Chapter 849: Chapter 831: Beware of Human Traffickers_2
There was news that he had escaped to the "outside world" not long ago, but his current situation is unknown.
As they were speaking, a hovering vehicle with the Investigation Bureau’s emblem on its door slowly drove into the scene.
"Here they come,"
Catherine had prepared for this and said, "This is probably the last hint your teacher can give you, Lu Xiang. If you still care about the truth, from now on, you’ll have to investigate it on your own."
.....................
Meanwhile, Song Lan, who was resting in his hotel bed, received a deeply concerned report from Mr. Gu. He claimed that Monica had been contacted by suspicious individuals in secret. They were suspected of being a criminal gang that kidnapped ignorant young girls. He was alone and powerless and hoped to get the help of the Seventeenth District Law Enforcers.
The meeting was set for the afternoon at the café that had been bombed the day before.
After being evacuated from the Kolo Film Industry building, the Law Enforcers cordoned off the whole block. In Mr. Gu’s view, it was the perfect spot for kidnapping and trafficking ignorant young girls.
If Song Lan hadn’t personally experienced the incident yesterday, he might have believed the other party’s lies.
If he guessed correctly, the so-called ignorant young girl is probably the terrorist who detonated a Miniature Tactical Nuclear Bomb in the villa area yesterday.
What puzzled Song Lan the most was that the United Government still hadn’t issued a warrant for Monica.
Given Song Lan’s understanding of the United Government, they should have made Monica the scapegoat for Black Sand’s death as well.
For killing a nationally ranked rescuer and high executives, including the founder of Kolo Film Industry.
Apart from her series of terrorist activities, the bounty would start with at least eight figures, possibly even surpassing everyone’s good friend, Mr. Rat.
But as of now, the information from the Fourth District Law Enforcers was that the criminal was on the run, and they were still trying to investigate.
They couldn’t even pin the blame on Troy, who had already been arrested.
On the one hand, the hacker from the Civil Assassin Organization was still in a coma; on the other hand, he couldn’t be carrying out the assassination of Kolo Film Industry’s founder while locked up in jail.
The Law Enforcers of the Fourth District were frantic over this. They must be in dire need of a hero descending from the heavens to help them take the blame and close the case.
Out of his duty to the Law Enforcers, Song Lan eventually agreed to Mr. Gu’s request.
After they met, there was an inevitable tussle.
This time, Song Lan stood his ground, insisting on returning the two gold cards handed to him by Gustav, a move that attracted the curious glances of the customers in the tea restaurant. After all, seeing two grown men wrestling with each other in broad daylight like wrestlers was quite a rare sight. The anxious waiter stood by for a long while, at a loss on how to intervene.
The tea restaurant offered air conditioning and free WIFI, which Gustav chose after observation.
After taking their seats, Song Lan learned about what had happened that morning.
Someone had contacted Monica under the name of her father, hoping to meet her that afternoon.
And Monica was not the type to act impulsively; she informed Gustav as soon as he returned and planned to set up an ambush instead.
Gustav also fully demonstrated his cautious nature. After not being able to contact Qi He all night, he knew that the situation had changed. However, they were short-staffed at the moment. Apart from him, almost no one from the organization was in the Fourth District. To avoid becoming a stepping-stone for an unknown enemy, he decisively adopted the tactic of calling a friend and dialed Song Lan’s number.
In times of trouble, friends are your best allies. This adage is always enlightening, no matter when.
Song Lan found himself reassessing the man before him once again.
Not everyone can maintain a cautious approach at all times. Powerful strength is often a curse, making one hot-headed and resort to rushing in with tactics. In this regard, the one known as "Emperor," the United Government’s Strongest Six Star rescuer, is a negative example.
In The First Region, he paid a painful price for taking on the botanist alone.
Song Lan felt that Gustav’s prudence was commendable. After all, this matter could possibly involve entities of the caliber of RT1-RT3. Seeking his help beforehand was always better than having him conduct a brain-burning analysis after the event from the corpses or Monica’s abduction.
Moreover, he got a free lunch out of it.
Before the appointed time arrived, the two men turned over the isolation strip early and hid in a dark corner.
Gustav guessed that the person who set up the meeting with Monica might be Kolo Film Industry founder’s counterattack, and they were not eager to issue a warrant for Monica for a reason.
After receiving news that the two were in position, Monica arrived at the agreed location as scheduled.
Time trickled by second by second, with a disquieting atmosphere quietly spreading in the silence.
After what seemed an indeterminate amount of time, a figure appeared within the sight of both individuals.
Unlike the assassin they had imagined, the visitor had expended a fair amount of effort just to avoid the Law Enforcers patrolling the perimeter. He appeared to be in his early forties, dressed like a corporate employee who had just finished work.
By conservative estimate, such a man wouldn’t require their intervention; Monica herself could take down several of him single-handedly.
Song Lan turned her head and cast a dubious look at Gustav.
However, Gustav beside her was utterly astounded, muttering to himself, "This... it’s impossible."
"What’s impossible?"
"He is Monica’s father, but wasn’t he supposed to have..."
"Been the victim of the car bomb attack?"
Song Lan gave the man a few more glances.
"Qi He had investigated the files and sent people to check the scene, confirming his death. Monica’s mother as well, Kolo Film Industry doesn’t plan to leave any survivors."
It seemed as though Monica was also stunned by this outcome.
The anticipated fight didn’t come to pass; instead, they entered into an extended and steady phase of conversation.
Not long after the man entered the café, Monica unilaterally cut off the audio communication, and Song Lan and Gustav could only watch as the two of them found a spot amidst the ruins to sit down.
"Monica is a cautious child; she wouldn’t be easily duped."
Gustav spoke with conviction, but to Song Lan, this sounded more like an attempt to convince himself.
To him, a neutral outsider, the atmosphere of the conversation between Monica and her father didn’t escalate to a knife-edge tension. The conversation was primarily led by the middle-aged man, and Song Lan guessed he was probably explaining to Monica why he had left no trace behind and disappeared for so many years after his "death."
The conversation lasted nearly half an hour, throughout which there were no physical altercations, until after the man left, Monica sat silently on the broken ruins, her gaze filled with loss.
From Song Lan’s perspective, it was Gustav who seemed more like an anxious old father at this moment, having witnessed the entire episode of his daughter being targeted by a human trafficking ring.
And the one attempting to abduct Monica was none other than her biological father, supposedly dead for years from the car bomb incident.
"From a standpoint of absolute fairness and justice, you, in fact, more closely resemble a member of the abducting group,"
Song Lan shared her perspective, "Are you certain Monica’s father indeed died in the car bomb incident?"
"Certain."
Gustav’s reply didn’t contain a hint of hesitation.
"What about the evidence?"
"...The evidence is with Qi He."
"So, have you actually seen any evidence that definitively proves this matter?"
"I haven’t... Are you doubting us?"
"What I think isn’t important."
Song Lan shook her head, "What matters is, before long Monica will probably ask you the same question. How do you plan to prove that what she just witnessed was all a fabrication?"
As they spoke, the middle-aged man’s figure gradually receded into the distance, soon disappearing around the corner of the street.
And it was at this moment, after a long interruption, that the communication was reestablished.
"Where is Qi He?"
Monica made her intent clear, "I want to see him."
