Chapter 770: Chapter 768: Freedom_1
"I’m heading to the town square now; I’ll leave this book with you. Stay here and don’t go out—they don’t know you’re in town,"
the Paladin said as a final word of caution before hurrying out of the house. As he was about to leave, something seemed to occur to him, and he added, "If I don’t come back, this book should be able to help you find where the Tidal Church is... Also, remember the promise between us."
The "Emperor" watched the Paladin go.
But he did not recall making any promise to the man. If the Paladin was referring to transporting the townspeople out of town with those airships, then the old man was probably doomed to disappointment.
The Mechanical Army was not his ally, and they might not be the rescuers the Paladin imagined them to be.
But he could not expect much from an old man who had lived his entire life on an isolated island and had never left it.
"You said before, you want to free the people of the town?"
he asked.
Events on the island were starting to spiral beyond his control. This was the first time "Emperor" discovered just how powerless the Six-Star Rescuer’s strength was. In the battle of paths, his ability to effect change was limited.
Diago nodded with determination.
This was both the mission he believed Father God had entrusted him with, and also his own heartfelt emotion.
He thought that the people in town should not have to live this way.
"This will probably be much more difficult than you imagine. I have seen similar situations before,"
It was a backward, dilapidated town in the "outside world," where the survivors struggled to live. A church as absurd as the Tidal Church controlled the town. The "Emperor" guessed these people liked to use the "God" banner because they found it more conducive to their brainwashing.
With oppressive rule and faith, they could make the people they governed compliant.
Of course, the world never lacked people with a spirit of resistance. "I have met people like the Paladin and you in that town, who moved among the crowds, urging people to see the true nature of the church,"
However, he only learned about that resister’s deeds later on.
"Was he successful?"
"No."
The "Emperor" said, "When I arrived in town, there was a headless corpse on the execution platform in the square. I later heard about that person from others. The locals had tied him up and handed him over to the local church to be executed. Afterwards, they hung his head outside the town to warn everyone."
With that, he headed for the door.
The Tidal Sect’s counting of heads was almost done. Before dawn, they would tie the offerings onto fishing boats to send out to sea.
Diago seemed to anticipate what was about to happen and followed suit.
"In the ’outside world,’ things like this happen every day, so I’ve learned enough lessons,"
said the "Emperor," facing the streetlights in the town square, "Wanting to overthrow them takes more than the will and determination of your consciousness; otherwise, it will only hasten your demise."
His prosthetic eyes shone a red hue; every believer of Tidal Sect had been marked by them, making them visible to him even in the dark.
Soon, the townspeople and the followers of Tidal Sect noticed their presence.
A cry of alarm erupted among the believers, and those who had experienced the might of the Mechanical Army instinctively wanted to flee. However, the leading believer stopped everyone and watched the "Emperor" and Diago behind him with a predatory gaze.
He toyed with a strange "spell" the "Emperor" had never seen before.
This "spell" indeed had some effect; the obscure and complicated chant wrapped their heads in clouds, a process so protracted that the "Emperor" believed the High Priest of the Tidal Church must rarely have faced real combat.
In an actual battlefield, this "casting time" would have been long enough for the High Priest to be killed off numerous times.
However, out of politeness and curiosity, he did not interrupt. When the High Priest finally completed his "casting," a bolt of lightning finally descended from the roiling clouds onto the "Emperor."
This unnatural phenomenon seemed to evoke the primal fear branded in the genes of the residents, who fell to the ground in terror.
The High Priest looked on coldly at the dust stirred up by the lightning. No one could withstand the wrath of the Master.
He relished the eyes of the residents, which always allowed him to deeply feel the authority of being a "messenger of God."
But soon, his cold smile froze on his face.
The first thing that caught his eye through the dust was a pair of glowing crimson prosthetic eyes, a sight they equated with a symbol of demons.
Indeed, as soon as the dark clouds engulfed the town, the "Emperor" had guessed the High Priest’s intention. The built-in operations system had even calculated its power and the potential destruction it could cause before the thunder sounded.
"0%, that’s the probability of you able to harm me."
The High Priest wanted to say something more but suddenly found his feet excruciatingly heavy. Speaking, let alone breathing, had become extraordinarily difficult.
Despite straining to support his body, he still couldn’t stop himself from being pushed down.
About two or three seconds later, his body finally buckled under the burden and knelt to the ground. Following the High Priest’s example, the usually high-and-mighty followers of Tidal Sect knelt under the oppressive gravity before the "Emperor," their expressions varied, some terrified, some disbelieving.
They, as messengers of God, were kneeling before the enemy of their Master.
The continuously increasing gravity didn’t seem willing to release them. They could no longer look directly at the "Emperor" as their heads were slammed down onto the ground, and it seemed as though the very earth beneath their feet was caving in as well.
This blow was enough to turn the High Priest’s face into a bloody, fleshy mess.
His nose was broken, and his mouth was filled with dirt; he felt as if his eyeballs might pop out of their sockets at any moment.
The shadow of death enveloped him.
"Don’t, don’t kill me!"
The messenger of God mustered his last bit of strength and cried out.
This time, even the townspeople showed expressions of disbelief. He began to doubt if he was hallucinating. How could a messenger of the Master beg for mercy from His enemies?
The High Priest’s pleas seemed to have an effect, diminishing the power that was pressing down on them, and he finally took the opportunity to breathe heavily a few times.
No, this was not a plea for mercy.
It was a trick to confuse the enemy. He believed the Master would surely understand his plan.
As he had anticipated, the enemy fell for the trap. The iron lump actually thought it had won and came to look down at him with condescending eyes.
"Tell me everything you know."
The "Emperor" commanded in a tone that brooked no argument.
He hadn’t expected the High Priest to beg for mercy; he thought that followers of the Lord of the Tides would be fanatic enough to willingly give their lives for their Master, but the person before him clearly had a weak spine.
"Alright, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you everything,"
the High Priest said repeatedly.
From his narrative, the "Emperor" learned about the basic situation of the Tidal Church. The island’s inhabitants couldn’t find it because it was located at the bottom of the central sea area of the archipelago, right where the ruins of the Sunken Kingdom were. The Church already occupied an area that exceeded the concept of a church and was more like an independent state.
The high-level councilors who had escaped from The First Region were there now, treated as honored guests by the Church.
However, only those protected by the Lord of the Tides could pass through the deep sea to reach the Church. Any others who tried to intrude would be shredded by monsters dwelling in the depths.
The High Priest was indeed too cooperative. He even divulged details he hadn’t been asked about.
Was this due to a strong will to live, or...
The commotion from the town interrupted the interrogation. The High Priest also heard the sound drawing near and suddenly his expression changed, revealing a sinister look, "Idiot! You’ll never reach the Church. You’re about to die right here!"
In the depths of the mist, a massive creature loomed.
Zeal returned once more to the High Priest’s eyes, "The messenger of the Master has come! I almost forgot to tell you, the true purpose of the Ceremony just now was to summon the messenger here."
Unlike the High Priest and the followers of the Tidal Sect, it was the unknown creatures lurking in the depths of the ocean that were the true messengers of the Lord of the Tides.
The Master trusted His own creations more than humans.
The creature that emerged from the depths of the mist was so large that its body spanned the entire town. Its massive frame leaped out of the ocean, creating tsunamis tens of meters high.
The intense stench of fish swept over the town like a typhoon. The sea monster opened its gargantuan mouth, seemingly ready to swallow the entire town along with the ground beneath their feet.
"You’re done for, you’re completely done for!"
The High Priest looked up at the dark figure overhead, his tone growing increasingly manic.
The townspeople were already numbed. They heard the noise, came out to the streets, and, like zombies, they looked up and quietly waited for the moment they would be swallowed.
The "Emperor" looked gravely at the massive figure.
Escaping the range of the sea monster’s attack wouldn’t be difficult, but the challenge was how to keep the townspeople safe.
He saw the Paladin on the street, shouting warnings for people to leave town quickly, but those by his side were like soulless shells, ignoring his warnings.
The tsunami reached the town first.
In the blink of an eye, the land beneath their feet was engulfed by the waves.
But the "Emperor" immediately noticed something unusual—they seemed to be submerged by the tsunami only visually; in reality, they were still standing in place, even their clothes remained dry.
He suddenly thought of something and looked over at Diago not far away.
The latter’s eyes were tightly shut, not speaking, until the massive body of the sea creature slammed towards them.
But just like the tsunami, the falling sea monster passed straight through their bodies.
The "Emperor" could clearly see every detail on the sea monster; they were within arm’s reach, yet it seemed like they were separated by a distance of time and space.
The High Priest’s maniacal laughter was replaced by confusion.
He could clearly see the messenger of the Master had swallowed the entire town, so why were they still standing here? Why could they still perceive everything around them so clearly?
"Father God says..."
Diago slowly opened his eyes, looking directly at the High Priest, "Despicable villains, no matter what they do, are doomed to fail."
