Chapter 711: Chapter 709: Vacation_1
Melissa finally understood the dangerous topic her colleagues had mentioned.
"You went to investigate the identities of those thugs?"
For the Anti-Terrorism Mobile Squad, such behavior was inconceivable. Although they were under the same Law Enforcers system, solving cases and investigating had never been within their job scope. Their duties were straightforward; they simply took care of whoever their superiors told them to.
As for the reasons or why those people went mad, these were not for them to consider.
The responsibilities of the Anti-Terrorism Mobile Squad were very clear; they were the weapons of the United Government, and weapons never needed to have their own thoughts and emotions. They could entirely spend their leisure time studying human anatomy instead.
But now, Ulan had violated this principle.
"There was no need for a detailed investigation; a cursory one was enough to figure it out."
Ulan laughed at himself wryly, "The man who was killed yesterday was named Orman. He had just finished paying off the enormous debt from his prosthetic implantation, then was unceremoniously dismissed by his company. At least the prosthetic implantation we got before heading onto the battlefield was free. Otherwise, we definitely wouldn’t be able to pay off the debt with the price of military-grade prosthetics."
Melissa fell silent, as these were not topics Ulan usually talked about.
After a long while, she asked, "What do you plan to do?"
"I urged them to understand the reality, at least to grasp the true nature of this job, but they just advised me to go back and have a good sleep."
His colleagues had a good relationship with him, so instead of reporting these dangerous topics to higher departments, they urged him to rest properly.
Ulan was well aware that if his comments were known by the Counter-Intelligence Department, they would certainly subject him to endless psychological evaluations once again.
This matter would ultimately only have two outcomes.
Stop thinking and continue being a carefree happy executioner, or be diagnosed with a relapse of Cyber psychosis, and be sent back to a mental institution, prison, or be permanently silenced.
After all, in the past, there was no shortage of people who had been silenced; he wouldn’t be missed.
"You really should get a good sleep."
Melissa’s face changed color, and she advised him kindly.
The main reason the High-level Parliament bypassed the Law Enforcers department and handed these cases directly to the Anti-Terrorism Mobile Squad was to prevent anyone from investigating the recent attack’s insider information and to satisfy their inner desire for killing, which was supposed to be a perfect exchange. However, Ulan’s behavior complicated things.
"I remember you had accumulated a week’s worth of vacation. It’s a good time to take a break and change your mood."
She exercised her authority as the squad leader and decided for Ulan to take a vacation.
"Melissa, you’re a good girl," Ulan said, "But they chose you as the second team’s leader because they thought you were easy to control. You need to learn to protect yourself. Weapons without autonomous thoughts often don’t end well."
"I can take care of myself."
"Then I’m relieved."
Ulan managed a faint smile, lifted his bottle in the air to toast with Melissa from afar, and said, "Then I can enjoy my vacation with peace of mind."
"If you need it, I can introduce you to an excellent psychologist."
"Maybe another time."
No matter what, Melissa was somewhat relieved.
At least Ulan was still at the stage of complaining. Although she didn’t know what had upset him recently, he hadn’t turned those complaints into action.
Melissa never wanted to be at sword points with Ulan. She could only hope that he would adjust his mentality during this week of vacation and forget all these unnecessary thoughts.
"Didn’t you say before that you wanted to travel to The Seventeenth Region? I can sponsor your ticket."
Distancing Ulan might be a good idea. As long as he was out of The First Region, he would be unable to continue investigating the recent troublesome cases.
"Melissa, I’m not so poor that I need someone else to cover the cost of a plane ticket for me."
Ulan laughed heartily, and his tone seemed to regain some of its usual cadence.
Melissa tried hard to recall the scene when she talked with Dr. Lucy, hoping she could temporarily act the role of the psychologist, but her idea quickly failed as the sound of a door being broken in interrupted their increasingly calm conversation. When a tear gas canister rolled into the room, she instinctively switched to her thermal cutting blade and her prosthetic eyes scanned for all possible cover inside the room.
Tear gas was ineffective against them.
Cyber 2.0 military-grade prosthetic eyes, these were specifically tailored to assist them in their operations "outside."
"Don’t move, we are from the Counter-Intelligence Department."
The agents at the door felt immense pressure due to the heat of the thermal cutting blade; they hadn’t expected Melissa to be present at the target’s home at this moment.
Her level of Prosthesis Modification was as high as 79%, and she was part of the first group of soldiers fully equipped with prosthetic implantations, nearly transforming into cyborgs.
The data showed that Melissa was a specialist in close-quarters combat in confined spaces. Except for the Overload system which hadn’t been developed at the time, she had nearly all the lethal weapons for melee combat installed in her.
At this distance, it might take less than a second for her to slice the target into ribbons.
"Counter-Intelligence Department? What are you doing here?"
The reputation of this department made Melissa pause, but for safety, she still half-hid behind the cover, and the wariness in her eyes never faded.
The manner in which they showed up at the doorstep was not one of someone coming for peaceful negotiations. She noticed that the visitors all carried guns and had at least three military-grade prosthetic implants each; should war break out, regardless of the outcome, this place was bound to experience a brutal slaughter.
"Captain Melissa, this matter does not concern you. We have received a report claiming that your teammate Ulan may have a relapse of Cyber-spiritual disease, and we need to perform a psychological assessment on him. This is a reasonable and regulated procedure."
This reason left Melissa momentarily unable to retort.
Even as the captain of the counter-terrorism mobile squad, she had no standing to prevent the inspection of a subordinate suspected of relapsing into old ailments. If she rashly went to battle with the other party here, even if she eventually killed the Counter-Intelligence Department’s agents, it would be tantamount to openly declaring war on the United Government.
But she couldn’t understand why the Counter-Intelligence Department had arrived so quickly.
Only a little more than an hour had passed since Ulan spread his remarks until he returned home. Processing an arrest warrant alone would take an hour to prepare.
Unless someone had immediately reported the matter to their superiors at the time.
Melissa felt like she was about to explode in anger. She never expected someone would report Ulan behind her back, and at the same time, an indescribable restlessness surged in her heart.
Reason told her that opposing the Counter-Intelligence Department was definitely the wrong decision, especially during this sensitive time, facing a sensitive incident. Yet, when her peripheral vision caught sight of the tear gas grenade rolled into the room, the restlessness in her heart seemed to be constantly urging her to act.
In an evenly matched battle, the one who makes the first move gains the upper hand.
Even though Ulan was dead drunk, they might still be able to kill the two agents from the Counter-Intelligence Department.
Afterward...
Afterward, they would just say that the agents were too quick to barge in and had been chopped to pieces before they even had a chance to identify themselves.
It seemed like a good idea.
Melissa’s silence brought the two agents’ hearts to their throats; they knew that the person hiding behind the wall was a true killing machine, a real cyber-psycho!
Perhaps even Melissa herself couldn’t remember how many people she had killed.
"Captain Melissa, whether you want to be a Cyber lunatic or normal, it’s your own choice now."
The agent shouted into the room, and even the projectile weapon aimed forward couldn’t help but tremble slightly. However, this warning did not make Melissa submit. On the contrary, it caused a bloodthirsty gleam to flicker in her eyes.
The temperature in the room had risen a few degrees from the heat of the thermal cutting blade. The heat mixed with the chemical gases released by the tear gas, blurring their vision slightly.
Nobody knew what would happen in the next second.
"You shouldn’t have said that."
Ulan suddenly spoke up. He staggered to his feet, "You’re provoking her to attack you."
"Ulan, leave the person on the left to me. No, I can handle them both."
"Don’t be nervous, Melissa."
Just as the two agents were almost instinctively about to shoot, Ulan suddenly stopped Melissa, "It’s just some simple psychological assessment, there’s no need to make things unmanageable. I’m right, aren’t I, agents of the Counter-Intelligence Department?"
"If the psychological assessment shows you’re normal, we’ll let you come back."
"Did you hear what they said?"
Ulan gave Melissa a reassuring look, "I’ve been through countless psychological assessments, I’ll be back soon."
...
Ultimately, Ulan was still taken away by the agents of the Counter-Intelligence Department, leaving Melissa alone in the messy room. She finally put away the thermal cutting blade—she had made up her mind that if Ulan gave her a look, she would have cooperated with him to chop down the two agents.
There was a grievance in her heart that she couldn’t swallow.
More than being angry with the agents of the Counter-Intelligence Department, she was infuriated by the person who had stabbed her in the back.
She rushed back to her department at the first opportunity and convened everyone for a brief meeting; she was determined to expose the mole to assuage her anger.
The team members understood Melissa’s rage; in fact, they shared the enemy with the same zeal, and some were even more active than she was, which made Melissa wonder.
On the surface, she couldn’t tell who felt guilty; no one’s face showed the panic of being exposed. They all started the investigation with righteous indignation.
For them, finding the mole was not difficult.
They just needed to ask a colleague in charge of communications to pull all call and messaging records from that time period to find out who was responsible. To avoid any oversight, they even extended the screening to other squads.
The entire investigation took half an hour.
The shocking result was finally delivered to Melissa.
There was no betrayal of Ulan, not even from other squads who might have heard the commotion; they all kept silent. During that time, only one person from the counter-terrorism mobile squad had reported the matter to the superiors.
That was Ulan himself.
The first thing he did after returning to his apartment and getting dead drunk was to report the incident through an inside line to his superiors.
He must have known the consequences of doing so.
In other words, he voluntarily allowed himself to be taken away by the Counter-Intelligence Department’s people.
