Chapter 690: Chapter 689: The True Assassin_1

The Chairperson of the Council did not return, and the proposal of the High-level Parliament passed smoothly, with both the Conservative Faction and the Innovator Faction seeming satisfied with the changes in the Review Meeting.

A new High-level Parliament was formed by members of three factions together, and most people in The First Region were speculating about the changes the High-level Parliament would bring, as well as the future direction of the United Government.

There were also those who were concerned about the Spiritual Energy storm that had swept across one-third of a city not long ago. Although the storm did not cause any substantial destruction, it made the councilors truly feel the threat, and the first formal meeting of the newly established High-level Parliament was initiated for this reason.

With the Conservative Faction fanning the flames, Military Intelligence Section Seven’s secrets became a hot target, with Executor Rob Lucci becoming the main suspect. There was sufficient evidence to show that he had performed similar actions in the Second Region not long ago, where a Spiritual Energy storm had destroyed the fortress of the Iris Consortium, which was still rebuilding even now.

The High-level Parliament unanimously agreed to tightly monitor this dangerous individual until the day the case was resolved.

As for when the case would be resolved and how it would ultimately be settled, that was no longer their concern. For the High-level Parliament members, the death of the Chairperson created this opportunity, and all they needed to do now was to carry out the aftermath well.

This was the charm of indefinite detention.

It also served as an opportunity for them to vent their usual dissatisfaction. The Chairperson, in the past in order to check them, had Military Intelligence Section Seven and the Counter-Intelligence Department secretly investigate them, and he had gathered quite a lot of incriminating evidence.

Everyone understood the importance of this department, and so it was even more critical to keep it firmly in their grasp.

After detaining Rob Lucci, it was now the turn of the current ministers of these two departments who were personally selected confidants by the Chairperson, and a way must be found to remove them from their positions.

The meeting continued until evening.

The councilors had a detailed discussion on how to handle the issues concerning Military Intelligence Section Seven and the Counter-Intelligence Department, and in the spirit of their first collaboration, the Conservative Faction and Innovator Faction each divided up the command authority of the Counter-Intelligence Department and Military Intelligence Section Seven. As for the matter of handling Rob Lucci, the Secretary-General came up with a brilliant idea.

Considering he was a dangerous individual, he proposed that the Six-Star rescuers, who were about to arrive in the city, jointly capture him.

Song Lan, as the subject of the High-level Parliament’s detention, listened to the entire meeting from outside the window, and shook his head at the councilors’ discussion, proving that the Chairperson knew them very well. Even the direction and final outcome of the meeting were almost the same as he had predicted.

According to the results of the meeting discussion, in a little while, the High-level Parliament would issue an ultimatum to Military Intelligence Section Seven, disbanding the highest action department, and requiring all members, including Rob Lucci, Mo Lian, Rose, and Jasmine, to surrender and submit to the investigation.

Song Lan was just passing by and overhearing this meeting; his main purpose was to retrieve a list.

The Chairperson had revealed that there was a complete list of the Six-Star rescuers stored at the Secretary-General’s office, detailing all the arrival times and the particulars of the meetings.

He demonstrated enough patience, waiting until the meeting ended, and then followed the footsteps of the Secretary-General back to the secretariat floor.

Even without the Chairperson, this department was still operating in an orderly manner.

The Secretary-General announced the High-level Parliament’s passed law to the secretariat staff, instructing them to quickly draft and seal the document so they could use it to demand people from Military Intelligence Section Seven.

After delegating the work, he returned to his office and double locked the door.

As expected, he made a phone call.

"The meeting went smoothly, everything is proceeding in the direction we envisioned."

As he spoke, the false smile on his face disappeared, turning into a cold and expressionless visage, such a sudden change in expression even Song Lan could discern.

δ had said that the secret to recognizing the Worms was to probe their emotional fluctuations.

The only surprise was that he had thought the Secretary-General was the head of all the Worms, but unexpectedly, there seemed to be someone on the same level or even higher-ranking on the other end of the call.

Meanwhile, the plants in the sewers made Song Lan realize that the Worms were seemingly just one branch spawned by a collective consciousness; apart from them, there were many other groups they had never heard of.

The phone call continued, and he could only make out that the voice on the other end was that of an older woman, emanating authority in every word.

"Yes, we have not found the Chairperson’s whereabouts so far."

The content that followed was nothing more than urging them to work hard to find the Chairperson and eliminate the potential threat once and for all.

The Secretary-General assured the person on the other end of the phone.

Song Lan politely waited until he finished his last sentence and hung up the phone before curiously asking, "Who were you talking to? Was it a consortium ruler or the Big Boss of a company?"

"How did you get in here?!"

The Secretary-General suddenly turned around but did not find anyone where the voice had come from.

He stood up anxiously and hurried towards the office door. As he took the second step, he seemed to see something pass through his body.

A spinal fracture made him go limp.

From beginning to end, he never managed to see the assailant’s face clearly. However, in the blink of an eye, he understood the identity of the uninvited guest.

"Working all day must have been hard. Now, you can rest well."

The Secretary-General saw the hand slowly withdraw from his body. Without support, he collapsed to the ground. The brain controlled by the Worms was rapidly working, but for some reason, no matter how he tried, he could not repair the damaged part of his body; the empty area seemed as if it no longer belonged to him.

Through the blur of his vision, he saw a figure rifling through documents on his desk, and the mobile phone he had used to make a call had somehow ended up in the other person’s hands.

And to this day, he couldn’t understand how the other person had managed to evade the security personnel and surveillance to appear in his office.

"Found it."

Based on the information provided by the Chairperson of the Council, he quickly identified the meeting schedule of the Six Stars’ rescuers from a stack of documents.

The Secretary-General watched helplessly as the other person approached him, unable to lift his head, only able to see that pair of legs stop beside him, followed by the lifting of a right foot moving toward his head.

In an instant, the Worm sensed danger.

It shot out of the Secretary-General’s open mouth like lightning, darting toward the gap under the sofa. The ordeal did not last long; it seemed the other person had no intention of offering any hope of escape, and darkness engulfed it in a moment.

.................

That evening, the people of the United Government received another shocking piece of news.

Just a few hours after the Chairperson died in an explosion, people found the Secretary-General’s body in the office of the Council’s Secretariat, having been attacked and killed.

The cause of death was a pierced chest.

The spine was broken, and the heart was completely destroyed, allowing one to see clearly through from one end to the other.

What truly terrified everyone was the location of the attack.

The Council was one of the most securely guarded places in the world, yet neither the surveillance nor the staff who had been just a door away from the Secretary-General at the time of the incident captured any footage of the perpetrator. They appeared out of nowhere in the Secretary-General’s office.

According to the security personnel, the Secretary-General made no sound during the attack.

The first to discover the body was a staffer who had finished drafting some documents. When she entered the room, the body on the floor already showed no signs of life, and according to the coroner’s firm conclusion, the victim had died instantly.

"Who exactly is the real assassin?"

The evening news gave her goosebumps, and she could hardly imagine how Song Lan had bypassed such stringent security. His actions contrasted starkly with that morning’s explosion, as divergent as those of a professional assassin and a street thug.

The fraudulent assassin orchestrated a major explosion, not only affecting innocent bystanders but also allowing the target to slip away right under their own watch.

Meanwhile, the real professional assassin struck a deadly blow, leaving no chance for survival.

"It seems even their ’god’ wasn’t omnipotent enough to help them foresee a deathly future."

Delta sneered at the evening news, knowing it was an inevitable outcome.

Hog Foster, who had also seen the news, lost all hope of entering the High-level Parliament after the defeat in the Seventeenth District. His most familiar friend, Richard Gervis, was now missing and burdened with the accusation of murdering his own uncle. He had spent the entire afternoon in despair, alone in the living room of his mansion, drunk.

That was until the TV, which happened to be left on, woke him up, showing him the description of the Secretary-General’s body being pierced.

That sobered him up quite a bit.

Many names flashed through his mind for a moment.

Chai Ke, Dominas, and the spy he had planted in the Seventeenth District, all died in exactly the same manner.

Killed instantly, their deaths were thorough enough to leave no information about the attackers.

After a brief hesitation, he struggled to rise from the sofa.

"Quick, get my private plane ready, I need to make a trip to The First Region!"

He urgently ordered the servants in his house.

He held some important secrets, information that his planted spy had transmitted back to the Sixth District before dying—information that might just be the key to unveiling the other party’s identity!

And with this crucial information, he could walk through the doors of the High-level Parliament.

The Secretary-General had unfortunately fallen victim to an attack.

While it was a piece of saddening news, the vacant position would surely need someone to fill it, just as the High-level Parliament would for the Chairperson of the Council.

Thinking this, he dialed a familiar number.

"I am Hog Foster," he said as soon as the call connected, "I am currently on my way to The First Region, and I have some information that might interest you."
