Chapter 831: Chapter 823: I’m Not a Bad Person_2
Devil, pervert!
Besides widening her eyes, the clerk was unable to respond in any other way.
The person before her was more terrifying than any sadistic serial killer she had seen in the movies. His face bore no twisted smile or intimidating expression; he spoke of these horrible matters in a calm and orderly tone.
"You understand now, don’t you? If I were a bad guy, you would have already lost consciousness and be lying on the sofa."
Song Lan said, "But now, you can make yourself a cup of hot coffee, on me."
"What exactly do you want?"
"Your reasons for doing this, of course. But if you really don’t want to tell me, I can go and ask Gustav himself."
Upon hearing this, the clerk’s pupils shrank, and her whole body trembled.
"...I must do it."
Gustav’s name seemed to hit the clerk’s soft spot, causing her to slump into the chair, "It’s a revenge. Mr. Gustav is just helping us."
The investigation finally made a breakthrough.
As Song Lan had always emphasized, with a bit of luck, anyone could become a famous detective, or even an agent from the United Government’s highest-level intelligence department.
Before walking through the doors of this coffee shop, he had not anticipated the current situation. He came purely for the air conditioning and free WIFI.
And, just like in the movies, every act of revenge would dredge up old affairs.
It all went back to over a decade ago when Kolo Film Industry first incorporated corrupting criminals into its corporate strategy. At that time, paying criminals substantial amounts of money to cooperate in productions had not yet become an industry norm. When someone proposed this plan, it faced strong opposition from a part of the company.
What Kolo Film Industry did was not merely bribing but included the nurturing of criminals and a series of measures to help them escape the punishment of the Law Enforcers.
To a part of the company, it was no different from growing fruit. Once the criminals that the company had nurtured in secret became a significant presence, they would have their rescuers pick the fruit.
The criminals listed in the company’s books would eventually be sent to specially designed prisons, where they would enjoy VIP treatment. When the fuss had died down and people gradually forgot about them, they could regain their freedom with enough money to splurge for the rest of their lives.
This project gained the support of most rescuers.
Because compared to fighting truly vicious criminals, sparring with a group of "actors" hired by the company was much more relaxed.
Even the injuries were just special effects during filming.
"Mikaela once said, ’People only want to see the moment the villain is defeated, who they are and where they come from doesn’t matter.’"
And this phrase also set the course for Kolo Film Industry’s future development.
"Was this plan initially proposed by Mikaela?"
"It was her."
The clerk said, "But Black Sand’s death has nothing to do with Mr. Gustav. That national level rescuer wasn’t killed by him."
She guessed that the Military Intelligence Section Seven agent before her had come for this reason.
Unlike Mikaela, the United Government would definitely investigate Black Sand’s death thoroughly.
"...Did you once work for Kolo Film Industry?"
Song Lan intentionally skipped over the "Black Sand" who had died in an accident and asked.
The clerk mentioned many details, as if she had also been present at those meetings.
"The person who told me these things is already dead."
The clerk lowered her head, "After he had gathered enough evidence and wanted to expose Kolo Film Industry."
"Murder to silence."
This result was not surprising to Song Lan.
Song Lan wanted to continue asking questions, but he saw a change in the clerk’s eyes. Her gaze moved past him and through the cafe window, toward a distant crowd.
Following her line of sight, he spotted a girl in the crowd wearing a white jacket, sporting short hair, about the same age as Veronica, looking in their direction. Sensing his gaze, the girl immediately averted her eyes, put on her headphones, and turned to blend into the crowd.
The brief eye contact seemed to give the clerk strength.
She mustered all her strength to grab Song Lan’s arm, as if afraid he would chase after the girl.
She mumbled under her breath, "They said the company would come here sooner or later."
So, they had prepared for this day long ago.
It was not just the readiness to sacrifice but also to rip a piece of flesh from the company.
Song Lan smelled the chemical odor permeating the air, and the next moment, the cool breeze of the air conditioning was replaced by a scorching blast.
The ground beneath their feet shook, a rumble shattered the glass, and pedestrians on the street stopped in their tracks, staring at the cafe now being devoured by fire and heat waves.
The clerk fell silent, only gripping Song Lan’s arms with both hands, trying to make him stay forever in this place engulfed by flames.
The two locked eyes, but she saw no hint of panic in Song Lan’s gaze. Instead, the man in front of her had an epiphany just before being swallowed by the flames.
"The dead company executive had a daughter, and for some reason, he entrusted her to you."
The clerk’s eyes confirmed his guess.
As for why the orphan of the company executive could survive under the radar of Kolo Film Industry until today, he guessed Qi He must have helped a lot behind the scenes.
"Is she a psychic, or does she have other talents?"
"That’s not important. What’s important is you..."
The person before him was destined to be consumed by the explosion, a gift the clerk had prepared for the company’s assassin. But just then, the clerk’s consciousness went blank for a moment, and she witnessed the entire process of the cafe turning into rubble from the explosion.
This was the back alley of the cafe, surrounded by many people.
Their attention, however, was captured by the sudden explosion at the cafe, and they did not notice the two who had suddenly appeared.
"It really is starting to feel more and more like a movie," Song Lan remarked.
He understood the whole story—it had been revenge from the past from the very beginning.
Yet, the truth often comes with a painful price.
Now he had lost his air conditioning and free WiFi, and he had to find another place to spend the afternoon.
"I could show you a way out," he said to the clerk who had yet to come to her senses. "I don’t know if you watch ’Master of Rescuers,’ but this season they wanted to come up with some different gimmicks. If those pieces of evidence were preserved for some reason, maybe you could try your luck with Mr. Sean Grant. As far as I know, people say he’s an upstanding guy."
Seeing the doubt in the clerk’s eyes, he added, "Of course, you could also see everything that’s happening as part of Kolo Film Industry’s scheme, aiming to completely destroy the evidence and prevent future trouble."
Without looking back, Song Lan walked toward the opposite side of the street.
He spotted a cake shop across the traffic and crowd and hoped that after he walked in, he would see a sign saying "Free WiFi available here."
That afternoon, rumors spread quickly in District Four.
Everyone understood the terror of Rob Lucci and CP0.
He was a ruthless character who operated beyond the law.
In a brutally cruel manner, he tortured a clerk in the cafe who was suspected of having ties with the Civil Assassin Organization. After extracting all the secrets from her, he bombed the entire cafe to the ground, obliterating all evidence of the crime.
When the Law Enforcers and firefighters arrived at the scene, all that awaited them were the charred ruins.
They could not find any evidence that could identify the victim, clearly, before Rob Lucci left, he had already erased every trace of the clerk’s existence.
