Chapter 670: Chapter 670: Warm Sunshine_1

In the following two days, the Gilvez Family stabilized the situation in The Second Region and reorganized the surviving families from the civil war. Regrettably, of the once three great families, now only they remained. Franthing, as the last survivor of the Monk Family, ultimately decided to break away from the consortium and leave the city.

Rose used these two days to complete work that had been missing for over a decade.

Personally teaching her own sister.

As far as she knew, the situation in The First Region was much more complicated than in The Second Region.

It was where the Review Meeting was located and also the epicenter of the United Government’s power. She hoped that Jasmine would be more discerning and not so easily trust others again.

At the very least, to ensure that she wouldn’t be kidnapped by human traffickers, or end up doing illicit labor for some unscrupulous business.

Lu Xiang also took advantage of these two days of leisure to enlighten Song Lan about The First Region.

"The First Region has the lowest proportion of common people among all the cities of the United Government. Most people you meet on the streets will be elites from companies or major families. It’s possible we might even run into some old friends."

"Which old friends?"

"The Foster Family. They have quite a few affairs in The First Region."

Even Lu Xiang held special feelings for this old friend, the Foster Family.

In a way, they had pushed forward her relationship with Song Lan, prompting him to embark on this path. More importantly, in the course of dealing with the Foster Family, this Dumb Bird encountered two good friends whom he remembered to this day.

Mr. Chai Ke and Mr. Dorago Safron.

Song Lan always mentioned them as if everything had happened yesterday, and as if they had never left.

And their recent circumstances added a legendary hue to these two friends.

"If Chai Ke knew that the man he pointed a gun at was the highest ranking executor from Military Intelligence Section Seven, I’m sure he would rest easy in his grave."

If we were to use the United Government’s Bounty System to calculate, that single feat alone would be enough to make Chai Ke’s bounty exceed seventy million volts, becoming a super criminal second only to several major Rebel Army leaders.

Lu Xiang playfully winked at Song Lan, "Maybe after we get to The First Region, we can help Chai Ke file for a new bounty. Six hundred thousand volts really don’t match his stature."

"Old Lu, you’ve changed."

"Hmm?"

"You’re even starting to make jokes about Mr. Chai Ke."

"I learned it from you."

For Lu Xiang, there was not a bit of psychological burden. If anyone really had to be blamed for lack of public virtue, it would definitely be Song Lan who’d be the first to be charged.

"But once we get to The Seventeenth Region, there’s a department that’s particularly troublesome—the Counter-Intelligence Department. They must be quite interested in you, a top-ranking executor who appeared out of nowhere."

Anyone familiar with the United Government structure knew that the two most troublesome departments were Military Intelligence Section Seven and the Counter-Intelligence Department. Once you got involved with them, they’d stick to you like a plaster and couldn’t be shaken off, but luckily, one of these plasters had been turned from foe to friend by Song Lan.

"Have you ever been to The First Region?"

"I’ve been there once on a training mission, but I didn’t stay for more than a few days."

That was also several years ago when they followed their instructor to escort a protectee back to The First Region. After the handover, they stayed for two days on the outskirts, where she remembered the instructor seemed drunk during the celebratory dinner. He rambled on, advising the students who participated in the escort mission to never go work in The First Region in the future.

"The instructor said it was a place that devoured people without even spitting out their bones."

In the epicenter of the United Government’s power struggles, no one was safe—from ordinary company employees and family retainers to high-ranking executives or core family members. A slight misstep could lead to their disappearance in the whirlpool of power struggles, "vanishing without a trace" kind of scenarios. "It is said that the rate of missing persons in The First Region is much more severe than in The Seventeenth Region, and often those who disappear are prominent figures."

"That’s terrifying."

"Terrifying, right? It’s all done by the Counter-Intelligence Department and us."

This "us" obviously referred to Military Intelligence Section Seven, "There are rumors that the strategic command center of Military Intelligence Section Seven is in The First Region. Even Ivan has never been there. All he knows is that once a person from Military Intelligence Section Seven ends up there by accident, they definitely cannot come out."

She had a feeling that being in the highest action department wasn’t an easy job.

Seeing Song Lan fall into negative emotions again, Lu Xiang held his hand and comforted him, "Didn’t you say it yourself? Always look on the bright side. At least we’re the ones making others disappear, not the other way around."

"Knock, knock, knock—"

The sound of knocking on the door arose.

"Mr. Lucky, Miss Mo Lian, we are ready."

Jasmine’s energetic voice came from outside the door. For her, it was a good day; she and her sister could finally free themselves from the consortium’s control and leave this city that was outwardly splendid but rotten inside.

She stood at the door holding a suitcase.

Having been accustomed to the hustle and bustle of life in the rescuer department for years, Jasmine could fit all her possessions in such a small suitcase.

Rose stood at her side, but it was apparent that she still had her guard up against Song Lan, or rather, against Military Intelligence Section Seven.

Jasmine stretched and said, "Let’s go to the airport together!"

That comment immediately made Rose scowl.

What had happened to the dignity of a Six Stars rescuer?

So all the teachings of the past two days were for nothing?

Her sister had nodded during the lessons like a bobblehead, and she had thought Jasmine had learned something. But as soon as she saw the two of them, her true nature reemerged.

Jasmine stealthily glanced at Rose and subtly moved a step closer to the couple, putting some distance between herself and her sister.

Her sister was good at everything, just too serious and too preachy.

Every time there was a chance, she would go on and on about it, and over the years, her feelings toward Rose had always been somewhat subtle, missing it when she was away but then always ending up with a headache from her nagging whenever they met. At first, she would occasionally argue back a few words, but when she realized that arguing only provoked a more fierce counterattack, she intuitively mastered the "nodding strategy."

No matter what her sister said, she would nod in agreement, and then...

In one ear and out the other, paying lip service.

After all, for most of the year, they did not see each other.

If talking about the atmosphere of conversation, she still preferred spending time with Song Lan—when she heard that Song Lan was an Executor from the highest action department, Jasmine was a bit puzzled as to why a colleague allegedly five times stronger than him wasn’t the chief, but after getting to know him, she’d discovered that Song Lan possessed a special kind of magic.

Being around him, it seemed as if one could cast aside all worries and enjoy a laid-back, pleasant time.

Clearly, she wasn’t the only one who thought this.

Right now, apart from them in the Consortium hospital corridor, there was another figure who seemed to be caught in hesitation and indecision, the Head Maid holding two suitcases, who, after a long struggle, seemed to force herself to put on a serious face and display a businesslike demeanor.

"These are farewell gifts prepared by Miss for you, to thank you for your help to the Gilvez Family. Miss is currently attending an internal family meeting and can’t come to see you off personally."

That was, of course, a lie.

But the Head Maid could understand Isabella’s feelings.

On one hand, she was grateful to Song Lan for rescuing her from Colin Capello’s hands, and on the other, she was perplexed by the destruction of the castle and the uncertain future of the Gilvez Family.

For Miss, too much had happened this month, and she had to shoulder the responsibilities of the Family head in advance.

She had once entertained the thought of leaving The Second Region, but ultimately, she decided to stay during the most difficult time for the Gilvez Family and stand by Miss’s side.

However, when she saw Song Lan again, that restless thought resurfaced.

If,

Song Lan wasn’t a secret agent from Military Intelligence Section Seven but truly a chef wandering the Neutral Country, perhaps she...

"It’s just some simple supplies."

The Head Maid averted her gaze, adding a sentence in an attempt to cover her tracks.

"Then, thank you very much."

Song Lan took the suitcases brought by the Head Maid and said, "I sincerely hope that Miss will become a leader greater than her father."

If Isabella could learn anything from what happened at the Morning Star Academy, and from this internal war and the destruction of the castle, that would be more than ideal.

Of course, these were all beautiful thoughts for this world.

Song Lan was not naive; he knew that for "aristocrats" to voluntarily give up their power and truly consider the "Common People" would probably be harder than reaching the heavens. The only thing he could be sure of was that if Isabella followed the same path as the consortium and her father, one day the same events would replay.

Eventually, "Common People" would overthrow the tyranny of the "aristocrats." History had proven this fact time and again.

"I will pass the message to Miss."

The mood of the Head Maid gradually calmed down, and her tone returned to its usual cadence. For some reason, however, a sense of emptiness filled her heart.

She forced a faint smile, "I wish you a smooth journey."

"...That’s not really what you want to say, is it?"

Jasmine noticed the Head Maid’s abnormal behavior; she was one of the few people at the Iris Consortium Jasmine didn’t dislike, and she had played a significant role during her and her sister’s upbringing.

Although the Head Maid was very good at hiding her emotions, Jasmine could keenly sense the changes in her mood.

Deliberately, Jasmine said, "This trip to The First Region, I’m afraid there might never be another chance to meet."

The statement plunged the corridor into a brief silence.

The warm morning sun beamed down on them, the Head Maid lowered her eyelids, her lashes quivering slightly.

She felt as if time was passing incredibly slowly, and internally she cursed Jasmine for being tactless at such a moment.

The Head Maid glanced at Song Lan, but as soon as she noticed his gaze on her, she quickly looked away.

"...Violet."

After what seemed like an eternity, she finally broke the suffocating silence, "That’s my name."

"Violet."

Song Lan repeated, "I’ll remember it."

He saw the Head Maid let out a sigh of relief; having said that name, she seemed to relax.

"Well then, this is goodbye."

He lifted his hand and headed toward the stairs.

The Head Maid stood still, watching as the figures of the group disappeared around the corner.

Deep breath.

She gently patted her cheeks with her hands.

Time to go back.

Don’t keep Miss waiting for too long.

She reminded herself internally.
