Chapter 88: Chapter 88: Historic Meeting_1

At 22:30 hours, a power cut descended on all the floors of the hotel.

Caught off guard by the sudden outage, the security personnel were momentarily unprepared, this sudden occurrence also ignited fear amongst the senators. Before this, they’d heard rumors of an assassin infiltrating the hotel, and the power cut felt like a cue indicating the killer was about to strike.

Those who became senators in District Seventeen managed to achieve their positions only by outshining many contenders. Thus, it wasn’t for them to ruminate on the reasons they could be assassinated.

Overhearing this fervor, Song Lan went outside to reassure everyone, convincing them that no one would go to such great lengths to assassinate them. They were overthinking their importance.

However, regardless of his reassurance, the chaos unleashed by the rumors ended up consuming a massive amount of personnel. It wasn’t until three patrol teams had been stationed on each floor, that the senators felt secure enough to retire to their rooms. The faint of heart went even further by calling security officers in to guard them within the confines of their rooms, just in case the assassin managed to breach their personal space.

Under such strained circumstances, Captain Doug managed to tally the number of senators in his head within fifteen minutes.

All were accounted for, except the Mayor of Lyon City, who was nowhere to be found.

Five minutes later, they discovered through a witness account that the Mayor had left his room and exited the hotel, heading straight towards the venue, two minutes prior to the power cut.

Attempting to convey this informally, the witness sought to report to Captain Doug. However, before they got to him, power was interrupted in the entire hotel.

After that, it was about fifteen minutes of sheer panic.

While the security personnel were busy pacifying the senators, Lyon Seabot had already reached the basement level of the venue.

This area was initially intended for staff rest and storage of data. But as technology advanced and data centers became more secure, most venues ceased to use physical data storage rooms, favoring the use of dedicated data centers.

Now, it is nothing more than a staff lounge, and even then, employees seldom visit due to the remodeling of the venue.

Lyon Seabot’s reason for coming here was because of an unknown hunch.

As he was revising his speech and preparing for tomorrow’s meeting, a voice echoed in his mind, guiding him to this location. Someone important was waiting for him here.

Guided solely by the faint glow of his cell phone, he ventured through the long, dimly lit corridor until he came upon a door.

With apprehension, he gently pushed open the door deep in the corridor.

Within the room, a single candle was lit. Its flickering light took him back to the days when resources were scarce, decades ago. By the candlelight sat a familiar figure.

High Prosecutor Dominas.

Just before the start of the global conference, he remembered having multiple meetings with the newly appointed High Prosecutor, who, to a certain extent, represented the views of the Foster family.

What pleased him was that the Foster family had decided to back him in the election.

With the support of the Foster family, his prospects of being re-elected seemed fairly optimistic.

Hmm?

Had he forgotten something?

Maybe due to recent stress, his memory had deteriorated significantly, often resulting in gaps and lack of coherence.

However, if he could secure re-election, it would all be worthwhile.

Quickly persuading himself of this, he decided to put those insignificant memory gaps at the back of his mind.

"It’s quite a nostalgic place, isn’t it? If it wasn’t for you initiating the establishment of the global conference system, this venue would have probably been forgotten just like the other obsolete edifices," said Dominas. "It was you who imbued this venue with purpose, turning it into a symbol of the spirit of the global conference."

"The purpose was to express my solidarity to the citizens of District Seventeen that I will never compromise with criminals. But... your invitation for me to come here, this must signify more, right?"

"Of course, your presence here has a very important significance for me."

This venue was the starting point of Lyon’s political career.

Perhaps, it would also serve as an apt launching pad for his High Prosecutor career.

"Oh? I’d like to know what this significant meaning you’re referring to is."

"It means you’re going to bring someone important here...Am I right, Director Lu?"

Dominas intentionally raised his voice, addressing the doorway.

Upon realizing that Mayor Lyon had left his room, Lu Xiang would undoubtedly investigate his whereabouts. A source embedded by Dominas would then timely inform Lu Xiang about the Mayor’s location.

Upon receiving this news, Lu Xiang would rush to the scene as quickly as possible.

Yet, in response to Dominas’ provocative call, there was a prolonged silence.

Time passed, and Dominas’ confident tone gradually shifted, betraying a hint of uncertainty. "Director Lu, I know you’re at the door, why don’t you come in for a chat?"

Yet again, there was a long silence.

After an uneasy while, Lyon was forced to break the deadly silence. "It seems that Director Lu isn’t here. Do you need my help to contact her?"

Awkwardness quickly filled the room. Dominas clenched his teeth, his face turning bright red. Thanks to the dimly lit room, Lyon was spared the sight of his flaming face.

Huh?

Strange.

Ordinarily, Lu Xiang would have hurried to the scene as soon as possible. Why was she deviating from the script at such a moment?

Had she already seen through his plan?

The speech he’d meticulously prepared for next was squarely aimed at Lu Xiang. From his perspective, this would be the first time he would confront Lu Xiang face-to-face— sure to be a historical moment for the entire District Seventeen.

But what was he supposed to say now that Lu Xiang was not present?

Was he to endure a chat with Mayor Lyon in this dingy room?

As myriad thoughts raced through Dominas’ mind, he contemplated ringing Lu Xiang himself, to angrily question her about why, when he had lured Mayor Lyon to a room rigged with explosives, she was nowhere near the scenario she was supposed to oversee as the security supervisor.

Just as the awkward tension was about to hit an all-time high, a voice from outside broke the silence.

"If you’re looking for Lu Xiang, she probably won’t show up."

Both men turned towards the voice to find a figure standing at the doorway, draped in a black cloak and wearing a masquerade mask.

In the dim light, the man seemed to blend in with the darkness.

For a fleeting moment, Dominas had a chilling notion that Lu Xiang might have been killed by this man.

However, the man’s words crushed this assumption. "Because they’re now busy rounding up Dorago Safron on the rooftop of the hotel. So, she didn’t have time to come here. If you have any messages you’d like me to relay, I can do it for you later."
