Chapter 763: Chapter 761: Mechanical Plague_1
Lu Xiang woke up exceptionally early that day.
It was still dark when she received a life-or-death call from Captain Doug.
Arriving at the crime scene two hours earlier than her usual work time, she finished washing up, changed into her Law Enforcer uniform, and rushed off without even having time to eat.
Everyone in the Special Operations Team was excited because a rare murder had occurred in District Seventeen, and it appeared to be an extraordinary case.
By the time she arrived, the body had been covered with a white cloth.
Lu Xiang noticed blood seeping through near the chest of the body, easily suggesting a shocking wound.
"The victim was a jobless vagrant who became idle after losing his job; he spent his days drinking. Half a month ago, he was arrested for causing trouble while drunk and had just been released a couple of days ago,"
Captain Doug immediately reported to Lu Xiang the basic situation of the victim, "However, according to our investigation, there doesn’t seem to be anyone who bore such deep grudges against him. We specifically looked into the women they harassed half a month ago, and they all have solid alibis. Moreover, even if it was revenge, they wouldn’t have left the scene like this."
As Doug reported, Lu Xiang uncovered one of the white cloths to examine the wound.
The victim’s chest had been pierced, and his heart had vanished into thin air.
All three victims had died in the same manner, killed instantly.
"We checked the surveillance, but all we know is that these three suddenly acted as if bewitched, staggered into the alley and never came out."
Various signs pointed to this being an unsolved mystery.
Even during the most chaotic times in District Seventeen, it was rare for someone to murder and then take the victim’s heart; the scene looked more like an act of venting rage.
"Was there anyone else who entered the alley before them?"
"No one at all."
Doug said, "That’s the strangest part, boss. Look at this."
He transferred the footage captured by the surveillance camera to his phone, showing the last moment when the three drunks were filmed. By then, they were already dead drunk, squatting by the roadside. A few minutes later, as if they had seen something, they suddenly turned their heads to look somewhere.
"See their eyes? They clearly saw someone, and that’s why they followed into the alley."
Yet, the person seen by the three men did not appear in the surveillance footage.
"That direction leads to the Square Theater."
"That’s right, the theater did have a ghost incident a few years back. Some claimed to have seen the spirit of a deceased actress wandering in the theater at midnight. However, it was later proven to be a publicity stunt by theater staff, and they were fined 700,000 watts for it..."
Lu Xiang no longer continued listening.
She thought of the masked woman she had encountered the day before.
The Spirit Troupe had arrived in District Seventeen only a few days ago, and now a murder had occurred near the Square Theater. There couldn’t possibly be such a coincidence in this world.
.........
At the same time, Song Lan also witnessed a murder.
The victim was Father Godel.
He never imagined that the second time he saw the missionary from the Tidal Church, the man would be lying like a dead fish in the center of Silvermoon Harbor Square, his chest pierced and his heart gone without a trace.
His eyes were wide open, retaining the expression he had just before death, as if he had seen something incredibly terrifying before he passed away.
Residents of Silvermoon Harbor discovered Father Godel’s body, and onlookers formed a circle in the square. Before long, the local military arrived upon hearing the news. They dispersed the crowd and carefully examined Father Godel’s corpse.
Ever since Kunka led his troops to garrison in Silvermoon Harbor, maintaining local public order had become one of their responsibilities as well.
The identity of the deceased was special, as it involved the Tidal Church.
It was an entity that not even the Lunar Eclipse Sect would dare to provoke lightly. To avoid the incident escalating into a conflict between the Tidal Church and the local residents of Silvermoon Harbor, they took over the case immediately and announced they would apprehend the murderer as soon as possible, to restore peace to Silvermoon Harbor.
People were abuzz with speculation.
Some said that Father Godel had provoked some unknown entities, because not long before, their ship docked in the port had been burned down, and Diago, whom they deemed a heretic, had not been found to this day.
This sudden murder case caused the people of Silvermoon Harbor to be filled with anxiety. According to the garrison that took over the case, the murderer was very likely still in Silvermoon Harbor and hadn’t left. They were extremely worried that they might be attacked just like Father Godel when walking at night and have their hearts taken.
However, the only one who saw through the truth was an ostensibly young detective named Song Lan, who was in fact lying asleep at home.
The reason he seemed young was because his gaze had once again fallen upon Diago.
With the help of fishbone porridge, Diago recovered very quickly, and in just one day he had reached the point where he could get out of bed and move around freely.
As for the reason for seeing through the truth, it was because he had seen Diago holding a still-beating heart in his hands.
Blood soaked his hands.
After killing Father Godel, he stayed at the scene while the comings and goings of Silvermoon Harbor’s residents merely ignored him.
However, it didn’t take long before another detective who had also seen through the truth arrived in front of Diago.
With a body of steel like a small mountain standing before him, his blue light flickering in his prosthetic eye, he looked down at the heart Diago held in his hands, seemingly hesitating over how to punish the young murderer.
Father Godel had vowed to capture Diago and sacrifice him to the Lord of Tides to atone for his sins. Therefore, Diago took matters into his own hands and acted first, taking the priest’s life before he could be caught.
Even the motive for the crime was established.
But "Emperor" still had one mystery that was unsolved, "Why did you take his heart?"
For a young man, such a method was perhaps a bit too... cruel.
Moreover, it seemed that he had not used any weapons or tools when killing Father Godel, but rather had taken the man’s heart out with his bare hands.
Diago remained silent, simply looking up at "Emperor" and then handing the heart he was holding to him.
The moment "Emperor" took the heart, his eyes suddenly flashed with a hint of red.
Right in front of Diago, with an even more "cruel" technique, he dismantled the heart. However, what presented itself before Song Lan was not bursting flesh and blood, but a precise set of gears spinning after peeling back the still beating exterior.
"He was infected."
Diago finally spoke, "He had to be killed before he committed an irredeemable atrocity in the harbor."
He appeared unrepentant for his actions, and this no longer sounded like a matter of personal vendetta in the traditional sense.
"How did you know?"
"’Father God’ foretold to me the future of the harbor."
?
Hearing this, the onlooking detective Song Lan could not stand it anymore.
Blatant slander!
He was innocent; he had never given any orders to kill Father Godel!
