Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Don’t Drink and Drive_1

The following morning, the psychological counseling department received a new task.

The assignment was personally handed down by the supervisor, which clearly indicated its significance.

After the private commission from the mayor, they finally received an official task related to their expertise. Judging by Roger’s state, last night’s underground boxing match seemed to have eased a lot of his stress. Today, he was the earliest to arrive and couldn’t wait to dive into the case file first thing in the morning.

Song Lan, on the other hand, was yawning incessantly, too lazy to even watch a movie.

He had initially planned to take advantage of the early morning hours when everyone in the department was busy and had no time to consult them. This way, he could catch up on some sleep. But then their supervisor personally came to their office to convey their work tasks.

Sigh, this psychological counseling department isn’t as laid back as the logistics division after all.

"Huh? The person receiving psychological counseling is a driver involved in a collision."

After reading the case file, Roger was surprised at how close he had been to the incident.

Last night’s boxing match was intense and lasted until late into the night. After he went home, he headed straight to bed. However, he faintly heard coworkers discussing the incident when he came into work this morning.

Valerian also had a tablet and was sitting next to him, studying the content of the case file together.

"Although the driver did indeed hit someone, the victim was a criminal in the midst of committing a crime. The culprit lost consciousness immediately, and the firearm he was wielding was seized... Chief, what’s wrong?"

Just as Roger intended to include Song Lan in their discussion, he found Song Lan covering his face, looking like he was reminiscing some unbearable past.

Buddy, I owe you an apology.

Song Lan silently expressed his apologies to the unknown driver in his heart.

But the situation was urgent at the time, and this driver happened to be in the right position. He could get close to the homeless man without accidentally hitting an innocent passer-by after the time jump.

However, he never imagined that this unknown driver would need psychological counseling the next day.

"Act of righteousness."

Song Lan cleared his throat and said solemnly, "This is a typical act of righteousness. He didn’t back down in the face of an armed bandit, but bravely drove his car into him, preventing a crime from happening. I suggest we give him a small pennant and some small gifts as rewards."

"But, Chief."

Roger hesitated, took another look at the case file, and said, "After examination, the driver’s blood alcohol level was found to be as high as 120mg/100ml, indicating severe drunk driving. When the law enforcers pulled him out of the car, he was shouting, ’Watch me run you bastards over!’"

That’s why Roger thought this case was quite delicate.

Although the driver’s action of hitting the criminal objectively prevented a crime, subjectively he didn’t seem to have had the intention to act righteously. Instead, he completely mistook the armed homeless man for someone else.

According to the rules of the United Government, after acting righteously, the driver will face one and a half months of criminal detention and will have his driving license revoked.

However, for some unknown reason, Roger noticed that hearing this news made Song Lan’s complexion look even darker.

No, why on earth were you drinking so much late at night!

Have you not heard of not drinking and driving!

Song Lan felt somewhat confused by the driver’s actions, and for a moment, he didn’t know whether to feel sorry, or to be happy about catching a drunk driver.

The only good news for him was probably that the driver was completely drunk and had no idea how he had knocked the homeless man off his feet.

He probably didn’t realize the time jump at all.

"Chief, are you okay?"

Roger asked with concern.

"I’m fine, I’m fine," Song Lan said, "Just reading the case file won’t do any good, we should go meet the patient."

"I was thinking the same."

Roger nodded and said, his enthusiasm for work rose significantly. Although this time the patient was a drunk driver, their department finally received a real patient who needed their help, rather than those who pretended to be sick, who came for free food and drinks, and stared at the automatic burger vending machine during counseling.

Yet, upon meeting the driver involved in the accident, Roger’s work enthusiasm was severely dented again.

Waiting for them in the small conference room was a slightly obese middle-aged man. The moment Valerian stepped in, his lecherous eyes landed on her legs, not showing any signs of having suffered a psychological blow.

Valerian frowned; if it weren’t for the fact it would look bad doing so in the Law Enforcement Manor, she would have kicked him straight away.

When she was young, she often heard her grandfather talking about the old days. Before the United Government was established, people from different regions didn’t live in the same city. Each group of people had their own characteristics. In that faraway homeland, they were once known as the Battle Nation.

Whenever he told her about these things, her grandfather would become very animated, pouring one bottle of vodka after another into his mouth.

Valerian always remembered her grandfather’s words.

So she wasn’t the type of woman who would tremble at the sight of hooligans. Her usual approach was to use the wrestling skill taught by her grandfather to knock the other party to the ground and then kick their nose in.

"We have just received the latest news, the homeless man who was hit by you is now in stable condition and is no longer in danger. You can rest assured about this."

To prevent Valerian’s anger from rising, Song Lan started talking.

"Homeless man?"

The man was startled, then shrugged off with disdain, "Such scum in society, no one would care even if they died."

?

This statement suddenly put a question mark over Song Lan’s head.

The current situation was completely different from what he had imagined. He had thought that the driver was afraid he had killed someone and was suffering from severe psychological trauma. But judging from the situation, this man didn’t seem to care about hitting the homeless man at all.

"So, the reason for your need for psychological counseling is...?"

After being asked by Song Lan, the man finally remembered the important thing and said, "You’re the psychological counseling experts, right? I have a favor to ask. As long as you can convince my wife, name your price."

"Don’t rush, tell us slowly, what exactly happened?"

"Well, last night I went to the ’Pink Elf’ to have some fun, and got a bit drunk, and on the way home I hit a homeless man... But I told my wife that I was working overtime last night, and now that the issue is so big, I don’t know how to explain it when I go home."

"Pink Elf" is a famous pleasure venue in District Seventeen, also considered an off-limits area by Lu Xiang.

Good boy!

Turns out you’re not suffering from hitting a person, but scared of your wife finding out that you went to the pleasure venue and now you’re too afraid to go home!
