Chapter 650: Chapter 650: The Murderer Turns Out to Be Myself_1
With a nervous heart, δ arrived alone on the top floor of the Consortium Hospital late at night as agreed.
Her good friend was already waiting for her on the rooftop. From a distance, she watched the devil standing at the edge of the hospital terrace, chin resting on his arm, looking down at the castle shrouded in twilight as if a demon from the upper planes was inspecting his toy.
"I’m here."
δ cleared her throat softly, signaling that she had kept the appointment.
Although meeting Song Lan always sent shivers down her spine, if she looked on the bright side, being friends with a devil could at least ensure her safety, even Jasmine’s.
Gazing down from the hospital, since the attack on the Scarlet Lord, the Consortium had once again increased its patrols. In the brief quarter of an hour, seven patrol squads had already passed by the street in front of the hospital, distinguishable from the emblems on their armor as belonging to different Knight Groups.
Hearing the voice behind him, he withdrew his gaze, "You’re just in time, I have some questions for you."
"Ask away."
"About those rumors of me – where did you all hear them from?"
The last time he posed this question was back in the Seventh District, when he had not yet met Langinus or the former headmaster of the Purple Wisteria Academy, and had no concept of the upper world in his mind; therefore, he quite naturally regarded these rumors as the doings of minions.
But now looking back, these rumors seemed not so simple.
"Someone told us."
"Who?"
Song Lan pressed on, "If I’m not mistaken, you should have been locked up in prison all this time."
Moreover, Song Lan was quite certain that he had never seen any Shadows, including δ, and even if this gap in memory was a result of time rewriting itself, δ and its kind should not retain any memories of it.
"It’s just someone; I can’t explain it clearly."
δ’s shadow flickered beside Song Lan, "They told us a lot about you."
"What else?"
"They also told me how to ascend and the way to get to the upper world. From the moment I had memories, I would often hear whispers from them."
Those whispers accompanied her through the toughest parts of her childhood and instilled in her a strong belief – she was determined to break free from this cold and cruel world, to experience the spectacle among the stars that the voices described. They assured her that all the hardships she faced in the lower world were trivial and temporary, and once she completed the ascent, her consciousness would become eternal.
"When I was locked up in prison, I discussed this with others; among them, some had heard the whispers too, but some had not."
"Why not?"
"Because one day, all of a sudden, the whispers vanished."
δ’s tone changed, glaring at Song Lan as if reproaching him for feigning ignorance, "Someone killed them, but on the day all the whispers ceased, they sent us a message."
"What message?"
As δ recounted, a sinister premonition suddenly flashed through Song Lan’s mind, simultaneously confirming his suspicions.
"The killer is you, and you are an absolute devil."
δ felt that perhaps only this word could describe Song Lan because, for Psychic Ability Users, those whispers guided them forward like deities.
Only a being of the same caliber as the deities, not a human, could kill them.
"They also warned all of us not to ascend, that the upper world is already ruled by devils, and all who reach there by ascending have only death awaiting them."
This was the final warning from the "Father God"; as their consciousness burnt out, they permanently closed the pathways to the upper world.
It seemed they believed that in this way, they could banish the devil to the upper world forever.
But they miscalculated once more.
When the devil broke into the prison, destroyed the devices that contained them, and erased the Prison Warden who guarded them, all those who had once heard the whispers felt a profoundly familiar sensation, as if the deity had returned to their midst once again.
But then, everyone realized a terrifying truth.
The upper world had already been destroyed, all the deities had fallen into eternal cold and silence, and the only being that could descend to this world was the devil the whispers mentioned last.
Everyone chose to scatter and flee.
Even those of their kind who had never heard the whispers understood the cruelty and terror of the devil profoundly through the experiences of others.
And now, for some reason, this devil was engaging her in a detective game.
An unknown race had infiltrated human society.
They had very likely replaced some key figures in the United Government.
This was the information δ had learned from Jasmine, and she hoped she could coordinate with her to root out these worms one by one.
For humans, this might be considered a great threat, but for a devil from the upper world, he did not need to find the worms. He only needed to turn the entire Second District into dust, just as he had dealt with the Sea-Land Energy Company and the Morger Family, and the lurking worms would perish along with it.
And δ was convinced that with the devil’s brutality, he would certainly do so, even considering the entire process as a form of entertainment.
"Alright, let’s assume what you’re saying is true,"
After a prolonged silence, Song Lan finally managed to force out a sentence.
The δ’s tone, emotions, and intricacies painted a flawless picture, signaling that things were developing in the worst direction he had anticipated.
He might indeed be carrying the burden of serial killings.
The victims were likely numerous consciousness entities from the upper world.
It was even possible that the pathways to the upper world being sealed, the increasing rarity of psychics, and the inability of people to systematically develop a method dedicated to the cultivation of psychics were all related to him.
"Let’s set aside the issue of my identity for now, I asked for your help in finding these worms for a reason."
"Alright, tell me."
The δ adopted a posture that screamed "Even if you’re lying, I’ll believe you." In this inherently unequal conversation, she had neither the choice nor the right to resist.
Otherwise, it too would vanish without a trace like those whispers.
"I suspect that there’s more than one path to ascension in this world, and other consciousness entities exist in other upper worlds."
Although δ’s words implicated that his true identity might indeed be that of a serial killer, they also helped Song Lan clear his thoughts. These worms, devourers, and possibly other races they had yet to discover, might be, like δ, on their paths to ascension.
"I understand."
Just from a single sentence, δ had an epiphany, "You plan to kill all other upper world consciousness entities."
Song Lan, for a moment, truly had no rebuttal.
Back in the Third Neutral Country, he had issued an invitation to the consciousness amalgamation that said, "If you disagree, come and cut me down." If they ever met one day, it was doubtful that the outcome would be peaceful.
He had disrupted the last ascension ceremony, definitively creating enmity between them.
Still, Song Lan tried to think positively, "It’s not as serious as you imagine, I just want to see if I can make more friends."
"I believe you."
The contrast between δ’s words and its posture was stark, "Tell me, what do you need me to do?"
"The last call that Ferren Molege made was to this castle. His superior must be disguised as an executive of some consortium. I hope you can help me find him, like you did last time."
"Jasmine thinks the same."
δ said, "But this worm is much harder to find than Ferren Molege, or maybe it hasn’t shown itself yet."
"There will be a knighting ceremony early tomorrow morning inside the consortium, where most of the important members will be present. It’s an opportunity."
"Okay."
δ decisively agreed to Song Lan’s request.
Over the past ten or so minutes, it had been carefully observing the changes in Song Lan’s expression. Thanks to its abilities, it could sense the subtle shifts in a creature’s mood with precision, but after several encounters, it found Song Lan’s emotional fluctuations somewhat unexpected.
At least, they didn’t seem consistent with a devil’s emotional swings.
"You should get some rest early then, don’t oversleep tomorrow."
Song Lan spoke.
"I don’t need rest."
δ didn’t leave immediately; it appeared to be wrestling with fierce internal conflict. Although she hadn’t discovered the consortium executive replaced by a worm, she had a premonition from several family executives about what was to unfold next.
After hesitating for a moment, she finally spoke, "Within three days, there will be a civil war in this castle."
"I can imagine that."
"Jasmine mentioned that if Capello and the Monk Family intend to provoke a civil war, they will inevitably have to confront her sister, Rose. That’s the reason they haven’t dared to act rashly; she’s curious why Capello and the Monk Family suddenly feel confident."
δ was not interested in the consortium’s civil war, and the following statement hadn’t been shared with Jasmine either.
"Among us, there are some zealous followers who once treated Whisper as ’Father God’."
δ paused for a moment.
For it, this was a difficult decision.
Because once these words were spoken, there would be no turning back.
Those "cellmates" who had once been imprisoned with it, could potentially become its enemies in the days ahead.
But now, a choice had to be made.
Because the devil before it seemed interested, waiting for its next words.
"They hate you and may seek revenge for your actions."
δ made a choice, "And one of them is now in the Second District."
