Chapter 822: 819

Teacher?

This appellation made the other people on the first floor all turn to look at Catherine.

Catherine waved to them friendly and introduced herself, "My name is Catherine. I am currently working at the Bureau of Unnatural Case Investigation and I used to teach ’Crime Psychology’ at Morning Star Academy."

At Morning Star, any teacher would have been impressed by Lu Xiang, and Catherine was no exception.

"It’s a real pity you didn’t transfer to our department after graduation. I’ve been constantly bringing this up with the director... However, I heard that your work in District 17 has been going smoothly, which is known as a paradise for criminals."

The border city, with its entire judicial system firmly controlled by the Foster Family, provides fertile ground for crime in many ways.

"Hmm, I submitted an application, but it was rejected."

Lu Xiang said indifferently, having long accepted this outcome; in fact, she was even more grateful that she was eventually reassigned to District 17.

"It was the people from the Conservative Faction, mainly the Iris Consortium."

Far from avoiding the topic, Catherine said, "On one hand, they hope to recruit some trustworthy people into the bureau, and on the other hand, I heard you didn’t get along too well with the young miss of the consortium during your time at school."

The one who took Lu Xiang’s place in the Bureau of Unnatural Case Investigation was Hanna, the "Perennial Runner-Up" of that year.

Though she was in no way as capable as Lu Xiang, she had the advantage of "pure lineage," with both parents being members of the Conservative Faction and a grandfather who had once held a post in the Review Meeting.

"It’s regrettable, but this is reality. Sometimes the word of the Iris Consortium matters far more than academic performance, especially since the Bureau of Unnatural Case Investigation has always been backed by the Conservative Faction..."

"I’m aware of that, Teacher Catherine, and I haven’t taken it to heart."

Lu Xiang had to make her stance clear.

Catherine smiled, "I just feel it’s a real loss for the bureau; we need talented people like you."

These were her heartfelt thoughts; it was just a shame that her position didn’t give her the power to go against her superiors or the authority to personally select newcomers.

The major families set strict standards for recruitment, something "outsiders" like them were unable to influence.

Lately, the truth seemed to become cheaper by the day, with everyone just calculating how not to be held accountable.

"Sometimes I really miss teaching days at Morning Star. At least there, it was possible to discuss the cases seriously."

"Teacher, have you encountered any problems?"

Lu Xiang asked.

This was a dangerous remark, especially coming from a high-ranking official of the Bureau of Unnatural Case Investigation. If someone with an agenda recorded it and posted it online, it could cause quite a stir.

"Three homicides in two days, including the death of a national-level rescuer, and the higher-ups want to pin it on a bunch of civilians."

Catherine sat down on the couch, deep in thought.

Looking at Lu Xiang involuntarily reminded her of the past; she was always keen to discuss cases with this clever young woman whose ideas sometimes even inspired her.

"Is that really what you think, or are you just acting out with your teacher?"

Catherine shook her head helplessly, "Well then, let’s assume the killer belongs to the civilian organization captured by the surveillance and the motive for their actions?"

"To gain fame or assassinate a person with a specific identity."

"Then, what’s missing at the scene is something crucial."

"A signature."

Lu Xiang blurted out, "Such killers usually leave their mark at the scene, either a symbol or a specific method of killing."

"I’m glad to hear it seems you haven’t given back everything you learned to me," Catherine said with a satisfied smile. "I heard there had been a similar homicide in District 17 before. To puncture someone’s chest cavity takes a lot of effort, especially through an exoskeleton armor the victim was wearing."

"Teacher, that’s a breach of the confidentiality agreement," Lu Xiang cautioned, "You shouldn’t reveal case details to us who are unrelated."

"By the rules of the bureau, that is true, but if we combine this case with the Chai Ke case from District 17 for investigation, then you could become our external consultant," Catherine suggested, her interest piqued by Lu Xiang’s demeanor.

The student seemed quite reluctant to get involved with the case, "If the bureau’s records are correct, the killer who murdered Chai Ke has also never been found."

This was far from the Lu Xiang Catherine knew.

Back at school, Lu Xiang was always digging to the bottom of cases that had nothing to do with her, sometimes spending all night pondering the details of a case and pursuing every clue to exhaustion, until reaching a dead end.

Catherine took Lu Xiang’s attitude as her holding a grudge against the investigation bureau.

After all, being rejected by the bureau was a heavy blow for the chief student of that year, especially after being relegated to a border city like District 17, a place no one wanted to go to.
