Chapter 677: Chapter 677: The Second Person_1
Yaku maintained a steady pace, he was prepared and ready to face the attack at any moment.
At this moment, the attacker had already set a trap at the end of the blood trail, but even so, as a candidate for the Six Stars, he could not easily be defeated.
About ten minutes into his walk, the stench of blood in the air grew stronger, and the structure on both sides of the sewer seemed to subtly change. At first, he thought the patterns on the walls were vines from unknown plants, but as he got closer, he discovered that the withered material was not plant branches, but rather seemed more like some kind of biological tissue.
What appeared in his sight was a passage that did not exist on the map.
At least the holographic map installed on his phone by the company did not mark this passage that led to an unknown destination.
The blood followed the staircase covered with biological tissue, leading deep into the darkness.
The space below the stairs did not seem man-made but naturally formed—a result of long-term corrosion by this unidentified substance.
The entrance to the passage was covered in bone spikes that resembled teeth.
All of this gave Yaku an absurd thought, the hallway before his eyes might be alive.
Before proceeding, he carefully photographed the entrance and reported it to the company.
Was there such an eerie place in the underground sewers of The First Region?
Yaku thought that this discovery was enough to attract the attention of the Review Meeting, and almost at the same time as the text was sent out, the company conveyed new instructions to him.
Enter.
Find out where this passage leads to.
They would report these findings to the Review Meeting, and soon, the support squad would arrive.
Then, Yaku heard a woman’s scream.
The scream came from deep within the passage, filled with helplessness and fear, and it seemed to carry immense pain.
Yaku almost instinctively used Psychic abilities to push aside the bone spikes blocking the entrance. Those seemingly sharp objects could not hinder his steps as he went down the sticky staircase into the absolute darkness, where the light from his phone became his only reliance.
He didn’t know how long he had been moving through the passage, but in the relatively open space at its end, he finally found the screaming woman with the help of the faint light.
Because of excessive blood loss, the woman’s complexion was pale. She was still wearing the uniform of a repair team, but in her current state, she couldn’t move at all. She could only watch herself slowly lapse back into unconsciousness due to blood loss until death.
Wrapped around her, binding her firmly, were entities resembling roots.
Is this...
A plant?
Yaku had never seen such a bizarre plant. While he rushed there, his mind swirled with numerous guesses about the attacker.
A reckless desperado, a Psychic, or perhaps a crazed Cyber lunatic.
But it never occurred to him that what waited for him at the end of the blood trail was not human at all, but rather some strange creature he couldn’t even name.
The only certainty was that the woman’s injuries were severe; her arms, abdomen seemed to have been slashed by sharp vents during the dragging process. If she was not immediately sent to the prosthetic hospital for treatment, the outlook would be bleak.
The earlier scream seemed to have drained all her strength, she could no longer make any sound, only staring at Yaku with eyes pleading for help.
Her body was slowly becoming deformed under the pressure of those sprouts, as the strange plant seemed to want to absorb her as nourishment into its belly in this way.
"Hold on, I’m coming to rescue you."
However, these words seemed to enrage the creature in the sewer. The black sprouts, which initially moved slowly like earthworms, suddenly found their target. They sprang from the ground like venomous snakes aiming for their prey, all at once biting towards Yaku.
Yaku didn’t waste a second more on the dense roots, he swiftly ran toward the woman about to be devoured. All the roots that lunged toward him were repelled with even greater speed the very moment they almost touched him, driving themselves into the biological mass-covered walls, leaving countless holes.
Perhaps due to pain, a beast-like shriek resonated in the sewer for a prolonged time.
The vines binding the woman slackened significantly, and Yaku swung his arms in a chopping motion.
The vines between them broke off at the sound, an invisible blade slicing them into several pieces, and the woman, losing her support, fell straight into his arms.
She seemed unable to move, and Yaku quickly glanced at the holes that were visibly self-healing. He instantly understood that this peculiar plant, like mutated creatures, possessed a strong self-healing capability. What he needed to do now was not to stay and struggle with an unknown monster. Soon, the squad sent by the Review Meeting would arrive.
Facing several Six Stars candidates, even a true Six Stars rescuer, no amount of self-healing ability would be of any use.
"Don’t get in the way. I am taking her out of here now."
Yaku carried the seriously injured woman in an almost princess-like hold, running wildly.
The plant did not respond.
It seemed to lack intelligence. After taking a hit, it didn’t choose to observe but manipulated those serpent-like roots to attack Yaku again in the same manner. Inevitably, the roots were once more repelled back, creating even more holes in the not yet fully healed walls.
The shriek grew more intense, and even the ground seemed to start shaking violently.
Yaku had to accelerate because the bone spikes growing in the tunnel were connecting, seemingly about to completely close off the route.
He felt like he was racing against time.
He was not a Prosthesis Modification type rescuer and couldn’t sprint with a life at stake like a Terminator, while his combat instincts told him that if the path ahead fully closed, he would be at a considerable disadvantage.
"Hold on tight."
He didn’t have the time to concern himself with whether the woman still had the strength to communicate and said urgently, "Wrap your hands around my waist."
The woman did as she was told.
Almost simultaneously, an invisible force pressed against Yaku’s back, propelling him forward.
His expression was grave as he did his best to maintain balance while flying through the air.
This was a not yet fully developed method of using his abilities, and in his limited experiments, each landing had been somewhat awkward.
The light at the entrance was getting closer and closer—the exit was in sight!
It seemed that actual combat had sparked his potential, for in the moment he burst through the entrance, he managed to twist his body mid-air in a move that only those with prosthetic implants or body modifications could perform. For a few seconds, he dragged the woman with one arm, while his free left hand swept through the Void, completing a downward pressing motion.
The invisible barrier would forever block the tree roots and the monsters’ shrill screams on the other side.
As he landed, dense bone spikes completely sealed the entrance to the passage, and the unidentified organic matter receded at a visible rate.
If they had been even a step later, they would have been trapped between the dense entrance and the pursuing tree roots, beset on all sides.
We did it...
We did it!
Escaping a trap with a hostage at the last possible moment was the performance of a true superhero!
Yaku felt a sense of unreality, as he had assumed that with his luck seemingly dead, he was destined to fall flat on his face, perhaps even swallowing a mouthful of sewage water.
It seems that even the Fortune-teller’s predictions can be wrong sometimes.
He remembered the scenes from those movies, looked down, and his voice softened, "Beautiful miss, are you alright?"
The woman he held in a princess carry was also looking up at him. Her hands were wrapped around Yaku’s waist, causing him a tingling sensation.
Thick blood was flowing down her wrist; the front half of her right hand was completely embedded in Yaku’s body, leaving a horrific wound on his skin.
The woman’s expression was extremely strange.
Half of her face was extreme fear, tears constantly streaming down her eyes; the other half had a grim smile.
"I’m, I’m sorry, my body is out of control."
"You were careless, Yaku."
When the woman spoke, two voices came out at the same time.
And at that moment, Yaku finally realized a detail he had overlooked.
The brief encounter had proven that the plants lacked intelligence; they couldn’t possibly come up with a plan to lure investigators to themselves through blood.
From the start, the woman herself had orchestrated the attack.
The purpose...
The purpose was to get close to him by pretending to be a victim, bypassing the defensive barrier!
The assault had been aimed at him from the very beginning!
The enemy had known the secret of his abilities all along!
Then, an even more terrifying thought emerged—why was the enemy so certain that Yaku would be the one to investigate?
Time did not stop for Yaku’s pondering. He watched as the woman’s hand, embedded in his abdomen, withdrew from his body, and blood gushed out like a breached dam.
The tingling sensation turned into excruciating pain in an instant.
The face that looked like it belonged to two people still stared at him, half sobbing and apologizing.
"Sorry, sorry, I don’t know what happened either!"
"You’ve been possessed."
Yaku’s voice was unexpectedly calm as he gently set the woman down on the ground, "There are Psychic Users in this world who can Dominate and control your body against your will."
As he spoke, he held his bleeding abdomen and slowly sat down.
"Am I... going to die?"
"No," Yaku said, "Hold on a little longer, support is on its way."
"I, I don’t want to die."
At that moment, the other voice emerged again, mocking with a hint of mockery and imitating the sound of an explosion, "Boom!"
(Didn’t have time to finish, there’s still a part left, will be added in a moment!)
