which mainly came from the most inhospitable areas in the "outside world."

Some relics that had luckily survived the Third War contained a vast amount of objects recording the civilization before the war. Selling these objects to the United Government could earn a tremendous profit.

"The local chamber of commerce in Lute took notice and immediately assembled a team, dispatching a 15-person archaeological squad. Aside from security personnel, the squad also invited several scholars."

Given the special location of the relic and the potential existence of dangerous mutated creatures nearby, the Lute chamber of commerce also called in robots, hovercraft, and other mechanical equipment from their headquarters to assist them in this operation.

"The operation started off very smoothly. The life signal detector allowed them to avoid a large number of mutated creatures. When they ventured deeper into the relic, they found signs of biological habitation, and geologists estimated that the relic was very likely a bomb shelter. During the Third War, survivors who had entered the bomb shelter got through the nuclear war but eventually died due to exhaustion of supplies as the explosion destroyed their way in,"

"Nothingness" found a booklet from somewhere and started reading it in a serious manner.

In the end, only one member of the archaeological squad returned to Lute City, and all of the content above was recounted by this survivor.

The text detailed their wondrous six-day adventure deep within the relic.

"When the squad set up their equipment and embarked on the first round of exploration, their discoveries overturned the geologists’ initial conjectures. Among the ruins, they found that the place resembled a ceremonial site full of religious significance. The images carved into the rock walls depicted a certain mythical story. They had originally filmed a lot of footage inside the relic, but it was lost in a subsequent misfortune."

"They saw the sky ablaze, a meteorite falling from the sky and landing deep in the desert. The meteorite was discovered by the inhabitants of a village not recorded anywhere and was brought back to their village... How does it sound, does this story ring a bell?"

The archaeological squad didn’t understand the story at first, but the burning sky evoked unpleasant memories for "Nothingness," making it easy for him to link the sky and meteorite with the legendary tale.

Song Lan had cleared the upper world, and according to him, it was now uninhabited.

So, where had the people who survived that turbulence gone?

"Nothingness" echoed that the Oasis was precisely the place Song Lan had mentioned to him; he had claimed he would hold an unprecedented competition there. The meteorite’s landing spot was located in the desert not far from Lute City.

And everything recorded in this legend pointed toward another old friend they knew well.

Seeing Song Lan silent, "Nothingness" continued with the story, "It was a barren village. The villagers struggled for survival amidst drought, disease, and the threat of mutated creatures. As the village was off the trade routes of the alliances, no caravan ever passed through their settlement. Ever since the Third War, they had lived in isolation from the world, until one villager brought back to the village this peculiar stone."

"Under the influence of the meteorite, lush vegetation appeared in the village. When people placed the stone on the altar, its power gave birth to a stream that eventually formed a lake. It acted like an invisible barrier, keeping dangerous mutated creatures at bay. Even more miraculous was when some seriously ill patients prayed to the meteorite, it responded to them."

"Soon, people discovered its real power, the creation of life."

The narration by "Nothingness" came to an abrupt halt.

He knew this would be the part that piqued Song Lan’s interest the most and might help him remember something, "What has lost life cannot come back, no matter if it’s humans or us. And the only one who could change that... is you. I know you. You’re a hardcore terrorist but also someone who repays kindness."

This was also why he was still able to stand here and discuss a mythical story with Song Lan, "You would never lay a hand on those who have helped you."

That said, in this myth, their old friend didn’t seem to be in good condition at all.

If she still had consciousness left, she wouldn’t stay in a village and be worshipped, creating forests and lakes for them.

From these descriptions, "Nothingness" felt that the stone only recorded the abilities of their old friend, while her consciousness might have been sealed away during the fall.

As for the rest of the story, there wasn’t much that caught "Nothingness"’s attention.

In his view, humans have always been the same.

No one could endure the thirst for power and authority.

"Some believed this was proof that they were the chosen people of the God of Life, and the meteorite was a gift from the Deity. In its name, they established the Church, and the relic was a product of the Church’s existence. The Church thought that to prevent the misuse of the meteorite’s power, it should be kept safe by the most loyal believers."
