Chapter 653: Chapter 653: Everyone Has a Responsibility to Combat Cheating Tools_1
This was definitely the most tumultuous exhibition of martial prowess in the history of the Iris Consortium.
Just when everyone thought Cain’s defeat was inevitable, a furious roar echoed across the entire square. The roar sparked a change that repulsed his opponent several meters back. His ankle, which had long been overburdened, miraculously regained its vitality as if bathed in a rejuvenating light. Using his sword as a support, he slowly rose to his feet.
At that moment, Cain felt an unimaginable surge of power welling up inside him.
This strange new force drove his body, making him forget the numbness in his ankle and the humiliation of falling again and again. His mind and flesh seemed to become mere marionettes to this force.
It was like a classic scene from movies and television—pushed to an extreme by an unprecedented adversary, he unleashed all his latent potential.
However, to others, it was a different picture altogether.
Swirling black energy enveloped him, so potent that it was visible to everyone present.
Even his silver-white armor, a symbol of nobility and purity, was tainted by this ominous power. Dark patterns began to emerge on its surface, and a grotesque eyeball sprouted on the helm.
"That’s cheating, he should be disqualified!"
Song Lan, one of the first among the onlookers to regain his composure, indignantly raised an objection.
According to the rules of the Iris Consortium, to highlight the spirit of knighthood and their true martial prowess, the exhibitions must be fair and just, forbidding the use of Psychic Abilities, cybernetic enhancements, or performance-enhancing drugs to gain an advantage.
Yet now, Cain was blatantly violating these rules before everyone’s eyes.
He also keenly observed that the black Spiritual Energy did not belong to Cain. Something had taken over his body, turning Cain into a mere puppet.
Rob Lucci was ready to report this by name—the audacity of Cain openly cheating was unbearable.
Meanwhile, Song Lan had made a quiet resolution: if the organizers of the exhibition could not ensure fairness, he would take it upon himself, as a paragon of justice who could not stand idly by, to be prepared to intervene.
Finally, the novice instructor nearest to the exhibition stage snapped out of his shock. He immediately ascended the stage and sternly reprimanded Cain, "Stop this at once, what do you think you’re doing?"
He too was filled with doubt and surprise.
After such a long period of association, he had never known Cain to be such a powerful Psychic.
Yet using Psychic Abilities to break the rules on the stage devoted to fairness would not redeem him; it would simply brand him as a sore loser.
"Cain!"
Seeing that Cain ignored his command, the instructor’s tone grew more severe. He stepped forward, determined to physically stop his willfully disobedient disciple.
"Troublesome."
The reply was a cold whisper, accompanied by a jet of black energy erupting from Cain’s Shell Launcher embedded in his right arm.
The instructor barely had time to react before being enveloped in the black energy. The moment it touched his body, it exploded with the ferocity of a tempest, and in an instant, most of the exhibition stage was turned to rubble under the assault of the twisted energy.
Cain glanced coldly at the instructor, now part of the debris, and refocused his attention on his opponent.
"Come, let us finish this unfinished battle."
The sense of boiling blood made him completely submit to the dominion of power, aware that he had broken the rules of the exhibition and gravely injured his own master. He had gone from a glorious Knight to a sinner, but compared to what he had gained, these things seemed insignificant.
He felt the fear emanate from those who claimed to be his superiors in knighthood. All eyes were on him at the arena, and in their gaze, he felt like the only existence that mattered.
It was a feeling he had never experienced before, and now, he only wanted the soul-stirring ecstasy to continue.
The only thing he found puzzling was that Mo Lian had not fled.
She still remained in the ring, watching him calmly.
Faced with his overwhelming Spiritual Energy, she still tightly grasped her Longsword.
Knightly spirit?
Cain sneered internally, for without lifting a finger, his body, under the control of the Spiritual Energy, had already taken action.
In an instant, his figure became a streak of black light and, before anyone could get close, he hurtled towards Mo Lian.
The next moment, he heard the sound of bones shattering.
The noise wasn’t from his opponent; it was all too close, as if coming from within his own armor.
First, it was the legs, then the arms, a series of snaps traveled upwards.
When his spine emitted a sound like it was on the verge of breaking, the streak of black light abruptly stopped, and along with it, the entire armor crashed to the ground in a twisted heap.
Cain didn’t rise again.
He lay just a few meters from his adversary, his body twisted like a pretzel. He had not even had time to feel the pain before his consciousness sunk into oblivion.
"δ, you..."
From the dais, Jasmine blurted out, likely the only person at the scene who knew what had happened. As soon as the anomaly appeared on Cain, she was ready to intervene in the duel manually; however, δ was slightly faster.
Upon hearing her, the Shadow reflected on the wall finally ceased its movements.
She and Jasmine locked eyes for a moment, and δ’s fingers gradually moved away from the marionette’s neck, carelessly dropping the grotesquely twisted doll to the ground like trash.
Before this moment, Jasmine had never seen δ employ such a power.
There were no customers in this "business" deal, as she had bound Cain and a doll, devoid of all thinking capability, together. Jasmine did not doubt that if she had been a moment later, δ might have simply twisted the doll’s neck.
Could it be...
δ’s powers had evolved?
Or had she never revealed her true abilities in front of her before?
"This is the best outcome for him, and for everyone,"
δ said coldly.
She had been observing Song Lan’s actions all along. "At least a life was spared, giving him a chance to disclose the mastermind behind the scenes."
Regardless, the farce on the duel stage had subsided. The frenzied Cain had fallen into a coma, and the knights who arrived belatedly had carried away the contorted figure from the platform. With injuries of such severity, unless he replaced every bone in his body, he could never be a knight again.
No.
For Cain, the real issue he should consider upon awakening was not whether he could still become a knight, but how to face the charges of assaulting and seriously injuring a mentor.
Not only would he be stripped of his knightly status, but he would also inevitably face the Consortium’s trial.
"True to someone groomed for the Crimson Knights, you certainly learned your fair share of sneaky tricks."
Isabella remarked sarcastically, casting a meaningful glance at Colin Capello, as the dust settled from the duel.
The once haughty young master now clenched his fists tight.
Ignoring Isabella’s mockery, he glared sulkily at the maid behind him. However, the maid was not paying attention to him at all, her gaze was fixed in another direction, where Jasmine was also watching them from the high platform.
"Master Colin, the duel is over,"
she said with an undisturbed voice. "Please get ready; the banquet is about to begin."
Isabella could hardly believe her own ears.
She had clearly heard the conversation between Colin and the maid. Despite the maid’s polite language, it was unmistakably a commanding tone, something the autocratic Colin Capello would usually find intolerable.
Yet, what shocked her more was what followed.
Faced with the maid’s command, Colin backed down.
He spat out resentfully and, without uttering another word, stood up and turned to head in the direction of the banquet. With his lead, Franthing, who had been restless for the past ten minutes, finally let out a sigh of relief and rose to leave with swift steps.
Clearly, he seemed much more eager than Colin.
The heirs of the three major families had left in succession, but the knights and servants remained in the square.
Mo Lian had won the ultimate victory.
Yet, there were no cheers for her triumph; the entire square was enveloped in a deep silence, only broken by a couple of words of encouragement from her companions as she returned to the ranks of the Winter Knights.
The new recruit seemed utterly unconcerned.
Even Lu Xiang herself couldn’t comprehend what had transpired in that split second.
Cain’s body had been twisted into a knot, almost every bone in his body appeared broken, clearly the work of some psychic power, yet it didn’t seem like Song Lan’s doing.
She hadn’t expected Cain to create such an uproar in front of a public audience.
Now, the knights were starting to suspect that she had twisted Cain into such a horrific state through some unknown means at the last moment.
She sneaked a glance at Song Lan; he seemed to have demonstrated his excellent social skills once again, making a number of new friends. Servants were gathered around him, discussing something.
"Mr. Lucky, Mr. Lucky?"
The servants’ calls brought Song Lan back from his reverie to reality. "The banquet is about to start. The young lady has personally asked you to help prepare some pastries."
The elder servant noticed more details.
For a moment there, he had seen Mr. Lucky’s expression turn so somber it was almost terrifying. He wasn’t sure if it was an illusion, but even now, he felt a bit uneasy.
"Mr. Lucky, is your hand injured?"
the elder servant tentatively asked from within the crowd, noting that the other man had yet to unclench his right fist.
"Oh, I’m fine."
Song Lan relaxed his fist, flexing his hand, and his affable smile returned. "I’ve never seen such an intense duel before; they really had me worried just now."
The elder servant gave him another long look, and finally, under the influence of that comforting smile, let go of his vigilance.
He must have been mistaken earlier.
With that, he felt a touch of guilt.
How could someone as congenial as Mr. Lucky possibly do something terrible?
