Chapter 67: Chapter 67: When the Assassin comes Knocking_1
Tonight, many would find it impossible to sleep soundly.
This included High Prosecutor Dominas, who, upon arriving home, received unexpected news that completely disrupted his plans.
A dead body with its neck device removed was discovered in the mayor’s security room. The solvent he entrusted with the mayor’s secretary was missing a packet, and the person set up to assassinate Roger had been sent soaring by a zooming vehicle before he could even carry out the act.
You might say that all the plans he had set for today ended in failure.
This reminded him of Phine Arnhem’s death.
He was taken equally off guard.
Dominas finally realized that something might have been wrong with the plans he had made from the very beginning. In his initial vision, he planned to control Lyon Selbot, using his authority to hold back Lu Xiang, and when the time was right, seize the entire Law Enforcers Department firmly in his hands, while clandestinely nurturing a criminal who could control the "trade line" outside the border.
In this way, district 17 could be restored to its original state.
No, to be more precise, it would become a city superior to the one before. Sooner or later, the Foster Family living in the core area would realize his true value.
However, Dominas discovered that he seemed to have made the same mistake as Angel, thinking that Lu Xiang was fighting a solitary battle.
The Foster Family had already accessed Lu Xiang’s files.
A well-known military school graduate from district 2, despite graduating at the top of her class, did not receive recognition from the powerful families or the United Government because of her overly upright personality and unrealistic ideals about the world. Including such a person in the organization might just have counterproductive effects.
History had proven on numerous occasions that unrealistic dreams were contagious and spread among people like an undetectable plague. By the time it was discovered, an epidemic had likely already occurred.
Over the past few decades, the United Government had been committed to exterminating this "plague" in its early stages.
Even though Lu Xiang’s college performance was impressive, for the United Government and powerful families, there would be similar graduates every year. Why should they risk housing such a volatile character?
As it should be.
This was one of the few topics on which Dominas and Angel could maintain the same opinion.
Reassigning Lu Xiang to work as the leader of an inconsequential department in a border town was no different from being exiled. For the rest of her life, she would likely never set foot in the core area again.
Eliminating Lu Xiang would solve a latent problem for the United Government. As long as the means were not too extreme, the United Government would likely just turn a blind eye.
However, now Dominas had to reassess the issue.
From the death of Chai Ke and Angel Foster to all the strange occurrences recently, whenever the situation was unfavorable for Lu Xiang, an invisible force seemed to be helping her escape danger, seeing her through one carefully laid trap after another.
Could such a person really be a cast-off discarded by the central area?
"Knock, knock, knock--"
The knock on the door interrupted Dominas’s train of thought.
For him, not only was it a sleepless night, but it was also one filled with an air of terror. According to the news brought by the mayor’s secretary, the abnormalities in the guard room happened around the time he left. Didn’t that mean his conversation with the mayor might have fallen into the hands of the other party?
Everything he knew might just be signals deliberately sent by the other side.
The force hiding behind Lu Xiang was just outside his door.
In his anxiety and panic, it took Dominas several minutes to shuffle to his front door like a tortoise – from the living room to the peephole.
As expected, there was no one outside the peephole.
Dominas steadied himself and finally opened the door.
On the other side, there was no imagined assassin waiting for him, only a package sealed in a file folder.
Inside the package was a tiny chip.
Without a second thought, Dominas inserted the chip into his computer.
It contained a video recorded by the Law Enforcers Department. The content was from tonight and showed a street he was not familiar with.
It was already late, yet the street was still filled with vehicles and workers who walked around like zombies after just getting off work.
The protagonist of the video was a vagrant, whose mental state was clearly abnormal.
When the vagrant took out a rifle from a trash can by the side of the street, Dominas finally understood his identity. The order to eliminate Roger was indeed one he had once issued. However, after issuing the order, he did not pay attention to the details.
But now, he had no choice but to look at all the details of what happened tonight.
The time was 23:07:31.
The vagrant in the video had finished assembling the firearm and was heading fearlessly towards a building across the street.
At the same time, a speeding car appeared next to him.
The vagrant, along with the rifle, was sent flying by the impact of the vehicle.
It was only when Dominas replayed the video that he finally discovered a detail which sent a chill down his spine.
After 23:07:31, the time at the bottom right corner of the video directly jumped to 23:07:47.
seconds had disappeared into thin air.
The passersby on the street had no idea what happened in that split second, and neither did the driver of the car. In fact, the reason Dominas rewinded the video was to see how exactly the car got so close to the vagrant.
The numbers at the bottom right corner of the video screen provided the answer to this problem.
Between 31 and 47 seconds, a full 16 seconds had disappeared, which was just enough time for a car parked dozens of meters away to appear next to the vagrant.
These missing 16 seconds also explained how the killer managed to leave the scene after Chai Ke and Angel were killed, and why Phine Arnhem, who was supposed to be invincible in district 17, mysteriously died in the street.
Fear did not dissipate with the answer, but instead grew rapidly in the silence.
Unknown Ability User.
This was the true face of the enemy.
Something suddenly crossed Dominas’s mind. He almost leapt from his computer desk, first looking at the time in the bottom right corner of his computer screen, then taking out his phone, turning on his TV, and rummaging through his living room for anything that could display the time.
All the digits he saw pointed to 1:37:17 AM.
It seemed like he had just been scaring himself.
Dominas let out a sigh of relief.
However, the next moment, the news playing on the TV saw fear skyrocket to its limit.
"That’s it for the news tonight. Thank you for watching, see you next time."
The voice of the announcer came from the TV.
1:30 AM.
That was actually the correct time for the end of the evening news in district 17.
