Chapter 751: Chapter 749: Alone in a Foreign Land_1
Silvermoon Harbor was the same as always at night.
"Emperor" sat in the seaside bar, with a platter of coastal city’s unique snacks on the table.
The freshly caught fish from the sea only needed a simple preparation, served with vinegar and mustard as dipping sauces, which was the favorite evening meal of the people of Silvermoon Harbor.
With the return of the fishing boats, the fall of night brought the busiest time here.
He not only appreciated the taste of the seafood platter, but also analyzed all the ingredients in them.
Even after his tongue and taste buds had been replaced by synthetic ones, "Emperor" still retained his old habits. He enjoyed sitting in the bar late at night, watching the guests come and go, and occasionally hearing them talk about their recent amusing experiences. Drinking and boasting with friends after a day’s work was the lifestyle of the people in Silvermoon Harbor.
The hustle and bustle of the bar always made "Emperor" feel like he had come to another world.
There were no prison-like skyscrapers here, no cutthroat office politics; people’s lives were so simple that they almost seemed primitive. Although living in the same era, they seemed to inhabit two parallel worlds.
In Silvermoon Harbor that day, he also heard quite a few stories about Kunka.
In fact, the arrival of the Expeditionary Army inevitably brought turbulence to this peaceful and serene port city. Most of the recruits responding to the major conscription were gang members with a history of offenses. Facing the defenseless civilians of Silvermoon Harbor, some of them quickly revealed their true nature.
But Kunka demonstrated his iron-fisted approach.
He dealt with the troublemakers in Silvermoon Harbor seriously, enacted a series of new decrees, and also established good relations with the locals through cooperative assistance. Most residents of Silvermoon Harbor now regarded him as the Border Defense General, and their arrival once helped the locals resolve the pirate trouble.
Just a few days before "Emperor" came to Silvermoon Harbor, Kunka had led his men to eradicate the pirates on islets not far from Silvermoon Harbor. Their heroic deeds were widely spoken of in Silvermoon Harbor.
However, this was in stark contrast to the propaganda about these rebels by the United Government.
In the propaganda within the United Government, the Rebel Army was accused of committing heinous acts of burning, killing, and looting in Silvermoon Harbor, with Kunka himself being no less a tyrant than Esinvig.
Public opinion seemed to be subtly laying the groundwork for a future day when the United Government would crusade against the Rebel Army leader Kunka to save the people of Silvermoon Harbor from the fire and water.
"Emperor" trusted what he saw with his own eyes more.
Therefore, he decided to stay here, not to deal with Kunka as a rescuer of the United Government.
Before long, someone approached his table and sat down, picking up the liquor he ordered and pouring a drink for themselves.
"It seems you really like it here," said the woman, who appeared to be in her early thirties and casually crossed her legs with an air of authority, after emptying the glass in one gulp, "Why not consider settling down here? Everyone likes you... Tsk, why do you always drink such low-alcohol beverages?"
The woman sitting across the table was nameless; the townspeople only called her "Seagull."
Like him, she was accustomed to going by a codename.
She was the only information broker in town, and the most well-informed person in the entirety of Silvermoon Harbor, with some knowledge of the movements of both the Lunar Eclipse Sect and the Barrosa Group. It was said that in her youth, she was a mercenary for the Barrosa Group and settled down in Silvermoon Harbor after withdrawing from the Barrosa Group following the end of the commercial-religious wars.
So, despite her looks suggesting she was just in her early thirties, her actual age was probably much older than most people in Silvermoon Harbor.
"Emperor" remembered his first visit to Silvermoon Harbor.
Back then, "Seagull" sat across from him just like this, arrogantly propping her long boots on the table, and suggested that he leave Silvermoon Harbor quickly as people here did not welcome strange folks like him.
The townspeople really couldn’t be blamed, for the "Emperor" knew that with his current image, anyone who saw him would treat him as a scientific freak. It was precisely for this reason that the people of Silvermoon Harbor affectionately called him Frankenstein the Freak.
Frankenstein was the name he used while traveling in the Neutral Country, and Freak was the impression the locals had of him.
After assisting the people of Silvermoon Harbor in repelling the pirates, they finally accepted him.
"How’s the matter I tasked you to inquire about coming along?"
"Before that, I’d like to ask you," Seagull’s gaze suddenly sharpened, and instead of answering, she countered, "The Tidal Sect, why are you inquiring about them?"
You should know that in Silvermoon Harbor, even the most devout believers of the Lunar Eclipse Sect wouldn’t want to trouble themselves with the Tidal Sect.
They are one of the very few believers who manage to maintain different faiths and live peacefully in the same area.
"I have my reasons."
"But you should know, anyone who gets involved with the Tidal Sect, in the end, doesn’t fare well."
"I know."
The atmosphere fell into silence. The two gazed at each other across the table for a long while before Seagull finally let out a long sigh and said, "Not long ago, a group of people did come to Silvermoon Harbor, but they didn’t stay at the port. They boarded a ship of the Tidal Sect the same night and went to the Misty Archipelago. Judging from their attire, they were neither locals nor believers of the Tidal Sect... As for their identities and why they came here, I do not know. You know I don’t like getting involved in their affairs."
Besides establishing a transit point in Silvermoon Harbor, another task of the Tidal Sect was to develop followers locally, converting them to their Sea Tide Lord.
In earlier years, quite a number of people joined the Church under their propaganda.
Newcomers to the church would be uniformly taken to the Misty Archipelago.
However, according to Seagull, those port residents who went to the Misty Archipelago never returned here, and their families could never contact them again from then on.
God knows whether they truly reached the Misty Archipelago or were thrown overboard to feed the fish at sea.
The "Emperor" did not respond, simply watching her calmly.
After much hesitation, Seagull spoke again, "The one in charge of the Tidal Sect here is Father Godel. He manages the propaganda and the initiation ceremonies. If you want to board the ship to the Misty Archipelago, you must have his approval."
It seemed she was worried the "Emperor" might not grasp what this meant, so she added, "Only believers of the Tidal Sect can board that ship, no matter what your purpose in going to the Misty Archipelago, it’s not a good idea."
"Thanks, Seagull."
A pale blue halo flickered in the "Emperor"’s prosthetic eye, and at nearly the same moment, Seagull received a notification of incoming funds—the usual fee for the information, and even a bit extra, due to the involvement of the Tidal Sect.
But it was this very transfer that held back many words Seagull wanted to say.
For an information peddler, Frankenstein was undoubtedly a premium client.
Easy to communicate with, purposeful, generous, never quibbling over trivial matters, but... perhaps deep inside her heart, she didn’t wish their relationship to remain just between an information peddler and a client, which was why she kept advising him repeatedly not to investigate the Tidal Sect.
Out of personal desire, she hoped this freak would stay in Silvermoon Harbor for a long time, even settle down here.
After an indefinite amount of time, Seagull sighed.
She poured herself another glass of wine and raised it, saying, "I wish you all the best."
