Chapter 694: Chapter 692: Please Surrender Yourself - Part 2
Mr. Hog got thoroughly drunk in the bar’s main hall, which saved him from being found in a private booth with a gaping hole through his chest.
"He might not make it back alive from the Fisherman’s Club."
Song Lan worried about the future of his recently-made good friend.
After all, the methods of those from other races differed from his; they were vicious enough to feed innocent bystanders to plants in the sewers. He’d bet that even after working at Libra, the symbol of the United Government’s judicial power, for so long, Hog had certainly never encountered such deranged criminals.
"If he can survive this, let’s consider those things then."
"Rose said she’d keep an eye on that place. Although she’s never been inside, she knows how the club calls its gatherings."
"Tell her to be extra cautious. Being a Female Knight is a quite dangerous profession... But then again, these big families really are rich. When I went to settle the bill, I glimpsed theirs – a drink session worth 170,000 watts."
In the United Government, what does 170,000 watts mean?
With one drink session, Mr. Hog spent nearly a quarter of a Chai Ke!
Chai Ke once again made Song Lan acutely aware of the hierarchies in this world.
They had also stayed in the bar for almost an all-nighter, and the two of them had ordered just one bottle of wine, most of which ended up being drunk by Lu Xiang.
And after they had walked a certain distance away, the street finally began to liven up.
Several armored floating cars passed over their heads and halted less than a hundred meters in front of them. The doors opened, and down from them jumped Law Enforcers clad in exoskeleton armor, carrying heavy weaponry, even equipped with Shell Launchers capable of causing mass destruction.
Song Lan had heard that they had a very impressive name – the Terrorist Response Team.
Their responsibilities in the bureau were similar to those led by Captain Doug’s special operation squad, but their personnel were a bit more special; most of them were cyber-psychos who had been rehabilitated.
Of course, "rehabilitated" was the official term provided by the Law Enforcers’ department of The First Region. According to some rumors, many had witnessed their extreme cruelty during law enforcement, as they usually went in with lethal intent, hardly giving criminals any chance to surrender or plead for mercy.
And now, this squad, which would be deployed only against serious offenders, stood in their way.
The heavy weapons immediately targeted the two men.
However, unlike what the rumors suggested, they didn’t choose to fire upon landing. The elite force armored to the teeth formed a striking contrast with the two casually dressed individuals. Yet all the pressure seemed to bear down on the members of the Terrorist Response Team.
The moment they raised their weapons, their breaths became rapid and heavy.
Song Lan merely took another step forward, and the captain of the operation immediately gestured a signal to fall back. Nearly in unison, squad members scattered behind whatever cover they could find, as if they were not the ones with heavy weapons but rather the other way around.
This scene forced Song Lan to halt in his tracks. He had planned to step forward and greet them, considering they were essentially colleagues, but his colleagues now seemed to be in a notably poor mental state and apparently had no desire to exchange even a word with him.
The appearance of the Terrorist Response Team meant that he and Lu Xiang’s plan had worked.
Different from the Seventeenth Region, every street here in The First Region was under surveillance. Their casual walk was caught by the surveillance cameras almost immediately.
Just yesterday evening, the High-level Parliament passed a bill to abolish the highest department of Military Intelligence Section Seven and ordered these dangerous individuals to be closely monitored.
The two sides remained in a tense standoff on the street until the Law Enforcers’ fleet gradually arrived, blockading the entire street right away.
The negotiator who stepped forward was the captain of the Law Enforcers squad that had met him the previous night.
"...Mr. Lucky."
At that moment, she was pale as her every step seemed to be agonizing, but she had to maintain a brave front as this was their only chance to avoid casualty.
She didn’t understand why such a task would fall on the Law Enforcers.
Being sent alone to investigate the "Yaku Barrier" disappearance case meant that his abilities were above those of candidates for Six Stars recognized by the United Government, and according to the intelligence they received, the individual walking by Song Lan’s side was his colleague.
To arrest two suspects, ostensibly rescuers of the Six Stars rank, were those giving orders keen to see them dead that quickly?
"I want to know your reasons."
Luckily, Mr. Lucky maintained a calm tone for the moment, "What are we being arrested for?"
"We received a report that suspects you of being involved in plotting the assassination of the Chairperson of the Council and the Secretary-General..."
Every word was torture for the captain to speak.
These were orders from the higher-ups, with no substantial evidence provided. Wasn’t this the same as arresting people on trumped-up charges?
"Of course, I think they must be mistaken, but we still hope you would come with us."
She gritted her teeth, trying to muster as much courage as she could, "Honestly, I don’t even know why we were chosen to carry out this task."
"The reason is simple."
Song Lan glanced at the Terrorist Response Team behind the cover, "If you all were to be massacred, that would confirm I’m guilty of terrorist activities."
This way, baseless accusations would turn into hard evidence.
For those issuing orders, they didn’t expect the Law Enforcers to actually apprehend him and Lu Xiang. To them, these individuals’ deaths were the most desirable outcome.
A shiver went through the captain of the Law Enforcers.
When Song Lan spoke of their potential annihilation, his tone was undisturbed as if he was merely stating an imminent fact.
"And yet, knowing this, instead of running away, you approached us."
Song Lan said, "I’ve heard that the footage captured on the streets that night was first discovered by you, and then you submitted it to the relevant departments."
"...Yes."
"So, take a guess."
Except for the captain, everyone maintained a "safe distance" from them. He was confident that snipers were in position by now; their heads might already be in the scopes.
However, even so, everyone’s heart leaped into their throats.
"Guess what’s going to happen on this street the next time we have a time leap?"
